Pushing and Pulling a Cart: Combining Forces

Pushing and Pulling a Cart: Combining Forces 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that a pull at an angle can be resolved into horizontal and vertical components, that only F1 + F2cosθ moves the cart forward, and that the cart starts to accelerate uniformly only when this net force exceeds the maximum friction of 60 N.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you keep the pull F2 the same but raise the rope angle θ from 0° to 45°, do you think its effect in moving the cart forward will become larger, smaller, or stay the same?💡 斜めの力を「水平方向」と「垂直方向」の2つの力に分けて考えてみましょう。 Try splitting the slanted force into a horizontal part and a vertical part. Which part pushes the cart forward?
When people are pushing and pulling the cart but it does not move, what do you think is happening to the forces on the cart?💡 地面と車輪の間にはたらく力にも目を向けましょう。Think about the force that acts between the ground and the cart as well.

Try it

In the starting state (F1 push 40 N, F2 pull 50 N, Rope angle θ 30°), compare the vector diagram at the top with the cart below. Find where F2 is split by dashed lines into a horizontal and a vertical part (the purple "↑F2sinθ" arrow), and read the value of "Net force = F1 + F2cosθ".
Set "F1 push" to 20 N and "F2 pull" to 50 N, then move "Rope angle θ" from 0° to 45°. Record how the "Net force" value in the display and the length of the green net-force arrow change.
Keeping θ = 45°, press "▶ Start". Check whether the cart moves, and compare the lengths of the orange friction arrow and the net-force arrow.
Press "Reset", set F1 = 40 N, F2 = 50 N, θ = 30°, and press "▶ Start". Read "Time", "Velocity" and "Acceleration" in the display every second, and watch the spacing of the yellow dots on the road (the cart's position every 0.5 s).

Check

With F1 = 20 N and F2 = 50 N, what was the net force at θ = 0° and at θ = 45°? Did the cart move?→ θ = 0° では 20 + 50 = 70.0 N で 60 N を超えるので動き出す。 At θ = 0° it is 20 + 50 = 70.0 N, which is more than 60 N, so the cart moves. At θ = 45° it is 20 + 50 × cos45° ≈ 55.4 N, which is 60 N or less, so the cart does not move.
When the cart did not move, how did the friction arrow compare with the net-force arrow in length and direction?→ 摩擦は合力と同じ大きさ(例: 55.4 N)で逆向き(左向き)に描かれ、2つの力がつり合っているので台車は静止したままになる。Friction was drawn with the same size as the net force (for example 55.4 N) but pointing the opposite way (to the left). The two forces balance, so the cart stays at rest.
When you ran the cart with F1 = 40 N, F2 = 50 N and θ = 30°, what happened to the acceleration and velocity?→ 合力は 83.3 N で、加速度は (83.3 − 60) ÷ 10 = 2.33 m/s² のまま一定。 The net force was 83.3 N and the acceleration stayed constant at (83.3 − 60) ÷ 10 = 2.33 m/s². The velocity rose at a steady rate, about 2.3 m/s after 1 s and about 4.7 m/s after 2 s, and the gaps between the yellow dots grew wider.
Was the purple "↑F2sinθ" arrow included in the net force? Did the cart lift off the ground?→ 入っていない。 No. The net force is F1 + F2cosθ; the vertical component (25.0 N at θ = 30°) is shown only as a separate upward arrow. It is smaller than the cart's weight of about 98 N, so the cart does not lift off.

Think further

Why is it hard to get the cart moving when θ is large, even if F2 is made stronger?→ 前に進めるのは水平成分 F2cosθ だけで、θ が大きいほど cosθ が小さくなり、F2 の多くが前進に役立たない上向きの成分 F2sinθ になるから。 Only the horizontal component F2cosθ moves the cart forward. The larger θ is, the smaller cosθ becomes, so more of F2 turns into the upward component F2sinθ, which does not help forward motion. The cart cannot start until F1 + F2cosθ exceeds 60 N.
After the cart is moving, what would happen to its motion if the forces were reduced so that the net force is exactly 60 N?→ 前向きの合力と動摩擦 60 N がつり合い、台車にはたらく力の合計が 0 になるので、加速度は 0 になり、その時点の速さのまま等速直線運動を続ける(慣性の法則)。The forward net force and the 60 N kinetic friction would balance, so the total force on the cart would be zero. The acceleration becomes 0 and the cart keeps moving in a straight line at its current speed (law of inertia).

For simplicity, this model sets both maximum static friction and kinetic friction to 60 N; it ignores the real effect that the upward component F2sinθ reduces the normal force and therefore the friction. At exactly 60 N the cart does not start; above 60 N it accelerates with a = (net force − 60) ÷ 10. All arrows share one scale (the 50 N bar at the top right), so students can compare arrow lengths with a ruler.
