Inertia Experiment: Cart and Load

中3 · 物理単元: 等速直線運動と慣性Inertia Experiment: Cart and Load 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that objects tend to keep their state of motion (inertia), so when the cart stops suddenly the load keeps sliding: with no friction it continues in uniform linear motion, and with friction it stops after a sliding distance of v²/(2μg).

Predict (before you touch anything)

When the cart hits the stopper and stops suddenly, what do you think happens to the load on top of it? Think about the case with no friction at all.💡 載物には、台車が止まった瞬間に前向きや後ろ向きの力がはたらくでしょうか。At the moment the cart stops, is there any force pushing the load forward or backward?
When there is friction, how do you think the sliding distance of the load changes if the friction coefficient is doubled?💡 摩擦は運動の向きと逆向きにはたらき、物体を減速させます。 Friction acts opposite to the motion and slows the object down. Think about what happens when the deceleration is twice as large.

Try it

Set the "Cart speed v" slider to 2.0 m/s and "Friction coefficient μ" to μ = 0.00, then press "Start". Watch the cart hit the stopper at the 10 m mark after about 5 s, and watch the lines on the x-t graph and the v-t graph.
When the run stops at t = 10.0 s, read the "load speed" and "distance slid so far" at the top of the screen, and confirm that the load's (orange) line on the v-t graph stays a horizontal line at 2 m/s even after the cart stops.
Set "Friction coefficient μ" to μ = 0.20 (the top right shows "Next run: ... (applied on Reset)"). Press "Reset" and then "Start", and compare the value of the sliding distance v²/(2μg), the dashed "Predicted stop" line, and where the load actually stops.
Change to μ = 0.40, press "Reset" and then "Start" again, and compare the sliding distance with the μ = 0.20 run.
Return to μ = 0.00, run the experiment with "Cart speed v" set to 1.0 m/s and 1.5 m/s, and check whether the slope of the constant-speed part of the x-t graph matches the set speed (e.g. at 1.5 m/s, 6 m in 4 s).

Check

What shape is the x-t graph while the cart moves at constant speed? What is its slope when v = 2.0 m/s?→ 原点を通る直線になり、5 s で 10 m 進むので傾きは 2 m/s で、設定した速さと一致する。 It is a straight line through the origin; the cart travels 10 m in 5 s, so the slope is 2 m/s, matching the set speed. Meanwhile the v-t graph is a horizontal line at 2 m/s.
With μ = 0.00, how did the load's speed and position change after the cart stopped?→ 載物の速さは 2.00 m/s のまま変わらず、v-t グラフは水平線のまま。 The load's speed stayed at 2.00 m/s and its v-t line stayed horizontal. On the x-t graph the cart's line became flat at 10 m, while the load's line kept rising with the same slope and reached 20 m at t = 10 s (distance slid: 10.00 m).
With v = 2.0 m/s, what was the load's sliding distance for μ = 0.20 and for μ = 0.40?→ μ = 0.20 で約 1.02 m、μ = 0.40 で約 0.51 m。 About 1.02 m for μ = 0.20 and about 0.51 m for μ = 0.40. Doubling μ roughly halves the sliding distance, and the load stopped at the dashed "Predicted stop" line.
With μ > 0, what shape did the load's v-t graph take after the cart stopped?→ 右下がりの直線になり、速さが一定の割合で 0 まで減った(μ = 0.20 では約 1 s、μ = 0.40 では約 0.5 s で停止)。 It became a straight line sloping down, with speed decreasing at a steady rate to 0 (stopping after about 1 s for μ = 0.20 and about 0.5 s for μ = 0.40). The cart's speed, by contrast, dropped to 0 instantly at the stop.

Think further

Why do standing passengers lurch forward when a train brakes suddenly? Explain using this experiment.→ 電車(台車)は止められても、乗客(載物)の体は慣性によってそれまでの速さで進み続けようとするから。 The train (cart) is stopped, but the passenger's body (load) tends to keep moving at the earlier speed because of inertia. No force pushes the passenger forward; the only force stopping them is friction at their feet and similar forces.
If the cart's speed is doubled, how many times longer will the sliding distance be for the same μ? The sliding distance is proportional to v², so it becomes 4 times longer. For example with μ = 0.20, it is about 0.26 m at v = 1.0 m/s and about 1.02 m at v = 2.0 m/s (you can check this in the sliding distance readout).

The stopper is at 10 m and each run ends at t = 10 s, so with the default v = 1.0 m/s the cart stops just as the run ends and no sliding is seen; use v = 1.5 to 2.0 m/s. The model assumes the cart stops instantly and that the load slides with the same μ even after falling off the cart (the tipping/falling drawing is only visual and does not affect the motion). The coefficient μ is beyond the junior-high curriculum in Japan, so treat it simply as "how strong the friction is".
