Making Water: Conservation of Mass and Fixed Ratio Simulator
Students understand that in the reaction of hydrogen and oxygen to make water (2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O), the total mass before the reaction equals the mass of water made plus the mass of leftover molecules (law of conservation of mass), and that the hydrogen-to-oxygen mass ratio in water is always 1:8 (law of definite proportions).

Predict (before you touch anything)
If 6 hydrogen molecules react with 2 oxygen molecules, how many water molecules do you think will form, and which molecules will be left over, and how many?💡 化学反応式 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O の係数は、1回の反応で使う分子の個数を表しています。The coefficients in 2H₂ + O₂ → 2H₂O tell you how many molecules are used in one reaction.
When one kind of molecule is left over, do you think the total mass after the reaction will be smaller than before, or the same?💡 余った分子が容器の中からどこかへ消えるかどうかを考えてみましょう。Think about whether the leftover molecules actually disappear from the container.
Try it
In the starting state (Hydrogen H₂: 6, Oxygen O₂: 2), press "Start reaction". Watch two H₂ (two white balls each) move to one red O₂ and turn into two water molecules (white-red-white), and look for the molecules labeled "extra" at the end.
In the right panel, read "Total mass before", "Mass of water made" and "Mass left over", and check the equation in the green box (for example 76 g = 72 g + 4 g) and "✓ Equal (law of conservation of mass)". Also compare the heights of the "Before" and "After" bars in the stacked bar graph.
Move the "Hydrogen H₂" slider to 12 (keep oxygen at 2), press "Start reaction" again, and see how the number of water molecules and the leftovers change.
Now set H₂ to 4 and the "Oxygen O₂" slider to 4, run the reaction, and find out which one is left over.
Try several combinations and record the "Mass ratio H : O in water" each time.
Check
With 6 H₂ and 2 O₂, how many water molecules formed and what was left over? What were the mass values?→ 水が 4 個でき、水素分子が 2 個余った(酸素が尽きて反応が止まった)。 4 water molecules formed and 2 hydrogen molecules were left over (the oxygen ran out, so the reaction stopped). Before 76 g = water 72 g + leftover 4 g, so they were equal.
When you increased H₂ to 12, did the number of water molecules increase?→ 増えなかった。 (88 g = 72 g + 16 g)。No. Because there are only 2 O₂, still only 4 water molecules formed and 8 hydrogen molecules were left over (88 g = 72 g + 16 g).
With 4 H₂ and 4 O₂, which was left over, and how much?→ 水素が先に尽き、酸素分子が 2 個(64 g)余った。 The hydrogen ran out first and 2 oxygen molecules (64 g) were left over. 4 water molecules (72 g) formed, and 136 g = 72 g + 64 g.
Did the H : O mass ratio in the water change when you changed the sliders?→ 変わらなかった。 No. For every combination it was always 1 : 8 (one water: H 2g : O 16g).
Think further
Why is the H : O mass ratio in water always 1 : 8?→ 水分子は必ず水素原子2個と酸素原子1個からできていて、原子1個の質量が決まっている(H=1、O=16)ので、1分子の中は 2 : 16 = 1 : 8 になる。 Every water molecule is always made of 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom, and each atom has a fixed mass (H = 1, O = 16), so one molecule is 2 : 16 = 1 : 8. However many molecules there are, the ratio stays the same.
In an experiment, 4 g of hydrogen reacts with 40 g of oxygen. Using the idea from the simulation, how many grams of water form, and how much gas is left over?→ 水素:酸素 = 1:8 で結びつくので、水素 4 g には酸素 32 g が必要。 Hydrogen and oxygen combine in a 1:8 mass ratio, so 4 g of hydrogen needs 32 g of oxygen. 36 g of water forms and 8 g of oxygen is left over (4 + 40 = 36 + 8, so mass is conserved).
Common misconceptions
The substance you have more of is also used up completely" — in fact the reaction stops when the smaller one runs out, and the excess simply remains.
Mass decreases in a reaction (or leftovers don't count)" — when the leftover molecules are included, the total mass is the same before and after.

This model idealizes the molecular masses from atomic masses H = 1, O = 16 (H₂ = 2, O₂ = 32, H₂O = 18) as the mass in grams of one molecule, and O₂ is drawn as a single red ball for clarity (a real O₂ has two oxygen atoms). Point out that real experiments measure the 1:8 ratio by mass, and keep students from confusing it with the 2:1 volume ratio of the gases.
