Moon Phases and Solar & Lunar Eclipses

中3 · 地学単元: 月の満ち欠けと日食・月食Moon Phases and Solar & Lunar Eclipses 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that the Moon's phases come from seeing the sunlit half of the Moon from changing angles (not from Earth's shadow), that solar eclipses happen only at new moon and lunar eclipses only at full moon when the Sun, Earth and Moon line up, and that the tilt of the Moon's orbit is why eclipses do not happen every month.

Predict (before you touch anything)

What do you think causes the Moon to look partly dark (its phases)?💡 月はいつも半分が太陽に照らされています。 Half of the Moon is always lit by the Sun. Pay attention to the direction from which we on Earth are looking at that lit half.
New moon and full moon happen every month. Why do you think solar and lunar eclipses do not happen every month?💡 月が回る道(白道)と、地球が太陽のまわりを回る面(黄道面)が同じ平面にあるかどうかを考えましょう。Think about whether the Moon's path (its orbit) lies in the same plane as Earth's orbit around the Sun (the ecliptic).

Try it

Press "⏸ Pause" and set "② Tilt of the Moon's orbit" to 0.0°. Move "① Moon phase t" through 0 → 3.8 → 7.4 → 14.8 → 22.1 days and record the shape and name in "② The Moon seen from Earth" and which way the Moon's bright side faces in the "① Top view".
While changing the phase, check whether the markings (craters) on the Moon in "② The Moon seen from Earth" rotate or change, and read the line at the bottom of the screen for when and in which direction each Moon is seen.
Keeping the tilt at 0.0°, move t slowly around 14.6 → 14.75 → 14.9 days (select the slider and use the arrow keys for fine steps). Watch the "③ Eclipse cross-section", the Moon's color and the bottom line (penumbral, partial, total lunar eclipse).
Set t = 0 days (new moon) and look at how much of the Earth the Moon's umbra covers in the cross-section.
Increase "② Tilt of the Moon's orbit" to 0.5° → 1.5° → 5.1° and check what happens to eclipses at t = 0 days and t ≈ 14.75 days. Also find the ascending and descending nodes (▲▼) in the top view.

Check

Over the roughly 29.5 days starting from new moon, in what order did the Moon's shape change? Which side was lit at first quarter and at third quarter?→ 新月(0 日)→三日月(約 3.8 日)→上弦の月(約 7.4 日)→満月(約 14.8 日)→下弦の月(約 22.1 日)→新月の順。 New moon (day 0) → crescent (about day 3.8) → first quarter (about day 7.4) → full moon (about day 14.8) → third quarter (about day 22.1) → back to new moon. At first quarter the right half was lit, and at third quarter the left half.
In the top view, which way did the Moon's bright half always face? Did the markings on the Moon seen from Earth change?→ 明るい半分はどの位置でもいつも太陽(左)の方を向いていた。 The bright half always faced the Sun (to the left), wherever the Moon was. The markings seen from Earth neither rotated nor changed, so the same side always faced Earth (because the Moon spins once per orbit).
With the tilt at 0°, when and how were the lunar and solar eclipses shown?→ 月食は満月のときだけで、t ≈ 14.75 日で月全体が地球の本影に入り赤銅色の皆既月食になり、その前後では部分月食(約 76 % が本影)、半影月食と変わった。 Lunar eclipses appeared only at full moon: at t ≈ 14.75 days the whole Moon was in Earth's umbra and turned copper-red (total lunar eclipse), and just before and after it became a partial eclipse (about 76 % in the umbra) and then a penumbral eclipse. The solar eclipse appeared at new moon (around t = 0), and the Moon's umbra fell on only a very narrow strip of Earth's surface.
When you increased the tilt of the Moon's orbit, what happened to eclipses at new moon and full moon?→ 傾き 0.5° では満月で部分月食(約 36 %)、1.5° では月食も皆既日食も起こらず部分日食だけ、5.1° では新月・満月とも三体が一直線に並ばず、影がすれ違って食は起こらなかった。At 0.5° the full moon gave only a partial lunar eclipse (about 36 %); at 1.5° there was no lunar eclipse and no total solar eclipse, only a partial solar eclipse; at 5.1° the three bodies did not line up at either new or full moon, the shadows missed, and no eclipse happened.

Think further

Using what you saw in the simulation, explain why the phases cannot be caused by Earth's shadow.→ 上弦の月や三日月のとき、月は太陽-地球を結ぶ線から大きく離れていて、地球の影は月にまったくかかっていない。 At crescent or first quarter, the Moon is far from the Sun-Earth line and Earth's shadow does not touch it at all. It looks partly dark because we see the sunlit half from the side. Earth's shadow (umbra) only falls on the Moon for a short time at full moon, and then it shows up as a lunar eclipse with a dim copper-red Moon.
Why can a total lunar eclipse be seen at the same time from anywhere the Moon is up, while a total solar eclipse can be seen only from a very small area?→ 月食は月そのものが地球の影に入って暗くなるので、月が見える夜の側ならどこからでも同じように見える。 In a lunar eclipse the Moon itself goes into Earth's shadow, so everyone on the night side who can see the Moon sees it the same way. In a solar eclipse the small umbra of the Moon falls on Earth and only reaches a very narrow strip of the surface, so only people inside that strip see a total eclipse.

The top view exaggerates sizes, distances and tilt (the cross-section is to scale only vertically, within 2 Earth radii). The model fixes the nodes (where the Moon's orbit crosses the ecliptic) at the first- and third-quarter positions, so at tilts of about 1.5° or more no eclipse ever happens. Explain that the real tilt is about 5.1° and eclipses occur only when the nodes line up with the Sun, in the "eclipse seasons" about twice a year. The eclipse window is very short, so have students find it with Play (which slows down automatically during eclipses) or the arrow keys.
