Hydrogen + Chlorine: Why the Coefficient Is 2
Students understand that when hydrogen and chlorine combine (H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl), the atoms of one H₂ and one Cl₂ rearrange into two HCl molecules, which is why the coefficient 2 is needed, and that because H₂ and Cl₂ combine only 1:1, whichever is in excess is simply left over.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When one H₂ molecule reacts with one Cl₂ molecule, how many HCl molecules do you think form?💡 反応の前にある H 原子と Cl 原子の数を数え、HCl 1個に使う原子の数と比べましょう。Count the H and Cl atoms before the reaction and compare with how many atoms one HCl uses.
With 4 H₂ and 6 Cl₂, what do you think things will look like after the reaction?💡 1回の反応で H₂ と Cl₂ をそれぞれ何個ずつ使うかを考えましょう。Think about how many H₂ and how many Cl₂ each single reaction uses.
Try it
Playback starts when the page opens. With "Number of Cl₂ molecules (H₂ fixed at 4)" at 4, watch each H₂–Cl₂ pair regroup into 2 HCl until the end.
Press "⏸ Pause", drag the "Reaction progress (drag to scrub)" slider to 0%, 50% and 100%, and read the numbers of H₂, Cl₂ and HCl and the H and Cl atom counts in the "On screen now" line.
Set the number of Cl₂ molecules to 2, move progress to 100%, and check Before, After and Breakdown in the "Atom count" table and the "Leftover molecules" message.
Do the same with 6 Cl₂ molecules, then set progress to about 40% to confirm that the atom counts do not change even in the middle of the reaction.
Check
With 4 Cl₂ and progress 100%, how many HCl formed, and were there any leftover molecules?→ HCl 8 HCl formed (4 pairs × 2 HCl) and there were no leftover molecules. The 8 H atoms and 8 Cl atoms were the same before and after.
With 2 Cl₂, what was left over after the reaction? What happened to the atom counts?→ HCl 4 HCl formed and 2 H₂ were left over unchanged. There were 8 H atoms (HCl 4 + leftover H₂ 4) and 4 Cl atoms, the same as before.
With 6 Cl₂, what was left over?→ HCl が 8個でき、Cl₂ が 2個余った。 8 HCl formed and 2 Cl₂ were left over. There were still 12 Cl atoms (HCl 8 + leftover Cl₂ 4).
What combination of atoms did every HCl molecule on screen have?→ どの HCl も H 1個と Cl 1個だった。 Every HCl had 1 H and 1 Cl. Molecules such as HClCl or H₂Cl never appeared.
Think further
What is wrong with writing the equation as H₂ + Cl₂ → HCl?→ 左辺には H 原子 2個・Cl 原子 2個があるのに、右辺には 1個ずつしかなく、原子の数が合わない。 The left side has 2 H atoms and 2 Cl atoms but the right side has only 1 of each, so the atoms don't balance. Making it 2 HCl gives the same number of atoms on both sides, so the coefficient 2 is added: H₂ + Cl₂ → 2HCl.
If there are 10 H₂ and 7 Cl₂, how many HCl form, and what is left over and how many?→ 1:1 で反応するので 7組が反応し、HCl が 14個でき、H₂ が 3個余る。They react 1:1, so 7 pairs react, forming 14 HCl, and 3 H₂ are left over.
Common misconceptions
The coefficient 2 means the atoms inside HCl are doubled" — a coefficient gives the number of molecules: 2 HCl molecules form. Each HCl always has 1 H and 1 Cl.
The extra molecules still find something to stick to and all react" — molecules with no partner do not react and simply remain.

H₂ is fixed at 4; only the number of Cl₂ can be changed. The "After" column in the count table shows the values when the reaction is finished, while the "On screen now" line shows the in-between state. The real hydrogen–chlorine reaction is an explosive chain reaction started by light or heat; this model only shows the rearrangement of atoms one pair at a time.
