Air's Journey over a Mountain: Lapse Rates and the Foehn Effect

Air's Journey over a Mountain: Lapse Rates and the Foehn Effect 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that rising air cools 1℃ per 100 m until a cloud forms and 0.6℃ per 100 m after that, and that air which has lost its water as rain warms 1℃ per 100 m as it descends, so the leeward side ends up hotter and drier than the windward side (the foehn effect).

Predict (before you touch anything)

When moist 30℃ air crosses a 2000 m mountain and comes down to the foot on the other side (0 m), do you think its temperature will be higher than, equal to, or lower than 30℃?💡 上りと下りで、100mあたりの気温の変わり方が同じかどうかに注目しましょう。 Think about whether the temperature changes by the same amount per 100 m on the way up and on the way down. Whether a cloud forms is the key.
If the incoming air is more humid, do you think the height where clouds start to form (the cloud base) will be higher or lower?💡 湿度が高い空気は露点が高くなります。 More humid air has a higher dew point. Think about how far the rising air must climb for its temperature to fall to the dew point.

Try it

With "A Humidity of incoming air" at 70% and "B Speed" at ×1.0, press "Restart" and watch the air parcel cross the mountain. Record the temperature (solid line) and dew point (dashed line) in the upper graph, the "Temperature", "Dew point", "Rel. humidity" and "Altitude" readouts, and how the mode label changes.
Press "Pause" when the air reaches the cloud base (the "Cloud base (dew point)" line) and again near the summit. Read the altitude and temperature each time and calculate how many ℃ the air cooled per 100 m.
Resume and read the temperature, dew point and relative humidity when the air reaches the leeward ground, and compare them with the windward ground (30.0℃). Also check which slope the raindrops fall on.
Set "A Humidity of incoming air" to 50%, 80% and 100%, press "Restart" each time, and compare the cloud-base height and the leeward ground temperature (also see the values in the explanation below the simulation).

Check

At 70% humidity, how much did the temperature drop per 100 m while rising before the cloud formed?→ 1.0℃。 1.0℃. It fell from 30.0℃ to about 23.9℃ (equal to the dew point) at the cloud base, about 608 m. The mode label read "Now dry adiabatic cooling".
How did the rate of cooling change from the cloud base to the summit?→ 100mあたり 0.6℃ とゆるやかになった。 It slowed to 0.6℃ per 100 m. The temperature went from 23.9℃ at about 608 m to about 15.6℃ at the 2000 m summit. In this part, the temperature equaled the dew point, relative humidity was 100%, and rain fell on the windward slope.
When the air reached the leeward ground, what were its temperature and relative humidity?→ 気温は約 35.6℃ で、風上側の 30.0℃ より約 5.6℃ 高かった。 The temperature was about 35.6℃, about 5.6℃ higher than the 30.0℃ windward side. The dew point stayed at 15.6℃ and the relative humidity dropped to about 30%, so the air was hot and dry. There was no cloud or rain on the leeward side.
How did the cloud-base height and the leeward temperature change at 50%, 80% and 100% humidity?→ 50% では雲底 約 1156 m・風下 約 33.4℃、80% では 約 383 m・約 36.5℃、100% では地表(0 m)から雲ができて 約 38.0℃ になった。 At 50%, the cloud base was about 1156 m and the leeward ground about 33.4℃; at 80%, about 383 m and 36.5℃; at 100%, the cloud formed right from the ground (0 m) and the leeward ground reached about 38.0℃. The higher the humidity, the lower the cloud base and the hotter the leeward side.

Think further

Why does the air cool by less than 1℃ per 100 m inside the cloud?→ 雲の中では水蒸気が凝結して水滴になり、そのとき熱(潜熱)を出す。 Inside the cloud, water vapor condenses into droplets and releases heat (latent heat). This heat cancels part of the cooling from expansion, so the lapse rate drops to 0.6℃ per 100 m.
If the air crossed the mountain without forming a cloud (and without rain), what would the leeward ground temperature be? It would cool and warm at 1℃ per 100 m both ways, reaching 10℃ at the summit and returning to 30℃ at the foot, the same as the windward side. The leeward side becomes hotter in the foehn effect only because the air cooled at just 0.6℃ per 100 m for part of the climb (in the cloud) but warms at 1℃ per 100 m all the way down.

The model treats the dew point as constant during the climb, so the cloud base is (30 − dew point) × 100 m; it uses a fixed moist lapse rate of 0.6℃ per 100 m and assumes all cloud water falls as rain on the windward side. In reality the dew point drops slightly as air rises, and the moist lapse rate varies with temperature. At junior-high level this is an advanced topic, so focus on the idea that the lapse rate differs between the climb and the descent.
