Gas Diffusion in the Alveolus
Students understand that in the alveolus oxygen moves from the alveolus into the blood and carbon dioxide moves from the blood into the alveolus, each from higher to lower concentration (diffusion), and that how much moves depends on the breathing rate and the blood flow speed.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Between the alveolus and the capillary, which way do you think oxygen and carbon dioxide each move? Compare the air you breathe in with the blood returning from the body: which has more oxygen, and which has more carbon dioxide?
If blood flows past the alveolus very fast, do you think each bit of blood will pick up more oxygen, or not enough?💡 血液が肺胞のとなりにいる時間の長さに注目しましょう。Think about how long the blood stays next to the alveolus.
Try it
In the starting state ("Breathing rate (breaths per minute)" 12 /min, "Blood flow speed" ×1.00), watch blue O2 move from the alveolus into the capillary and gray CO2 move from the capillary into the alveolus, and watch red blood cells turn from dark red to bright red as they travel from "In (venous)" on the left to "Out (arterial)" on the right.
Record "Alveolar O2" and "Alveolar CO2" at the top left, and "O2 saturation (outflow)" and "Transit time" at the bottom (about 13%, about 5%, about 97%, 4.0 s).
Raise "Blood flow speed" to ×5.00 and record the change in transit time, O2 saturation of the outflow, and the color of red blood cells at the right end. Then lower it to ×0.25 and compare in the same way.
Set "Blood flow speed" back to ×1.00, then compare "Alveolar O2", "Alveolar CO2" and "CO2 blood→alveolus .../s" at the bottom with "Breathing rate" at 40 /min and at 1 /min (at 1 /min, wait 30 seconds or more).
Predict the answer to the "Quiz" on the right before opening it, then open it to check.
Check
Which way did O2 and CO2 each cross the membrane?→ O2 は肺胞→血液、CO2 は血液→肺胞。 O2 moved from the alveolus into the blood, and CO2 from the blood into the alveolus. Each moves independently, from higher to lower concentration.
At blood flow speed ×5.00, what happened to the transit time and the O2 saturation of the outflowing blood?→ 通過時間は 4.0 秒から 0.8 秒に短くなり、酸素飽和度は約 97% から約 88〜91% に下がった。 Transit time dropped from 4.0 s to 0.8 s, and O2 saturation fell from about 97% to about 88-91%. The red blood cells at the right end do not turn fully bright red, so oxygen loading is incomplete.
At a breathing rate of 1 /min, what happened to the gas in the alveolus and to CO2 release?→ 肺胞O2 は約 6〜9% まで下がり、肺胞CO2 は約 6% まで上がった。 Alveolar O2 fell to about 6-9% and alveolar CO2 rose to about 6%. The CO2 concentration difference becomes small, so "CO2 blood→alveolus" drops to about 0-2/s, and O2 saturation also falls to roughly 80-90%.
At a breathing rate of 40 /min, what happened to O2 and CO2 in the alveolus?→ 空気がよく入れかわるので、肺胞O2 は約 17% に上がり、肺胞CO2 は約 4% に下がった。 The air is replaced often, so alveolar O2 rose to about 17% and alveolar CO2 fell to about 4%. More CO2 is released than at 12 /min.
Think further
The lungs have a huge number of tiny alveoli, each wrapped in a net of capillaries. How does this structure help gas exchange?→ 肺胞が小さくたくさんあることで空気とふれる表面積が非常に大きくなり、毛細血管が近くを取り囲むことで血液と空気の距離が短くなる。 Many small alveoli give a very large surface area in contact with air, and capillaries wrapped closely around them keep the blood very close to the air. This lets large amounts of oxygen and carbon dioxide be exchanged efficiently.
During hard exercise, breathing becomes faster and deeper. Based on this simulator, what role does faster breathing play?→ 肺胞の空気がよく入れかわり、肺胞内の O2 が高く CO2 が低く保たれる。 It replaces the alveolar air often, keeping alveolar O2 high and CO2 low. This keeps the concentration difference with the blood large, so more oxygen is taken in and more carbon dioxide is given off.
Common misconceptions
The misconception that the lungs actively push oxygen into the blood and pull carbon dioxide out. The gases simply move from higher to lower concentration (diffusion), and O2 and CO2 move independently.
The misconception that faster blood flow always means each bit of blood picks up more oxygen. If blood flows too fast, it spends less time next to the alveolus and cannot load enough oxygen.

Meter values rise and fall with the "Inhaling/Exhaling" phase, so have students watch for a few seconds and read a typical value. Diffusion and oxygen saturation go slightly beyond the grade 8 curriculum; describe them as "spreading from where there is more to where there is less" and "the share of red blood cell capacity already carrying oxygen". Transit times and molecule counts are model values; in the real body, blood flow and breathing are adjusted together, for example during exercise.
