Transformer Mystery: Changing Voltage with Magnetic Flux in an Iron Core

Transformer Mystery: Changing Voltage with Magnetic Flux in an Iron Core 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that in a transformer the alternating current in the primary coil makes the magnetic flux in the iron core change periodically, and this change induces a voltage in the secondary coil, so the secondary voltage equals primary voltage × secondary turns ÷ primary turns and depends only on the turns ratio.

Predict (before you touch anything)

The primary and secondary coils are not connected by any wire. Why do you think the bulb connected to the secondary coil can still light up?💡 コイルの中の磁界が変化するとき、コイルに何が起こるかを思い出しましょう(電磁誘導)。Recall what happens in a coil when the magnetic field inside it changes (electromagnetic induction).
If the secondary coil has more turns than the primary coil (100 turns), do you think the secondary voltage will be larger or smaller than the primary voltage? Will changing the frequency change the voltage ratio?💡 同じ磁束の変化が、巻数の多いコイルと少ないコイルを貫くとどう違うか考えてみましょう。Think about how the same change in flux affects a coil with many turns compared with a coil with few turns.

Try it

In the starting state ("Primary voltage V₁" 5.0 V, "Secondary turns N₂" 200 turns, "Frequency f" 50 Hz, display speed "1/8 slow"), check that the light-blue flux arrows circulating in the iron core reverse direction periodically, and that the primary and secondary coils are not joined by any wire.
Change the display-speed menu to "1/40 slow" and watch that each time the white vertical line (current time) on the oscilloscope passes a point where the voltage waves cross 0, the current arrows on the coils and wires, and the "Primary" and "Secondary" round arrows in the core window, reverse.
Set "Secondary turns N₂" to 50 turns and compare "Secondary V₂" and "Turns ratio" in the readout panel, and the amplitudes of the blue (secondary) and orange (primary) waves. Then set it to 500 turns, compare again, and watch how the bulb's brightness changes.
Keeping "Secondary turns N₂" at 500 turns, set "Primary voltage V₁" to 2.0 V and check by calculation that the secondary voltage matches the formula V₁ × N₂ ÷ N₁.
Move "Frequency f" from 20 Hz to 120 Hz and confirm that the number of cycles in the 100 ms window changes, but "Secondary V₂" and "Turns ratio" do not.

Check

With a primary voltage of 5.0 V and 50 secondary turns, what were the secondary voltage and turns ratio, and was it step-up or step-down?→ 二次電圧 2.5 V、巻数比 0.50 で「降圧」と表示された。 Secondary voltage 2.5 V and turns ratio 0.50, shown as "Step-down". The blue wave's amplitude was half of the orange one.
With a primary voltage of 2.0 V and 500 secondary turns, what was the secondary voltage? Did it match the formula?→ 10.0 V(巻数比 5.00、「昇圧」)。 10.0 V (turns ratio 5.00, "Step-up"). 2.0 V × 500 ÷ 100 = 10 V, which matches the formula.
When you raised the frequency from 50 Hz to 120 Hz, how did the waves and the numbers change?→ 100 ms The number of cycles in 100 ms rose from 5 to 12 (the period got shorter), but the secondary voltage and turns ratio stayed the same.
Did the primary and secondary voltage waves reach their peaks and troughs at the same times?→ そろっていた。 Yes. Both are sine waves with the same period and cross zero at the same moments; only their amplitudes differ.

Think further

If a steady direct current (constant direction and size) were connected to the transformer instead of AC, would a voltage appear in the secondary coil? No (except at the moment the current is switched on or off). An induced voltage appears only while the magnetic field is changing, so constant flux induces nothing in the secondary coil. That is why transformers are used with AC.
Electricity from power stations is stepped up to a very high voltage before transmission. Which kind of setting in this simulation does such a transformer correspond to?→ 二次巻数が一次巻数より多い「昇圧」の変圧器に相当する。 It corresponds to a "step-up" transformer whose secondary has more turns than the primary. Near homes, "step-down" transformers with fewer secondary turns lower the voltage again.

The model is an ideal, loss-free transformer; voltages are shown as amplitudes, and the secondary voltage is V₁ × N₂ ÷ N₁ regardless of the bulb's load. The number of drawn turns is schematic. The flux curve (dashed) is shifted a quarter cycle from the voltage; at lower-secondary level, focus on "a changing field induces a voltage" and treat the Lenz's-law round arrows as an extension.
