Reflexes and Nerve Signals Simulator
Students understand that in a reflex the signal travels sensory nerve → spinal cord → motor nerve without passing through the brain, so the time from stimulus to response is shorter than for a response decided by the brain.
Open the simulation
Predict (before you touch anything)
When you tap just below the knee (the knee tendon), the leg kicks up. Which parts of the body do you think the signal passes through to reach the thigh muscle? Think about where the part that receives the stimulus, the part that sends the command, and the part that moves are each located.
Which do you think is faster: moving the leg after the brain thinks "I'll lift my leg when it's tapped," or the leg moving by reflex? Pay attention to how long the signal's route is and whether there is anywhere it has to stop along the way.
Try it
With "Spinal reflex" selected and "Conduction speed" at ×1.0, press "Stimulate". After the hammer taps the knee, watch the glowing pulse travel Receptor (knee tendon) → Sensory nerve → Synapse (spinal cord) → Motor nerve → Effector (thigh muscle), and the leg kick up.
Record the time shown in "Response time" and "Reflex (latest)" at the bottom (about 1.24 s).
Switch the mode to "Brain decides" and press "Stimulate". Check that the pulse goes "Up↑" from the spinal cord to the cerebrum, shows "Deciding", then comes back "↓Down" to the motor nerve. Record the "Brain (latest)" time (about 3.37 s) and the "... s slower" value.
Set the "Conduction speed" slider to ×3.0, press "Stimulate" once in "Spinal reflex" and once in "Brain decides", and compare the two response times (about 0.40 s and about 1.64 s).
Check
In "Spinal reflex" mode, did the pulse go to the brain? Where did it turn toward the motor nerve?→ 大脳へは向かわない(上行・下行の道は薄く「(反射では通らない)」と表示される)。 No, it does not go to the brain (the up and down paths are faded and labeled "(not used in reflex)"). The pulse is passed from the sensory nerve to the motor nerve at the synapse inside the spinal cord.
At conduction speed ×1.0, what were the response times in the two modes, and how big was the difference?→ 脊髄反射は約 1.24 s、大脳で判断は約 3.37 s で、大脳で判断する方が約 2.1 s 遅い。The spinal reflex took about 1.24 s and the brain-decided response about 3.37 s, so the brain route was about 2.1 s slower.
When does the muscle contract and the leg kick up: when the pulse reaches which point?→ パルスが運動神経を通って効果器(太ももの筋肉)に着いた直後。 Right after the pulse travels along the motor nerve and reaches the effector (thigh muscle). The muscle never contracts before that, and afterward it relaxes slowly.
When you set the conduction speed to ×3.0, what happened to the time difference between the two modes?→ どちらも速くなるが(約 0.40 s と約 1.64 s)、大脳で判断する方が約 1.2 s 遅いまま。 Both get faster (about 0.40 s and about 1.64 s), but the brain route is still about 1.2 s slower. The 0.8 s decision time in the brain does not shrink when conduction speed increases, so the difference never disappears.
Think further
When your hand touches a hot kettle, you pull it away before you even feel the heat. How does the fast mechanism of a reflex help protect the body?→ 反射は大脳で判断せず脊髄から直接運動神経に命令が出るので、道のりが短く判断の時間もかからない。 In a reflex the command goes from the spinal cord straight to the motor nerve without a decision in the brain, so the route is short and no decision time is needed. This lets the body move away from danger quickly and reduces injury. You feel the heat only after the signal later reaches the brain.
Is dodging a ball you see flying toward you a reflex? Explain which of the simulator's two modes it is closer to, and why.→ 「大脳で判断」に近い。 It is closer to "Brain decides". The brain judges the information from the eyes, and its command travels through the spinal cord and motor nerves to the muscles. It is a conscious response, so it takes longer than a reflex.
Common misconceptions
The misconception that every body movement is commanded by the brain. In a reflex, the command comes from the spinal cord and the brain is not involved.
The misconception that a conscious response would become as fast as a reflex if nerve signals simply traveled faster. The time needed for the brain to decide remains, so a difference is left.

Response times are stretched for the animation (a real knee-jerk reflex takes a few hundredths of a second), and the 0.8 s decision time is a fixed model value. The difference between modes is calculated from the two "latest" values, so have students use the same conduction speed before comparing. In a real reflex the signal also reaches the brain a little later so you feel the tap, but this model omits that path in reflex mode.
