Breathing and Gas Exchange in the Alveoli

Breathing and Gas Exchange in the Alveoli 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that when the diaphragm moves down and the chest cavity expands, the pressure in the lungs falls below atmospheric pressure so air flows in, and that in the alveoli oxygen and carbon dioxide are exchanged by diffusion from where their concentration (partial pressure) is higher to where it is lower.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When you breathe in, do the lungs inflate by their own power to suck in air? How do you think the pressure inside the lungs compares with the air pressure outside?💡 肺には筋肉がありません。 The lungs have no muscles of their own. Think about the diaphragm under the chest cavity, and about air flowing from higher to lower pressure.
Between the alveolus and the capillary, which direction do you think oxygen and carbon dioxide each move?💡 肺胞に入ってくる空気と、からだの各部から戻ってきた血液とでは、それぞれの気体の量がどう違うかを考えましょう。Compare how much of each gas there is in the freshly inhaled air and in the blood returning from the body.

Try it

With the starting settings ("Breathing rate" 12 /min, "Diaphragm movement" Medium 4.0 cm, "O₂ in air" 21% Sea level), press "Slow motion" and, in ① Chest cross-section, compare the diaphragm movement, the arrows in the trachea, and the pressure gauges "Air pressure Patm" and "Alveolar pressure Palv" during inhaling and exhaling. Use "Pause" and "Step" to freeze and read values if needed.
In the ② Alveolus & capillary view, watch which way the red O₂ particles and the blue CO₂ particles move, and compare the blood color and PO₂ values at the capillary entrance (from the pulmonary artery) and exit (to the pulmonary vein).
Raise "Breathing rate" to 24 /min and read how the PO₂ and PCO₂ values in the top display and inside the alveolus change. Then lower it to 6 /min and read them again.
Set "Breathing rate" back to 12 /min, then set "Diaphragm movement" to Large 10.0 cm and to Small 1.0 cm, and compare the ventilation and the alveolar PO₂ and PCO₂.
Set "Diaphragm movement" back to Medium 4.0 cm, then lower "O₂ in air" to 16% (~3500 m) and 10% (Everest), and watch the alveolar PO₂, the O₂ particles, and the color of the blood at the exit.

Check

During inhaling, how did the diaphragm move, and how did the alveolar pressure compare with atmospheric pressure? What about during exhaling?→ 吸気では横隔膜が収縮して下がり、胸腔が広がって肺胞内圧が大気圧より低く(圧差 約 −0.6 mmHg)なり、空気が流入した。 When inhaling, the diaphragm contracts and moves down, the chest cavity expands, the alveolar pressure becomes lower than atmospheric pressure (difference about −0.6 mmHg), and air flows in. When exhaling, the diaphragm relaxes and moves up, the alveolar pressure becomes higher (about +0.4 mmHg), and air flows out.
With the starting settings, what were the PO₂ values in the alveolus and in the blood at the capillary entrance and exit? Which way did O₂ and CO₂ move?→ 肺胞の PO₂ は約 98、入口の血液は PO₂ 40(暗赤色)、出口は約 95(鮮紅色)だった。 The alveolar PO₂ was about 98, the blood entering had PO₂ 40 (dark red), and the blood leaving had about 95 (bright red). O₂ moved from alveolus to blood, and CO₂ moved from blood (PCO₂ 46) to alveolus (PCO₂ 41) — each from higher to lower.
How did the alveolar PO₂ and PCO₂ change when "Breathing rate" was 24 /min compared with 6 /min?→ 24 回/分では換気量が約 11.9 L/分に増え、PO₂ は約 124 に上がり PCO₂ は約 21 に下がった。 At 24 /min the ventilation rose to about 11.9 L/min, PO₂ rose to about 124 and PCO₂ fell to about 21. At 6 /min the ventilation was 3.0 L/min, PO₂ fell to about 50 and PCO₂ rose to about 80. More ventilation means more oxygen and less carbon dioxide in the alveoli.
When "O₂ in air" was set to 10% (Everest), what happened to the O₂ movement and to the color of the blood at the exit?→ 肺胞の PO₂ が約 20 まで下がり、入口の血液(PO₂ 40)より低くなったため O₂ の分圧差は 0(停止)となり、O₂ は血液へ移らず、出口の血液も暗赤色のまま(PO₂ 40)だった。 The alveolar PO₂ dropped to about 20, below the incoming blood's PO₂ of 40, so the O₂ difference became 0 (none). No O₂ moved into the blood and the blood at the exit stayed dark red (PO₂ 40). CO₂ kept moving out.

Think further

Why is it useful for gas exchange that the alveolar wall and the capillary wall are each only one cell thick, and that the lungs contain a huge number of alveoli?→ 拡散は濃度の差だけで起こりエネルギーを使わないので、気体が通る距離が短いほど速く移動できる。 Diffusion is driven only by the concentration difference and uses no energy, so the shorter the distance the gases must cross, the faster they move. Having many alveoli gives a very large surface area where air and blood meet, so much more oxygen and carbon dioxide can be exchanged at once.
On a high mountain people feel short of breath and naturally breathe faster and deeper. With less oxygen in the air, the alveolar PO₂ falls (about 62 at 16%), the difference from the blood becomes smaller, and oxygen is taken up less easily. Increasing the breathing rate or the diaphragm movement raises ventilation, which raises the alveolar PO₂, so more oxygen can still enter the blood.

At junior-high level, "partial pressure" can be described as the concentration of a gas. The model is simplified: alveolar O₂ and CO₂ are averages calculated from ventilation, and when the alveolar PO₂ falls below the blood's PO₂ of 40 the O₂ transfer is simply shown as "none". The altitude labels are represented by lowering the oxygen percentage, but at real high altitude air is still about 21% oxygen — it is the lower total air pressure that lowers the oxygen partial pressure.
