Sea/Land Breezes and Monsoons

中2 · 地学単元: 大気圧と風、海陸風・季節風Sea/Land Breezes and Monsoons 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that land heats up and cools down more easily than the sea, so temperature differences create pressure differences that drive sea and land breezes over a day and monsoons that reverse direction between summer and winter over a year.

Predict (before you touch anything)

On a sunny summer afternoon at the coast, do you think the wind near the ground blows from sea to land or from land to sea? What about at night?💡 昼に日光を受けたとき、砂浜と海水ではどちらが早く熱くなるかを思い出しましょう。Recall which gets hot faster in the sunshine: the sand on the beach or the seawater.
Heavy snow falls on the Sea of Japan side of Japan in winter. Which direction of wind do you think this is related to?💡 冬の大陸と海では、どちらが冷たいでしょうか。 In winter, which is colder: the continent or the ocean? Also check on a map what lies to the northwest and southeast of Japan.

Select "Sea/land breeze" and set "Time" to 14:00. Record the "Sea" and "Land" temperatures, where H (high pressure) and L (low pressure) are, and the direction of the surface "Sea breeze (sea→land)" arrow and the arrow aloft.
Set "Time" to 02:00 and record the same items. Then move it to around 08:00 and 20:00, and check that the explanation at the bottom switches to "Morning/evening" and the wind weakens.
Press "▶ Auto" to watch a whole day, and compare how much the sea and land temperatures each change. Press "■ Stop" when finished.
Select "Monsoon" and set "Month" to Jan. Record the Siberian High (H), the NW monsoon, the snow clouds over the Sea of Japan, "dry and sunny" on the Pacific side, and the continent and sea temperatures.
Move "Month" to Apr and then Jul, and record how the wind direction, the positions of H and L, and the clouds change.

Check

At 14:00 and at 02:00, what were the land and sea temperatures, the pressure pattern, and the surface wind direction?→ 14:00 は陸 30.0℃・海 約 20.9℃で、陸側が L(上昇気流)、海側が H(下降気流)、地表は海→陸の海風。 At 14:00 the land was 30.0°C and the sea about 20.9°C; L (rising air) was over the land and H (sinking air) over the sea, with a sea-to-land sea breeze at the surface. At 02:00 the land was 10.0°C and the sea about 19.1°C; H was over the land and L over the sea, with a land-to-sea land breeze.
Compared with the surface wind, which way did the wind aloft blow?→ 地表と逆向き。 In the opposite direction. Rising air, the flow aloft, sinking air and the surface wind connect into a closed loop of circulating air.
Over one day, how did the size of the temperature change differ between sea and land?→ 陸は約 10℃〜30℃と大きく変化する(±10℃)が、海は約 19℃〜21℃とほとんど変化しない(±1℃)。The land changes a lot, from about 10°C to 30°C (±10°C), while the sea barely changes, from about 19°C to 21°C (±1°C).
How did the monsoon direction and pressure pattern change between Jan and Jul?→ 1月は大陸が -22℃に冷えてシベリア高気圧(H)ができ、北西の季節風が吹いて日本海側に雪、太平洋側は乾いた晴天。 In Jan the continent cools to -22°C and the Siberian High (H) forms; the NW monsoon brings snow to the Sea of Japan side and dry, sunny weather to the Pacific side. In Jul the continent warms to 32°C and becomes low pressure (L); a humid SE monsoon blows from the Pacific High (H) and rain clouds form over the mountains. Around Apr the pressure difference is small and the monsoon is weak.

Think further

Sea/land breezes and monsoons work on very different time scales. In what way do they share the same mechanism?→ どちらも陸(大陸)の方が海よりあたたまりやすく冷えやすいことで温度差ができ、あたたかい側の空気が上昇して低気圧、冷たい側が下降して高気圧になり、地表では高気圧から低気圧へ風が吹く。 In both, the land (continent) heats and cools more easily than the sea, creating a temperature difference. Air rises over the warmer side (low pressure) and sinks over the colder side (high pressure), and at the surface wind blows from high to low pressure. Sea/land breezes repeat this over a day, monsoons over a year.
The winter NW monsoon is dry when it leaves the continent. Why does it bring heavy snow to the Sea of Japan side?→ 冷たく乾いた空気が比較的あたたかい日本海の上を通るときに水蒸気を多く取りこみ、雪雲ができる。 The cold, dry air picks up a lot of water vapor as it crosses the relatively warm Sea of Japan, forming snow clouds. When this air hits the mountains of Japan it rises and drops snow on the Sea of Japan side. After crossing the mountains it has lost much of its moisture, so the Pacific side is dry and sunny.

For teachers

Temperatures follow a simple model (land ±10°C, sea ±1°C; for monsoons, continent -22 to 32°C and ocean 12 to 26°C), and wind strength depends only on the temperature difference. The "Month" slider covers only Jan to Jul, so explain that autumn mirrors spring. The L over the Pacific in winter is a schematic to close the loop; have students check the real winter pattern (high to the west, low to the east) on a weather map.
