2:1Electrolysis of Water: Atoms Conserved, Volume Ratio 2:1
Students understand that in the electrolysis of water (2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂) the atoms of water molecules rearrange to form hydrogen at the cathode and oxygen at the anode, that the number of atoms never changes at any stage, and that the volumes of hydrogen and oxygen produced are always in a 2:1 ratio.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When water is electrolyzed, do you think more gas collects at the cathode (−) or at the anode (+)? Think about how many hydrogen and oxygen atoms one H₂O molecule contains, and how many atoms make up H₂ and O₂.
Halfway through the reaction (when half the water is still left), do you think the total numbers of hydrogen and oxygen atoms are the same as at the start?💡 残っている水分子と、できた気体の分子の両方に目を向けましょう。Look at both the water molecules that remain and the gas molecules that have formed.
Try it
Playback starts automatically when the page opens. With "Water molecules n" at 8, watch water molecules approach the electrodes, H₂ (two white balls) form on the Cathode (−) side and O₂ (two red balls) on the Anode (+) side, rise as bubbles, and collect at the top of the tubes.
Press "Pause", then drag the "Progress p" slider to 0%, 50% and 100%. Read the counts for "H₂O left", "H₂ made" and "O₂ made" and the atom table (Before / Now) in the right panel.
Compare the lengths of the two "Gas volume" bars for H₂ and O₂, and compare them with the heights of the gas collected in the tubes.
Change "Water molecules n" to 16 and set "Progress p" to 25% and 100% to see what happens to the atom counts and the volume ratio. You can also change "Speed" and press "Play" to watch the motion again.
Check
With n = 8 and progress 50%, how many were there of H₂O left, H₂ made and O₂ made?→ H₂O H₂O left: 4, H₂ made: 4, O₂ made: 2.
At that moment, what did the atom table show for H and O, Before and Now?→ 反応前も現在も H 16、O 8 で同じだった(「原子は保存 ✓ (2n, n)」)。 Both Before and Now showed H 16 and O 8 ("Atoms conserved ✓ (2n, n)"). It stays the same even at 100% progress.
At which electrode did hydrogen and oxygen each form, and what was the volume ratio?→ 水素は陰極(−)側、酸素は陽極(+)側に発生し、体積比 H₂:O₂ はどの進行度でも 2 : 1 だった(n = 8、100% で H₂ 8 個、O₂ 4 個)。Hydrogen formed on the Cathode (−) side and oxygen on the Anode (+) side, and the volume ratio H₂:O₂ was 2 : 1 at every progress value (at n = 8 and 100%: 8 H₂ and 4 O₂).
With n = 16 and progress 100%, how many H₂ and O₂ formed?→ H₂ が 16 個、O₂ が 8 個できた。 16 H₂ and 8 O₂ formed. The number of H₂ equals the number of water molecules, and the number of O₂ is half of that.
Think further
Why is the volume ratio of hydrogen to oxygen 2:1? Explain using the coefficients in the chemical equation.→ 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂ より、水分子 2 個から H₂ が 2 個、O₂ が 1 個できる。 From 2H₂O → 2H₂ + O₂, 2 water molecules give 2 H₂ and 1 O₂. At the same temperature and pressure, the volume of a gas is proportional to the number of molecules, so the volume ratio is also 2:1.
If the number of water molecules is doubled, what happens to the amount of gas produced and to the volume ratio?→ H₂ も O₂ も 2 倍になるが、体積比は 2:1 のまま変わらない(n = 8 と n = 16 で確かめられる)。Both H₂ and O₂ double, but the volume ratio stays 2:1 (you can check this with n = 8 and n = 16).
Common misconceptions
Hydrogen and oxygen gases are already mixed in the water and electricity just pulls them out" — the water molecules themselves break apart and their atoms rearrange to form new H₂ and O₂ molecules.
Since water is H₂O, hydrogen and oxygen form in a 2:1 ratio by mass" — 2:1 is the ratio by volume (number of molecules), not by mass.

The panel counts are continuous values calculated from n and p, so unless p is a multiple of 25% you will see decimals such as 1.5 (rounding can make the ratio look slightly off). Use 25%, 50%, 75% and 100% for whole numbers. Mention that in real experiments sodium hydroxide or a similar substance is added so current flows easily, and that this model leaves out the electron transfer at the electrodes.
