Stair Power Race
Students understand that the work done lifting a load equals weight × height and does not depend on climbing speed, that carrying a load horizontally does zero work, and that doing the same work in less time means greater power (work ÷ time).

Predict (before you touch anything)
Kasei climbs slowly (0.5 m/s) and Niko climbs fast (1.0 m/s), both carrying the same 80 N load. When they reach the 2nd floor, who do you think has done more work?💡 仕事は「力の大きさ」と「力の向きに動いた距離」で決まります。 Work depends on the size of the force and the distance moved in the direction of the force. Which of these is different for the two students?
While walking along the level hallway carrying the load, do you think the holding force is doing work?💡 荷物を支える力の向きと、歩いて進む向きを比べてみましょう。Compare the direction of the force holding up the load with the direction you are walking.
Try it
Watch the race with the starting settings (Load weight 80.0 N, Kasei speed 0.5 m/s, Niko speed 1.0 m/s). Press "Pause" to stop and "Start" to continue. While they walk along the "1st floor hallway (level)", watch the "Work" values and the graph.
While they climb the stairs, look at the red upward arrow (lifting force) and the green arrow (motion), and watch the "Work" meters at the top increase.
When both have finished, read "Finish time", "Time on the stairs", "Work (weight × height)" and "Power (work ÷ stair time)" in the results table, and compare the slopes of the two lines in the graph on the right.
Change "Load weight" to 150 N (the race restarts), watch until both finish again, and record how the work and power change.
Check
While the two walked along the hallway, how much work had they done? What did the graph look like?→ 2人とも 0.0 J のままで、グラフは 0 J の水平な線だった。 Both stayed at 0.0 J, and the graph was a flat line at 0 J. The holding force (upward) is at right angles to the motion (horizontal), so no work is done.
With an 80 N load, how much work had each student done at the finish?→ どちらも 320.0 J(80 N × 4.0 m)で同じ。 Both did 320.0 J (80 N × 4.0 m), the same. Even with different speeds, the work is weight × height.
What was each student's power? How did it compare with the slope of each line in the graph?→ かせいは階段に 11.3 s かかり 320 ÷ 11.3 ≈ 28.3 J/s、にこは 5.7 s で ≈ 56.6 J/s。 Kasei took 11.3 s on the stairs, so 320 ÷ 11.3 ≈ 28.3 J/s; Niko took 5.7 s, so ≈ 56.6 J/s. The slopes in the graph matched (28.3 J/s and 56.6 J/s), and the line for faster Niko was steeper.
When the load weight was 150 N, how did the work and power change?→ 仕事は2人とも 600.0 J(150 N × 4.0 m)に増え、仕事率はかせい約 53.0 J/s、にこ約 106.1 J/s になった。 Work rose to 600.0 J for both (150 N × 4.0 m), and power became about 53.0 J/s for Kasei and about 106.1 J/s for Niko. The finish times did not change, and both work and power increased in proportion to the weight.
Think further
If the same load is raised to the same height by an elevator instead of the stairs, does the work change? Because the weight and height are the same, the work (weight × height) does not change. If the time taken is different, the power changes; the shorter the time, the greater the power.
Common misconceptions
The faster climber does more work (in fact the work is the same; what is larger for the faster climber is the power).
Carrying a heavy load counts as doing work even when walking horizontally (in fact no work is done because there is no movement in the direction of the force).

The model assumes the load is lifted at constant speed, so the lifting force equals the load's weight, and it does not include the work of lifting the students' own bodies. The speed sliders set the speed along the path, and power is calculated as work ÷ time on the stairs (the hallway time is not included). Moving any slider restarts the race.
