Gas Exchange in the Alveoli and Tissues
Students understand that gases are exchanged by diffusion from higher to lower concentration — in the alveoli oxygen moves from the alveoli into the blood and carbon dioxide from the blood into the alveoli, and the reverse happens in the tissues — and that this turns venous blood (dark red) into arterial blood (bright red) and back.

Predict (before you touch anything)
As blood flows through the capillaries around the alveoli, do you think it changes from dark red to bright red, or the other way? What about in the body tissues?💡 血液の赤さは、血液中の酸素の多さと関係があります。 How red the blood looks is related to how much oxygen it carries. Think about which has more oxygen: the alveoli or the tissue cells.
During exercise, what do you think happens to the oxygen in the venous blood leaving the tissues?💡 運動中の筋肉などの細胞は、酸素をどのくらい使うでしょうか。How much oxygen do cells such as working muscles use during exercise?
Try it
In the starting state ("Activity level" Rest 20%, "Blood flow speed" ×1.0), compare the left panel "Alveoli (lung capillaries)" with the right panel "Body tissue (tissue capillaries)". Look at labels such as "In: venous blood" and "Out: arterial blood" and watch how the color of the red blood cells changes along the flow.
Check the arrow directions of the blue particles (Oxygen O₂) and purple particles (Carbon dioxide CO₂) on the lung side and on the tissue side (also read the text under each panel, such as "O₂: alveoli → blood CO₂: blood → alveoli").
Move the "Activity level" slider from 0% (Rest) to 100% (Exercise) and record how "Breathing", "Blood flow", "O₂ use", "Arterial O₂" and "Venous O₂" change in the readouts below.
Set "Activity level" back to 20% and compare "Venous O₂" with "Blood flow speed" at ×0.5 and at ×2.0.
Check
How did the blood color change on the lung side and on the tissue side?→ 肺胞側では入口の暗い赤(静脈血)から出口の鮮やかな赤(動脈血)に、組織側では入口の鮮やかな赤(動脈血)から出口の暗い赤(静脈血)に変わった。On the lung side it changed from dark red at the inlet (venous blood) to bright red at the outlet (arterial blood); on the tissue side it changed from bright red at the inlet (arterial blood) to dark red at the outlet (venous blood).
Which way did O₂ and CO₂ move in the alveoli and in the tissues?→ 肺胞では O₂ は肺胞→血液、CO₂ は血液→肺胞。 In the alveoli, O₂ moved alveoli → blood and CO₂ moved blood → alveoli. In the tissues, O₂ moved blood → cells and CO₂ moved cells → blood. In every case the gas moved from higher to lower concentration.
When you moved "Activity level" from Rest (0%) to Exercise (100%), how did the readouts change?→ 呼吸数は約 15 → 40 回/分、血流は ×1.0 → ×2.0、O₂消費は約 38 → 142 に増えた。 Breathing rose from about 15 to 40 /min, blood flow from ×1.0 to ×2.0, and O₂ use from about 38 to 142. Arterial O₂ stayed about 95%, but venous O₂ fell from about 57% to 25%.
Was the blood entering the alveoli arterial blood or venous blood?→ 静脈血(「入口:静脈血」)。 Venous blood ("In: venous blood"). Oxygen-poor blood returning from the body picks up oxygen in the alveoli and leaves as arterial blood.
Think further
Why does venous blood carry less oxygen during exercise, while arterial blood hardly loses any?→ 運動中は細胞が酸素を多く使うので組織の酸素濃度が下がり、濃度差が大きくなって血液からより多くの酸素が拡散する。 During exercise cells use more oxygen, so the oxygen concentration in the tissue drops, the concentration difference grows, and more oxygen diffuses out of the blood. Meanwhile, faster breathing keeps bringing oxygen-rich air into the alveoli, so blood leaving the alveoli is almost fully loaded with oxygen.
Why did venous O₂ go up (to about 64%) when only "Blood flow speed" was raised to ×2.0?→ 血液が速く流れると、1つの赤血球が組織の毛細血管を通る時間が短くなり、その間に拡散で出ていく酸素が少なくなるから。 When blood flows faster, each red blood cell spends less time in the tissue capillaries, so less oxygen diffuses out of it along the way. But because more blood passes through, the total oxygen delivered to the tissue (O₂ use) still increases.
Common misconceptions
Venous blood has no oxygen at all" — venous blood still contains oxygen (about 50% at rest in this model); it just has less.
Arterial blood flows in the artery to the lungs" — blood entering the lungs is venous blood and becomes arterial blood in the alveoli. Artery/vein names refer to the vessel's direction; arterial/venous blood refers to how much oxygen it carries.

Concentrations are normalized from 0 to 1 and the O₂ use value is relative. O₂ and CO₂ particles are drawn moving directly between the capillary and the alveoli or cells; binding to hemoglobin and transport in plasma are left out. It works well to link the fact that venous blood flows in the pulmonary artery to the structure of the heart (pulmonary and systemic circulation).
