Where Do Clouds Form over Mountains?

中2 · 地学単元: 雲のでき方(断熱膨張と露点)Where Do Clouds Form over Mountains? 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that air rising up a mountain slope expands and cools, that clouds form from the height where it reaches its dew point (the cloud base), that once clouds form the air cools more slowly, and that air that has dropped rain and crossed the mountain becomes hotter and drier on the lee side (the foehn effect).

Predict (before you touch anything)

On a day when the air near the ground is humid (high humidity) and on a day when it is dry (low humidity), on which day do you think the base of the cloud on the mountain slope (where clouds start to form) will be lower?💡 雲ができるのは、上昇して冷えた空気の温度が露点まで下がったときです。 Clouds form when the rising, cooling air drops to its dew point. On which day is the gap between air temperature and dew point at the ground larger?
When air that dropped rain on the windward side crosses the mountain and comes down to the foot on the lee side, do you think its temperature will be higher, lower, or the same as at the windward foot?💡 雲ができる前とできたあとで、100 m 上がるごとの温度の下がり方が同じかどうかに注目しましょう。Pay attention to whether the temperature drops by the same amount per 100 m before and after the cloud forms.

In the starting state ("① Ground temperature" 25 ℃, "② Relative humidity" 60 %, "③ Mountain height" 2000 m), watch the air parcel climb the slope, and observe the "Air parcel: altitude, temp, dew point, RH" readout at the bottom and how it changes when the parcel passes the dashed cloud base (LCL) line. You may press "Pause" to read the numbers.
On the altitude-temperature graph on the right, find the white circle (LCL) where the red dry adiabatic line meets the blue dotted dew-point line, and check the slope of the orange moist adiabatic line above it.
Compare the temperature, dew point and RH in the "Windward plain" box (top left) and the "Leeward plain" box (top right).
Set "② Relative humidity" to 90 %, then to 30 %, and watch how the cloud base (LCL) value, the cloud and rain, and the leeward plain temperature change.
Return "② Relative humidity" to 60 %, set "③ Mountain height" to 1000 m and then 4000 m, and compare whether a cloud forms and the leeward plain's temperature and RH.

Check

In the starting state, at what height (LCL) did the cloud start to form? What were the parcel's temperature and dew point there?→ 凝結高度は約 1039 m。 The cloud base was about 1039 m. The temperature, 25.0 ℃ at the ground, fell to about 14.6 ℃ and became equal to the dew point (16.7 ℃ at the ground), so RH reached 100 %. Above that the readout showed "saturated: cloud forms" and the dew point stayed equal to the temperature.
How did the temperature drop per 100 m differ before and after the cloud formed?→ 雲ができる前は 100 m あたり 1 ℃(乾燥断熱)、雲ができたあとは 100 m あたり約 0.5 ℃(湿潤断熱)とゆるやかになった。 Before the cloud it dropped 1 ℃ per 100 m (dry adiabatic); after the cloud formed it dropped only about 0.5 ℃ per 100 m (moist adiabatic). On the graph the orange line is steeper than the red one (temperature changes less with height).
How did the temperature and RH differ between the windward and leeward plains?→ 最初の状態では、風上が 25.0 ℃・湿度 60 % だったのに対し、風下は 29.8 ℃・湿度 38 % と、高温で乾燥していた(フェーン現象)。 In the starting state, the windward plain was 25.0 ℃ and 60 % RH while the leeward plain was 29.8 ℃ and 38 % RH, hotter and drier (the foehn effect). With a 4000 m mountain the leeward plain reached 39.8 ℃ and 15 % RH.
How did cloud formation change when you changed the relative humidity or the mountain height?→ 湿度 90 % では凝結高度が約 220 m と低くなり、斜面の低いところから雲と雨ができた。 At 90 % RH the cloud base dropped to about 220 m, and cloud and rain formed low on the slope. At 30 % RH the cloud base was about 2349 m, higher than the 2000 m summit, so "no cloud forms" appeared and the leeward plain was 25.0 ℃ and 30 %, the same as the windward side. At 60 % RH, a 1000 m mountain did not reach the cloud base (1039 m), so no cloud formed.

Think further

Why does the air cool more slowly once a cloud forms?→ 水蒸気が凝結して水滴になるときに熱(潜熱)を出し、その熱が空気をあたためるので、膨張による冷え方の一部が打ち消されるから。When water vapor condenses into droplets it releases heat (latent heat), which warms the air and partly offsets the cooling from expansion.
Why does the lee side become hotter than the windward side in the foehn effect? Explain it together with why the temperature did not change when no cloud formed.→ 風上では雲ができてから 100 m あたり 0.5 ℃ しか冷えないが、雨で水分を落とした空気は風下で下降するとき 100 m あたり 1 ℃ ずつあたたまる。 On the windward side, once the cloud forms the air cools only 0.5 ℃ per 100 m, but when the air, having lost water as rain, sinks on the lee side it warms 1 ℃ per 100 m. It gains more heat than it lost, so it is hotter at the foot than on the windward side, and since water vapor was lost as rain its humidity is also lower. With no cloud, both rising and sinking are 1 ℃/100 m, so the temperature returns to the original value.

The model uses a fixed moist adiabatic lapse rate of 0.5 ℃/100 m and a dew-point drop of 0.2 ℃/100 m for rising air (close to real values but simplified), and assumes all condensed water falls as rain on the windward side. As a result the cloud base is about (temperature − dew point) × 125 m. If your textbook treats the dew point as not changing with height, point out this difference. "Moist adiabatic" is beyond the 8th-grade course, so you may simply say "once clouds form, the air cools more slowly".
