Dead Space & Breathing Efficiency Simulator
Students understand that about 150 mL of air in the trachea and bronchi (dead space) never reaches the alveoli and is not used for gas exchange, so the air reaching the alveoli is (tidal volume − 150 mL) × breathing rate, which makes slow, deep breathing more efficient than shallow, fast breathing for the same total amount of air.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Breathing 500 mL 12 times a minute and breathing 250 mL 24 times a minute both move 6.0 L of air per minute. Do you think the same amount of fresh air reaches the alveoli in both cases?💡 息を吸いはじめたとき、口から肺胞までの通り道(気管・気管支)には、直前にはき出しかけた空気が残っていることを考えましょう。Think about what is still sitting in the airway (trachea and bronchi) between the mouth and the alveoli at the moment you start to breathe in.
Try it
In the starting state ("At rest" 500 mL × 12/min), watch the lung diagram: on each inhale the gray particles (old air) enter the alveoli first, followed by the blue particles (fresh air). At the end of an inhale, read the amounts of old air and fresh air under "Air into alveoli (this breath)" next to the trachea.
Read the "Minute ventilation" and "Alveolar ventilation" values at the top, along with the two bars in the comparison graph and the "Reaches alveoli" percentage.
Press the "Shallow & fast" (250 mL × 24/min) button and compare the same values, and the size of the part of the lung volume wave above the 150 mL dead-space line (blue), with "At rest".
Lower the "Tidal volume" slider to 150 mL or less (for example 140 mL) and check the alveolar ventilation value and the warning that appears.
Make other combinations that give a minute ventilation of 6.0 L/min (for example "Tidal volume" 750 mL with "Breathing rate" 8 /min, or 300 mL with 20 /min) and compare their alveolar ventilation.
Check
In "At rest", how many mL of old air and of fresh air entered the alveoli by the end of one inhale?→ 古い空気(死腔に残っていた空気)が 150 mL、新鮮な空気が 350 mL だった。 150 mL of old air (the air left in the dead space) and 350 mL of fresh air. Of the 500 mL, only the part above 150 mL reaches the alveoli as fresh air.
What were the minute ventilation and the alveolar ventilation for "At rest" and for "Shallow & fast"?→ 分時換気量はどちらも 6.0 L/分だが、分時肺胞換気量は「安静時」が 4.2 L/分(届く割合 70%)、「浅く速く」が 2.4 L/分(40%)だった。Minute ventilation was 6.0 L/min for both, but alveolar ventilation was 4.2 L/min for "At rest" (70% reaches the alveoli) and only 2.4 L/min for "Shallow & fast" (40%).
When "Tidal volume" was set to 140 mL, what happened to the alveolar ventilation and the display?→ 分時肺胞換気量は 0.0 L/分(マイナスにはならない)になり、「新鮮な空気が肺胞にほぼ届かず、ガス交換ができません」という警告が表示された。Alveolar ventilation became 0.0 L/min (never negative), and a warning appeared saying that almost no fresh air reaches the alveoli and gas exchange cannot happen.
With the same minute ventilation of 6.0 L/min, what was the alveolar ventilation for 750 mL × 8 and for 300 mL × 20?→ 750 mL × 8回では 4.8 L/分、300 mL × 20回では 3.0 L/分だった。 4.8 L/min for 750 mL × 8 and 3.0 L/min for 300 mL × 20. The deeper each breath, the smaller the share taken up by dead space, and the more air reaches the alveoli.
Think further
Increasing the breathing rate increases minute ventilation, so why does shallow, fast breathing deliver less air to the alveoli?→ 1回の呼吸ごとに死腔の 150 mL ぶんは必ず肺胞に届かずに無駄になるので、呼吸の回数が多いほど無駄になる量も増える。 Every breath wastes the 150 mL of dead space, so the more breaths you take, the more air is wasted. When the tidal volume is small, the dead space takes up a larger share of each breath, so a smaller fraction reaches the alveoli.
Why does breathing through a snorkel tend to make people feel short of breath? Explain using the idea of dead space.→ シュノーケルの管の中の空気も肺胞に届かない死腔となり、死腔が 150 mL より大きくなるので、同じ深さの呼吸でも肺胞に届く新鮮な空気が減るから。 The air inside the snorkel tube also becomes dead space that never reaches the alveoli, so the total dead space is larger than 150 mL and less fresh air reaches the alveoli for the same breath. You must breathe more deeply than usual. (In this simulator dead space is fixed at 150 mL, so work this out with the formula.)
Common misconceptions
The idea that all inhaled air reaches the alveoli and is used for gas exchange. In fact about 150 mL left in the trachea and bronchi never reaches the alveoli and is not used for gas exchange.
The idea that breathing faster always brings in more oxygen. If each breath stays shallow, extra breaths mostly add wasted dead-space air, and the air reaching the alveoli hardly increases.

This is a simplified model in which dead space is fixed at 150 mL, a typical adult value. Real dead space varies with body size, and the model does not show how air mixes inside the alveoli or how fast gas exchange occurs. "Dead space" and "alveolar ventilation" go beyond the junior-high textbook, so you may describe them as "the amount of air that reaches the alveoli".
