Heating Iron and Sulfur: Making Iron Sulfide and the 7:4 Ratio
Students understand that iron and sulfur atoms combine 1:1 to form iron sulfide (FeS), so they always react in a fixed mass ratio of iron : sulfur = 7 : 4, any excess is left unreacted, and the total mass is the same before and after the reaction (law of conservation of mass).

Predict (before you touch anything)
If 7.0 g of iron and 5.2 g of sulfur are mixed and heated, how many grams of iron sulfide do you think will form? Will all 12.2 g become iron sulfide?💡 鉄と硫黄が結びつくとき、原子は何個と何個の組で結びつくのかに注目しましょう。Think about how many atoms of each element join together each time iron and sulfur combine.
How do you think the total mass of iron and sulfur before heating will compare with the total mass after heating (iron sulfide plus anything left over)?💡 化学変化のとき、原子が新しく生まれたり消えたりするかを考えましょう。Think about whether atoms are created or destroyed in a chemical change.
Try it
In the starting state ("Mass of iron (Fe)" 7.0 g (10 atoms), "Mass of sulfur (S)" 5.2 g (13 atoms)), watch the heating animation and see in the atom model how one Fe atom and one S atom pair up to form FeS. Press "↺ Heat again" to watch it again ("❚❚ Pause" stops it partway).
After it is "Done", read the "Before" and "After" bars in "Mass comparison (macro)" and the "7:4 ratio", "Extra" and "Mass conserved" lines below them.
Set the "Mass of sulfur (S)" slider to 4.0 g (10 atoms), let it heat, and check what is left over.
Increase "Mass of iron (Fe)" to 14.0 g (20 atoms), keeping sulfur at 4.0 g, and check the mass of iron sulfide formed and what is left over.
Set "Mass of iron (Fe)" to 2.8 g (4 atoms) and "Mass of sulfur (S)" to 8.0 g (20 atoms), and check that the leftover substance switches and that the mass-conservation equation still holds.
Check
In the starting state (7.0 g iron, 5.2 g sulfur), how many grams of iron sulfide formed, and what was left over?→ 鉄 7.0 g と硫黄 4.0 g が反応して硫化鉄が 11.0 g でき、硫黄 1.2 g(原子 3 個)が未反応で残った。 7.0 g of iron reacted with 4.0 g of sulfur to make 11.0 g of iron sulfide, and 1.2 g of sulfur (3 atoms) was left unreacted. Not all 12.2 g became iron sulfide.
With 7.0 g of iron and 4.0 g of sulfur, was anything left over?→ 「余りなし(ちょうど 7:4 で全部反応)」と表示され、Fe 10 個と S 10 個がすべて組になり、硫化鉄 11.0 g だけができた。It showed "No extra (all reacted at exactly 7:4)": all 10 Fe atoms and 10 S atoms paired up, giving only 11.0 g of iron sulfide.
When the iron was increased to 14.0 g (sulfur still 4.0 g), did the mass of iron sulfide increase?→ 増えなかった。 No. Iron sulfide stayed at 11.0 g, and 7.0 g of iron (10 atoms) was left unreacted. The reaction stops when the sulfur runs out.
With 2.8 g of iron and 8.0 g of sulfur, what did the mass-conservation equation show?→ 鉄 2.8 g と硫黄 1.6 g が反応して硫化鉄 4.4 g ができ、硫黄 6.4 g が余った。 2.8 g of iron reacted with 1.6 g of sulfur to make 4.4 g of iron sulfide, and 6.4 g of sulfur was left over. The total before, 10.8 g, equals 4.4 g + 6.4 g, so mass was conserved.
Think further
Why is the mass ratio of iron to sulfur that reacts always 7:4? Explain using the atom model.→ 鉄原子と硫黄原子は必ず1個ずつ(1:1)結びつき、鉄原子1個と硫黄原子1個の質量の比が 7:4 だから。 Iron and sulfur atoms always join one to one (1:1), and the mass of one iron atom to one sulfur atom is in the ratio 7:4. However many pairs form, the reacting masses of iron and sulfur stay in the ratio 7:4.
How many grams of sulfur are needed to turn exactly 21 g of iron into iron sulfide with nothing left over? How many grams of iron sulfide will form?→ 鉄:硫黄=7:4 より、硫黄は 21 × 4/7 = 12 g 必要で、硫化鉄は 21 + 12 = 33 g できる(シミュレーターの範囲外なので計算で考える)。Since iron : sulfur = 7 : 4, sulfur needed = 21 × 4/7 = 12 g, and iron sulfide formed = 21 + 12 = 33 g. (This is beyond the simulator's slider range, so work it out by calculation.)
Common misconceptions
The idea that all the mixed iron and sulfur turn into iron sulfide (that they react in whatever ratio they were mixed). In fact they react only in the ratio 7:4, and the excess remains unreacted.
The idea that mass changes when substances change in a reaction. Only the way atoms are combined changes, not the number of atoms, so the total mass is the same before and after.

The model sets one Fe atom at 0.7 g and one S atom at 0.4 g; these are scaled-up values matching the real atomic mass ratio (about 56:32 = 7:4). All masses are set by atom counts, so the sliders move in steps of one atom. In a real experiment some sulfur may burn or vaporize, shifting the ratio, and the reaction continues on its own heat once started — worth mentioning to students.
