Vertical Throw and Conservation of Mechanical Energy
Students understand that for a ball thrown straight up, kinetic and potential energy change into each other while their sum (mechanical energy) stays constant, and that the maximum height depends on the initial speed and gravity but not on the mass.

Predict (before you touch anything)
A 1 kg ball and a 2 kg ball are thrown straight up at the same speed. Which one do you think goes higher?💡 重いボールは位置エネルギーも運動エネルギーも大きくなります。 A heavier ball has more potential energy and more kinetic energy. Think about what happens when both grow by the same factor.
If you throw the ball twice as fast, how many times higher do you think it will go?💡 運動エネルギーは速さの何乗に比例するかを思い出しましょう。Recall what power of speed kinetic energy is proportional to.
Try it
With "Initial speed v0" 10.0 m/s, "Mass m" 1.0 kg and "Earth 9.8", press "Throw", press "Pause" partway up, and read v and h next to the ball and the energy bar on the right (Potential, Kinetic, Total 50.0 J). Press "Resume" to continue.
Watch the energy bar when the ball reaches the top ("Top (v=0)") and when it lands, and compare the speeds recorded at each tick height on the way up (blue dots) and on the way down (green dots).
Move the "Mass m" slider to 2.0 kg and see how the "Max height" value and the energy "Total" value each change.
Set "Initial speed v0" to 5.0 m/s, then drag it up to 10.0 m/s in one move, and look at the message at the top "(…× before)" and the gray dotted "Before" line.
Press the "Moon 1.6" button (then try "Mars 3.7"), and check the maximum height and the ratio shown in the message at the top.
Check
At the top, what were the ball's speed and the energy bar like?→ 速さは v = 0.0 m/s になり、エネルギー帯はすべて位置エネルギー(PE 50.0 J、KE 0.0 J)になった。 The speed became v = 0.0 m/s and the whole bar was potential energy (PE 50.0 J, KE 0.0 J). At landing it was the reverse, KE 50.0 J and PE 0.0 J, and at every moment the bar exactly filled the dashed frame (50.0 J).
When the ball passed the same height, how did its speed going up compare with coming down?→ 同じだった。 They were the same. At v0 = 10.0 m/s, the blue and green dots showed the same values: 8.7 m/s at about 1.3 m, 7.1 m/s at about 2.6 m, and 5.0 m/s at about 3.8 m.
When the mass changed from 1.0 kg to 2.0 kg, what happened to the maximum height and the total energy?→ 最高点は 5.10 m のまま変わらなかった(「質量に無関係」の表示)。 The maximum height stayed at 5.10 m ("same for any mass"). The total energy doubled from 50.0 J to 100.0 J.
How many times higher did the ball go when the initial speed went from 5.0 to 10.0 m/s, and when gravity changed from Earth 9.8 to Moon 1.6?→ 初速2倍では 1.28 m → 5.10 m で約4倍(4.00倍)。 Doubling the initial speed took it from 1.28 m to 5.10 m, about 4 times (4.00×). On the Moon it went from 5.10 m to 31.25 m, about 6 times (6.13×).
Think further
Why does changing the mass not change the maximum height?→ 質量が2倍になると、投げたときの運動エネルギーも2倍になるが、同じ高さまで上げるのに必要な位置エネルギー(mgh)も2倍になる。 Doubling the mass doubles the kinetic energy at launch, but it also doubles the potential energy (mgh) needed to reach any height. Both change by the same factor, so the height reached is unchanged (m cancels in h = v0²/2g).
Why does doubling the initial speed make the height 4 times, not 2 times, greater?→ 運動エネルギー ½mv² は速さの2乗に比例するので、速さ2倍でエネルギーは4倍になる。 Kinetic energy ½mv² is proportional to the square of the speed, so doubling the speed gives 4 times the energy. All of it turns into potential energy mgh, so the height is also 4 times greater.
Common misconceptions
A heavier ball thrown at the same speed goes higher (or lower)." Without air resistance the maximum height does not depend on mass.
At the top the ball has no energy." At the top the kinetic energy is 0, but all of it has become potential energy, and the total is unchanged.

The model ignores air resistance, and the ball's drawn size changes with mass only for display. The ball pauses about 0.6 s at the top so v = 0 can be read, rests about 1.2 s after landing, and then is thrown again automatically. Since h = v0²/2g is beyond the lower-secondary curriculum, have students confirm "2× speed gives 4× height" and "about 6× on the Moon" with the numbers, and explain why using the energy bar.
