Uniform Motion and Inertia: Cart and Spaceship

Uniform Motion and Inertia: Cart and Spaceship 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand, through a cart on slopes and a spaceship, that an object's speed or direction changes only when a (net) force acts on it, and that with no force (zero net force) it stays at rest or keeps moving in uniform linear motion (the law of inertia).
Open the simulation

Predict (before you touch anything)

When a cart moves along a frictionless flat rail, do you think its speed gradually decreases, stays the same, or gradually increases?💡 水平なレールの上で、台車の進む向きにはたらく力はあるでしょうか。On a flat rail, is there any force acting along the cart's direction of motion?
If a spaceship in outer space turns off its engine, what do you think happens to its speed afterwards?💡 宇宙空間には空気の抵抗や摩擦がほとんどありません。 Space has almost no air resistance or friction. Think about what forces act on the ship after the engine is turned off.

Try it

  1. 初期値(「A 下り坂の高さ h」1.0 m、「A 水平レールの長さ L」4.0 m)のまま上段 A を観察する。 With the default settings ("A Slope height h" 1.0 m, "A Flat rail length L" 4.0 m), watch the top panel A. On the down slope, the flat rail and the up slope, watch how the velocity arrow above the cart, the v value, and the spacing of the yellow dots (positions every 0.15 s) change. Use "Pause" if needed.
Change "A Flat rail length L" to 8.0 m and to 1.0 m, and compare the height where the cart stops on the up slope with the dotted line (the starting height h). Then set "A Slope height h" to 2.0 m and check again.
In the bottom panel B, compare the ship's v value, the spacing of the yellow dots, and the shape of the "Speed v" graph at the top right, before and after the ship crosses the "Engine off" line ("B Engine thrust F" 1.2 N).
Set "B Engine thrust F" to 2.4 N and check how the speed after the engine is turned off changes, and whether it still stays constant afterwards.
Set "B Collision force (impulse) J" to 0.0, 0.5, 1.5 and 3.0 N·s, and observe the direction and length of the velocity arrow when the ship hits the asteroid (or misses it when J = 0), and the displayed Δv = J/m.

Check

How did the cart's speed change on the down slope, the flat rail and the up slope?→ 下り坂では速くなり(a = +4.9 m/s²)、水平レールでは h = 1.0 m のとき約 4.43 m/s のまま一定(a = 0、点の間隔も等しい)、上り坂では遅くなって(a = −4.9 m/s²)最後に 0 になった。It sped up on the down slope (a = +4.9 m/s²), stayed constant at about 4.43 m/s on the flat rail when h = 1.0 m (a = 0, with equally spaced dots), and slowed down on the up slope (a = −4.9 m/s²) until it reached 0.
When you changed the flat rail length L, did the height where the cart stopped on the up slope change?→ 変わらない。 No. Whether L was 1.0 m or 8.0 m, the cart rose to the dotted line at height h and stopped, showing "Height = h ✓". This is because the speed does not change on the flat rail.
What happened to the ship's speed after the engine was turned off? Give the value for F = 1.2 N.→ 減速せず、約 2.45 m/s のまま一定になった。 It did not slow down; it stayed constant at about 2.45 m/s. The "Speed v" graph became flat from the engine-off point and the yellow dots became equally spaced. With 2.4 N of thrust the speed at cut-off is larger (about 3.5 m/s), but it still stays constant afterwards.
When did the ship's velocity change? What changed when you made the collision strength J larger?→ エンジン噴射中と、小惑星に衝突した瞬間だけ。 Only while the engine was firing and at the instant of the collision; after the collision it moved in uniform linear motion again. A larger J gave a larger velocity change Δv = J/m and bent the path more (with J = 0 the ship misses and its velocity does not change).

Think further

Space probes can keep flying for years while hardly using their engines. Explain why, using what you saw in this simulation.→ 宇宙空間では運動を妨げる力(空気抵抗や摩擦)がほとんどはたらかないので、慣性によって速さと向きを保ったまま進み続けられる。 In space almost no force (air resistance or friction) opposes the motion, so the probe keeps its speed and direction by inertia. An engine is needed only to change the velocity (in reality the gravity of the Sun and planets still acts on it).
After the collision the ship changed direction. Why do we say its velocity changed even if only the direction changed? Think about the difference between velocity and speed.→ 速度は速さと向きをあわせたもので、矢印の長さが速さ、矢印の向きが運動の向きを表す。 Velocity includes both speed and direction: the arrow's length shows the speed and its direction shows the direction of motion. In the collision the external force changed both the direction and the length of the arrow, so the velocity changed. A change in direction alone is also evidence that a force acted.

This is an ideal model with friction and air resistance set exactly to zero, a 30° slope, and a 1 kg spaceship. Both panels replay automatically, and moving a slider restarts that panel immediately. The collision strength J (impulse, N·s) is beyond junior-high level, so treat it as "how strong the collision force is"; because the ship hits the asteroid off-center, the main effect is a change of direction, which is worth pointing out.
