Combustion of Methane: Molecule Model

Students understand that the combustion of methane (CH₄ + 2O₂ → CO₂ + 2H₂O) only rearranges atoms, so the kinds and numbers of atoms stay the same before and after the reaction, and that the reaction always proceeds in the fixed ratio of 1 CH₄ to 2 O₂.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If 2 CH₄ and 5 O₂ molecules react, do you think any molecules will be left over? If so, which kind and how many?💡 化学反応式の係数を見て、CH₄ 1個と反応する O₂ の数を考えましょう。Look at the coefficients in the chemical equation and think about how many O₂ react with one CH₄.
Between before and after the reaction, do you think the number of C, H and O atoms increases, decreases, or stays the same?💡 化学変化で原子そのものが別の原子に変わることがあるか考えてみましょう。Think about whether an atom itself can turn into a different kind of atom in a chemical change.

Try it

In the starting state ("CH₄ molecules" 2, "O₂ molecules" 5), look at the molecules in "Before (reactants)". Check the color and size of C (dark, large), O (red, medium) and H (white, small), and read how many sets can react in the status line below.
Press "Start reaction" and watch the atoms rearrange into CO₂ and H₂O in "After (products)". If it is too fast, lower the "Speed" slider to about 0.5×, press "Reset", then "Start reaction" again.
When the reaction ends, compare the C, H and O counts for "Before" and "After (products + leftovers)" in the "Atom count" bars at the bottom, and confirm the "Equal ✓" message.
Set "CH₄ molecules" to 3 and "O₂ molecules" to 4, press "Start reaction", and check the leftover molecules circled with dashed lines and the number of sets and leftovers in the status line.
Set "CH₄ molecules" to 4 and "O₂ molecules" to 8, run the reaction, and confirm that nothing is left over. Then find other combinations that leave no leftovers.

Check

With 2 CH₄ and 5 O₂, how many sets reacted, what was produced, and what was left over?→ 2組が反応し、CO₂ が 2個と H₂O が 4個できた。 2 sets reacted, producing 2 CO₂ and 4 H₂O. One O₂ was left over (it stays in place, circled with a dashed line).
With 2 CH₄ and 5 O₂, how many C, H and O atoms were there before and after the reaction?→ 反応前も反応後も C が 2個、H が 8個、O が 10個で一致し、「一致 ✓」と表示された。Both before and after: C = 2, H = 8, O = 10. They matched and the screen showed "Equal ✓".
With 3 CH₄ and 4 O₂, how many sets reacted and what was left over?→ O₂ が 4個しかないので 2組だけが反応し、CH₄ が 1個余った(O₂ の余りは 0個)。Because there are only 4 O₂, just 2 sets reacted and 1 CH₄ was left over (0 O₂ left).
Which atoms, and how many of each, make up one CO₂ molecule and one H₂O molecule?→ CO₂ は C 1個と O 2個、H₂O は O 1個と H 2個でできている。CO₂ is made of 1 C and 2 O atoms; H₂O is made of 1 O and 2 H atoms.

Think further

Why does the total mass of substances not change before and after a chemical reaction? Explain using this model.→ 化学変化では原子の組み合わせが変わるだけで、原子がなくなったり新しく生まれたりしない。 A chemical change only rearranges how atoms are combined; no atoms disappear or appear. Since the kinds and numbers of atoms stay the same, the sum of their masses stays the same too (the law of conservation of mass).
If there are 3 CH₄, what is the minimum number of O₂ needed to burn all the methane, and how many CO₂ and H₂O are produced?→ CH₄ 1個に O₂ 2個が必要なので O₂ は 6個。 Each CH₄ needs 2 O₂, so 6 O₂ are needed. It produces 3 CO₂ and 6 H₂O (you can confirm this by setting CH₄ to 3 and O₂ to 6).

This model shows conservation of atom counts and the reacting ratio; it does not show the flame, heat release, or the real shapes, sizes and bond angles of molecules (H₂O is drawn schematically). Mass is not displayed directly, so guide students from "same atoms" to "same mass" in discussion. Unreacted molecules are marked with dashed circles.
