Induced Charge! See Electrons Move in an Electroscope
Students understand, by following the electrons, that bringing a charged rod near an electroscope makes only the electrons in the metal move (attracted or repelled) — electrostatic induction — and that by using grounding the whole electroscope can be charged with the opposite sign to the rod.
Open the simulation
Predict (before you touch anything)
If you bring a negatively charged rod near the electroscope's disc (without touching it), do you think the leaves will open? If they do, what kind of charge will the leaves have?💡 金属の中で自由に動けるのは何か、そしてそれが負の電気からどんな力を受けるかを考えましょう。Think about what can move freely inside a metal, and what force it feels from a negative charge.
If you touch the electroscope with your hand while the rod is near, then remove your hand, and then take the rod away, what do you think the leaves will do at the end?💡 手でさわっている間、電子は人体を通ってどこへ行き来できるでしょうか。 While your hand touches it, where can electrons go to or come from through your body? After you let go, can their number go back to what it was?
Try it
In the starting state ("Rod charge" −6, "Rod–disc distance" 3.0 cm), watch the negative rod come near. Observe the blue electrons moving disc → metal rod → leaves, the leaf angle, and the "Disc", "Leaves" and "Whole electroscope" values in the panel.
Move "Rod–disc distance" to 1.0 cm and then 8.0 cm and compare how the leaf angle changes. Then set it back to 3.0 cm.
Press "Hand (ground): OFF" to turn it ON, and watch the arrows showing electrons flowing leaves → metal rod → hand → body → ground, and what happens to the leaves.
Press it again to return to "Hand (ground): OFF" (③ Hand off), then press "Move rod away" (④ Take away), and check the leaf angle and the "Whole electroscope" value.
Press "Reset", set "Rod charge" to +6, press "Bring rod near", and repeat the same sequence (hand ON → hand OFF → move rod away). Confirm that the electrons move in the opposite direction to the negative-rod case. You can also replay the whole sequence with "Auto demo ①→④".
Check
With the negative rod (−6) at 3.0 cm, what charge did the disc and the leaves have, and about how far did the leaves open?→ 電子が箔の方へ押しやられ、円板は約 +2.9(電子不足)、箔は約 −2.9(電子過剰)に帯電し、箔は約 29° 開いた。 Electrons were pushed toward the leaves: the disc became about +2.9 (too few electrons) and the leaves about −2.9 (extra electrons), opening to about 29°. The whole electroscope stayed at 0.0.
How did the leaf angle differ at a rod–disc distance of 1.0 cm and 8.0 cm?→ 1.0 cm About 36° at 1.0 cm and about 9° at 8.0 cm: the closer the rod, the more electrons moved and the wider the leaves opened.
With the negative rod near, when you turned the hand (ground) ON, which way did the electrons flow and what happened to the leaves?→ 電子は箔→金属棒→手→人体→大地へ流れ出て、箔の電荷は 0 になって閉じた。 Electrons flowed out leaves → metal rod → hand → body → ground, the leaf charge became 0 and the leaves closed. About +5.7 remained on the disc, so the whole electroscope became positive.
After removing the hand and then taking the negative rod away, what did the leaves do? What happened when you did the same with the positive rod (+6)?→ 負の棒では検電器全体が +6.0 のまま残り、箔は+に帯電して約 30° 開き続けた。 With the negative rod the whole electroscope stayed at +6.0 and the leaves stayed open at about 30° with positive charge. With the positive rod, electrons flowed in from the ground while grounded, and at the end the electroscope was −6.0 with the leaves open about 30° with negative charge. In both cases the charge was opposite to the rod's.
Think further
In this simulation the positive charges (+) never move; only electrons move. Why can the disc still become positively charged?→ 金属の中ではもともと電子と正の電荷が同じ数あって中性である。 In a neutral metal there are equal numbers of electrons and positive charges. When electrons move away from a region, that region is left with more positive charges than electrons, so it is positively charged overall.
If you bring the rod near without grounding and then simply take it away, what will the leaves do in the end? Check it in the simulation.→ 箔は閉じる。 The leaves close. No electrons entered or left the electroscope, so its total charge is still 0, and once the rod's influence is gone the electrons spread back to where they were.
Common misconceptions
Both positive and negative charges move in a metal." Only electrons move in a metal; positive charges stay fixed. A region becomes positive because it has lost electrons.
The leaves open because charge jumped from the rod to the electroscope." The rod never touches the electroscope; the rod's charge only pushes or pulls the electrons already inside it.

Charge values are schematic numbers in units of "number of electrons"; real electroscopes involve vastly more electrons. The leaf angle is simply made proportional to the leaf charge, and the hand is drawn touching the metal rod rather than the disc. Stress that the hand must be removed before the rod is taken away.
