Energy Conservation on a Slide

中3 · 物理単元: 力学的エネルギーの保存(振り子・斜面)Energy Conservation on a Slide 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that on a frictionless slope the sum of potential and kinetic energy (mechanical energy) is conserved, so an object sliding from the same height reaches the same speed at the bottom whatever the angle, and that the angle changes only the time it takes.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Balls slide down three frictionless slides at 15°, 30° and 60°, all from the same height of 1.0 m, starting at the same time. Which one do you think is fastest at the bottom? Which one do you think reaches the bottom first?💡 「速さ」と「着くまでの時間」は別の問題です。 Speed" and "time to arrive" are two different questions. Think about whether the amount of potential energy lost on the way down differs among the three slides.
If the slide has friction, where do you think the energy the ball loses goes?💡 滑り台で手やおしりをこすったときの感覚を思い出してみましょう。Recall what you feel when you rub your hands or slide down a playground slide.

Try it

Set the display mode to "3 slopes", "Angle θ ★" to 30°, "Height h" to 1.0 m and "Friction μ" to 0.00, press "Reset" then "Run", and record v and t at the bottom for the 15°, 30° and 60° slopes.
Press "Reset" then "Run" again, press "Pause" partway down, and compare the stacked energy bars (Potential U, Kinetic K) and the "Total" value for the three slopes.
Set "Height h" to 2.0 m, press "Run", and check how the speed at the bottom and the "Total" energy change.
Return "Height h" to 1.0 m, set "Friction μ" to 0.10 and then 0.30, press "Run" each time, and observe the orange "Heat" shown on the slopes, the "Heat" part of the bars, and the speed at the bottom.
Keeping μ = 0.30, tick "Push off at v₀=1.0 m/s", press "Run", and watch the ball on the 15° slope.

Check

With no friction and h = 1.0 m, what were the speeds and times at the bottom on the three slopes?→ 速さは3本とも v = 4.43 m/s で同じ(√(2gh) と一致)。 The speed was the same on all three, v = 4.43 m/s (equal to √(2gh)). The times were about 0.52 s at 60°, 0.90 s at 30° and 1.75 s at 15°, so the steeper the slope, the shorter the time.
While sliding without friction, what happened to the height of the stacked bars and the "Total" value?→ 緑の位置 U が減ったぶんだけ青の運動 K が増え、棒全体の高さは変わらず「合計」は 9.80 J のまま一定だった。 The green Potential U went down by exactly as much as the blue Kinetic K went up, so the bar's total height did not change and "Total" stayed at 9.80 J. At the bottom, U = 0 and K = 9.80 J.
When h was set to 2.0 m, what happened to the speed at the bottom and the total energy?→ 合計は 19.60 J と2倍になり、到達速さは 3本とも 6.26 m/s になった。 The total doubled to 19.60 J and the speed at the bottom became 6.26 m/s on all three slopes. Doubling the height does not double the speed; it multiplies it by about 1.4 (√2).
What changed when the friction coefficient was μ = 0.10 and μ = 0.30?→ μ = 0.10 では「熱」が 15° で 3.66 J、30° で 1.70 J、60° で 0.57 J 発生し、到達速さは 3.51・4.03・4.30 m/s と 4.43 m/s より小さくなった(合計 9.80 J は変わらない)。 At μ = 0.10, "Heat" of 3.66 J (15°), 1.70 J (30°) and 0.57 J (60°) appeared, and the bottom speeds dropped to 3.51, 4.03 and 4.30 m/s, all below 4.43 m/s (the Total stayed 9.80 J). At μ = 0.30 the 15° ball did not start moving ("At rest μ≥tanθ"). When pushed off at 1.0 m/s, the 15° ball stopped partway down ("Stopped").

Think further

Why is the speed at the bottom the same even though the steeper slope gets there sooner?→ 下での運動エネルギーは、減った位置エネルギー mgh で決まり、h が同じなら斜面の形によらず同じだから(½mv² = mgh より v = √(2gh))。 The kinetic energy at the bottom is set by the potential energy lost, mgh, which is the same for the same h no matter the slope's shape (½mv² = mgh gives v = √(2gh)). A steeper slope has a larger acceleration along it, g·sinθ, and is shorter, so the time is shorter, but the energy gained is the same.
With friction, why did the shallower slope produce more "Heat"?→ 熱になるのは摩擦力がした仕事(摩擦力 μmg·cosθ × 滑った距離)で、角度が小さいと摩擦力がやや大きく、斜面も長い(距離 = h/sinθ)から。 The heat equals the work done by friction (friction force μmg·cosθ × distance slid). On a shallow slope the friction force is slightly larger and the slope is much longer (distance = h/sinθ). With h = 1.0 m and μ = 0.10, the 15° slope is about 3.9 m long and 3.66 J became heat.

The ball is treated as a non-rotating point sliding on the slope (rolling/rotational energy is ignored), with m = 1.0 kg, g = 9.8 m/s² and no air resistance. The two comparison angles are chosen automatically from "Angle θ ★" (★ marks the slider's angle). Since the formula v = √(2gh) is beyond the lower-secondary curriculum, focus on comparing the numbers (same speed, different time) and reading the energy bars.
