Lever and the Principle of Work
Students understand that with a lever, pushing farther from the pivot lets you lift the load with less force, but you must push a correspondingly longer distance, so the work you do (F₁×s₁) always equals the work done on the load (W₂×s₂) (the principle of work).

Predict (before you touch anything)
A lever has the load 60 cm from the pivot. You push at a point 120 cm from the pivot to lift a 60 N load. About how many newtons of force do you think you need?💡 押す点は、おもりと比べて支点から何倍遠いでしょうか。How many times farther from the pivot is the push point than the load?
When you can push with less force, do you think the distance your hand pushes down is the same as the distance the load rises?💡 てこは曲がらない1本の棒で、支点のまわりを回転することに注目しましょう。Notice that the lever is one stiff bar turning about the pivot.
Try it
In the starting state (L₁ "Push-point distance" 120 cm, W₂ "Weight of load" 60 N, s₁ "Push-down distance" 30 cm), press "▶ Run", watch the lever turn, and read "F₁ least force" and "s₂ load rises" in the table and θ in the picture.
Compare the lengths and values of the two bars in "Work compared" below ("Work by you F₁×s₁" and "Work on load W₂×s₂").
Set L₁ to 60 cm and then to 30 cm, pressing "▶ Run" each time, and record how F₁, s₂ and the two works change.
Return L₁ to 120 cm, set W₂ to 120 N and s₁ to 60 cm, press "▶ Run", and check whether the two bars still match. Finally press "Reset" to return to the starting values.
Check
In the starting state (L₁ = 120 cm), what were F₁ and s₂?→ F₁ = 30.0 N F₁ = 30.0 N, half of the 60 N load, and s₂ = 15.0 cm, half of the 30 cm the hand pushed down. Both ends turned through the same angle, θ = 14.3°.
How did "Work by you" and "Work on load" compare?→ どちらも 9.00 J で、2本の棒は同じ長さだった(30 N × 0.30 m = 60 N × 0.15 m)。Both were 9.00 J and the two bars had the same length (30 N × 0.30 m = 60 N × 0.15 m).
When L₁ was 60 cm and then 30 cm, how did F₁ and s₂ change?→ L₁ = 60 cm At L₁ = 60 cm, F₁ = 60.0 N (same as the load) and s₂ = 30.0 cm (same as the push distance), and both works were 18.00 J. At L₁ = 30 cm, F₁ = 120.0 N, twice the load, and the load rose s₂ = 60.0 cm, twice the push distance; both works were 36.00 J. In every case the two works were equal.
With W₂ = 120 N, s₁ = 60 cm and L₁ = 120 cm, what were the two works?→ F₁ = 60.0 N、s₂ = 30.0 cm F₁ = 60.0 N and s₂ = 30.0 cm, and both works were 36.00 J, so the two bars were the same length.
Think further
Why does pushing at a point far from the pivot make the push distance longer than the distance the load rises?→ てこは1本の固い棒なので、両端は支点のまわりを同じ角度だけ回る。 The lever is one stiff bar, so both ends turn about the pivot by the same angle. For the same angle, a point farther from the pivot moves along a bigger circle and travels farther (s₁/L₁ = s₂/L₂). If L₁ is twice L₂, s₁ is also twice s₂.
Why doesn't using a lever reduce the amount of work? Explain with an everyday tool such as a claw hammer or a bottle opener.→ てこで力が 1/n になると、押す距離は n 倍になるので、力×距離の積は変わらない。 If a lever makes the force 1/n as large, the push distance becomes n times as long, so force × distance does not change. A claw hammer pulls a nail a short distance with a large force while you move the end of the handle a long way. Tools can reduce the force or change its direction, but they cannot reduce the work itself.
Common misconceptions
A lever lets you use less force, so you also do less work." The push distance grows by the same factor the force shrinks, so the work is the same.
Both ends of a lever move the same distance." Both ends turn through the same angle, but the distance each moves is proportional to its distance from the pivot.

The lever's weight and friction at the pivot are ignored, and F₁ is the least force needed to balance the load (F₁ = (L₂/L₁)×W₂). s₁ and s₂ are shown as the arc lengths moved by the ends of the bar (s = L×θ), and when θ is large (e.g. L₁ = 30 cm) a note says the drawing is schematic. Measuring vertical distances instead gives the same ratio L₁:L₂, so the conclusion that the works are equal does not change.
