Forces on a Slope and Sliding Simulator

Forces on a Slope and Sliding Simulator 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that gravity on an object on a slope can be resolved into a component parallel to the slope and a component perpendicular to it, that the parallel component grows as the slope gets steeper, and that once it exceeds the maximum friction the object starts to slide and speeds up at a steady rate.

Predict (before you touch anything)

As the slope angle increases, do you think the direction and length of the gravity arrow on the object will change?💡 重力は地球が物体を引く力です。 Gravity is the Earth pulling on the object. Does the tilt of the slope affect the direction in which the Earth pulls?
On the same slope, if you let a 5 kg object and a 10 kg object slide, which do you think will speed up faster?💡 質量が2倍になると、斜面に平行な分力だけでなく、摩擦力や動かしにくさも変わることに注意しましょう。Notice that when the mass doubles, not only the parallel component but also the friction and how hard the object is to move change.

With the default settings (Angle θ 30°, Mass m 5.0 kg, Friction coefficient μ 0.30), identify the arrows for Gravity mg (red), mg·sinθ (orange), mg·cosθ (green), Normal force N (blue) and Friction f (purple), and the dashed rectangle that resolves gravity.
Move the "Angle θ" slider from 0° to 60° and watch the direction and length of the red gravity arrow and how the mg·sinθ and mg·cosθ values change. Also check what happens to mg·sinθ at θ = 0°.
Set θ to 30° and press "Start". Watch the object slide and record "Acceleration a", "Velocity v", "Time t" and "Distance". After "Reset", set θ to 15°, press "Start" and compare.
Press "Reset", set θ to 17°, press "Start", and read the message at the top comparing tanθ and μ.
Keeping θ at 30°, set "Mass m" to 10.0 kg, press "Start", and compare the forces and acceleration with 5.0 kg. Finally set "Friction coefficient μ" to 0 and check the acceleration.

Check

What happened to the gravity arrow mg when you changed θ? What happened to its components?→ 重力の矢印は常に真下を向き、長さ(5.0 kg で 49.0 N)も変わらなかった。 The gravity arrow always pointed straight down and its length (49.0 N for 5.0 kg) did not change. As θ increased, mg·sinθ got larger (12.7 N at 15°, 24.5 N at 30°) and mg·cosθ got smaller (47.3 N at 15°, 42.4 N at 30°). At θ = 0°, mg·sinθ = 0.0 N so its arrow disappeared, and mg·cosθ = normal force = 49.0 N.
What happened when you pressed Start at θ = 15° and at θ = 30°?→ 15° では mg·sinθ=12.7 N が最大摩擦力 14.2 N 以下なので「静止中(力がつり合う)」となり、摩擦力 f=12.7 N が斜面に平行な分力とつり合った。 At 15°, mg·sinθ = 12.7 N was not more than the maximum friction of 14.2 N, so it showed "At rest (forces balance)" and the friction f = 12.7 N balanced the parallel component. At 30°, mg·sinθ = 24.5 N exceeded the maximum friction of 12.7 N, so the object slid with acceleration 2.35 m/s², reaching about 4.1 m/s after about 1.75 s.
tanθ = 0.31 was just above μ = 0.30, so it slid, but the acceleration was only 0.05 m/s², so it started moving very slowly.
How did the forces and acceleration change when the mass was 10.0 kg?→ 重力は 98.0 N、mg·sinθ は 49.0 N、最大摩擦力は 25.5 N と、すべての力が2倍になったが、加速度は 2.35 m/s² のまま変わらなかった。 Gravity became 98.0 N, mg·sinθ 49.0 N and the maximum friction 25.5 N, so every force doubled, but the acceleration stayed at 2.35 m/s². With μ = 0, the acceleration became 4.90 m/s².

Think further

Why does the acceleration down the slope stay the same even when the mass is doubled?→ 斜面に平行な分力も摩擦力も質量に比例して2倍になるので、物体を進める力(その差)も2倍になる。 Both the parallel component and the friction double with the mass, so the net force driving the object (their difference) also doubles. But the object is also twice as hard to accelerate (twice the mass), so the rate of speed increase stays the same.
Why is the normal force equal to mg·cosθ rather than equal to the full weight mg?→ 斜面が物体を押し返すのは、重力のうち斜面に垂直な分力 mg·cosθ とつり合うためだから。 The slope pushes back only to balance the part of gravity perpendicular to it, mg·cosθ. The other component, mg·sinθ, is parallel to the slope, so the slope does not push against it (friction resists it, or it accelerates the object).

sinθ, cosθ, tanθ, the friction coefficient μ and the formula a = g(sinθ − μcosθ) are high-school content, so at junior-high level focus on how the arrow lengths change and on the idea that the object slides once the parallel component beats friction. The model uses the same μ for sliding (kinetic) friction as for static friction and ignores air resistance. When the object reaches the bottom of the slope it stops with "Reached the bottom and stopped".
