Predict (before you touch anything)
If the upper deflection plate is made + and the lower one −, do you think the electron beam will bend up or down?💡 電子がもっている電気は+と−のどちらでしょうか。 Is the charge on an electron + or −? And how do like charges and unlike charges act on each other?
If you raise the accelerating voltage so the electrons go faster, do you think they will bend differently for the same plate voltage?💡 電子が偏向板の間を通りぬけるのにかかる時間に注目しましょう。Think about how long each electron spends passing between the plates.
Try it
With the starting settings (Accel. voltage 1.5 kV, Plate voltage 0 V, "Show: electron flow"), watch the glowing electrons travel from Cathode K (−) through the hole in Anode A (+) and note where they hit the Screen.
Set "Plate voltage" to +300 V and read the + / − signs on the plates, the direction the beam bends, and the "Deflection" value. Then set it to −300 V and compare.
Keeping "Plate voltage" at +300 V, change "Accel. voltage" to 0.5 kV and then 3.0 kV, recording "Speed" and "Deflection". Then, at 1.5 kV, set the plate voltage to +150 V and compare the deflection.
Press the "Show: electron flow" button to switch to "Show: conventional current", and check how the arrows in the tube and the label below change.
Check
With the plate voltage at 0 V, how did the electrons travel?→ 陰極(−)から出て陽極(+)に向かって速くなり、陽極の穴を通りぬけて真っすぐ進み、蛍光幕の中央を光らせた。 They left the cathode (−), sped up toward the anode (+), passed through its hole, went straight, and lit up the center of the screen. Deflection showed "none".
Which way did the beam bend at +300 V and at −300 V?→ +300 V At +300 V the upper plate was + and the beam bent up (up 28%). At −300 V the lower plate was + and it bent down (down 28%). Either way it bends toward the + plate.
At a plate voltage of +300 V, what happened to the speed and the deflection at 0.5 kV, 1.5 kV, and 3.0 kV?→ 電子の速さは 1.00倍、1.73倍、2.45倍と速くなり、偏向量は上へ 85%、28%、14% と小さくなった。 The speed rose to 1.00×, 1.73×, and 2.45×, while the deflection fell to up 85%, 28%, and 14%. Faster electrons bend less.
When you switched to "Show: conventional current", which way did the arrows point?→ 電子が進む向き(陰極→陽極、−→+)とは逆の、陽極から陰極(+→−)の向きになった。 They pointed from the anode to the cathode (+ → −), opposite to the electrons' motion (cathode → anode, − → +). The electrons themselves kept moving the same way.
Think further
What does the fact that the cathode ray bends toward the + plate tell us about what a cathode ray is?→ +に引かれるので、陰極線は−の電気をもった粒子(電子)の流れだとわかる。 Because it is pulled toward +, a cathode ray must be a stream of negatively charged particles (electrons). Something without charge, such as light, would not bend when the voltage is applied.
Current is defined as flowing from + to −, yet electrons actually move from − to +. Why is there this mismatch?→ 電流の向きは電子が発見されるより前に「+から−へ流れる」と約束されたため。 The direction of current was agreed on as + to − before electrons were discovered. Later it turned out that current is carried by negatively charged electrons, but the original convention was kept.
Common misconceptions
Current flows the same way the electrons move." In wires and in a cathode ray tube, electrons move from − to +, opposite to the conventional current.
Raising any voltage makes the electrons bend more." Only the plate voltage increases the bending; raising the accelerating voltage makes the electrons faster, so they actually bend less.

The model makes electron speed proportional to the square root of the accelerating voltage and the deflection proportional to plate voltage ÷ accelerating voltage (85% of the half screen height at 0.5 kV and 300 V). At lower-secondary level, skip the formulas and use the qualitative idea that faster electrons bend less. The rise of "Hits" with accelerating voltage is a display choice; in a real tube the number of electrons depends on things like cathode heating. The layout differs from the Crookes tubes (with a cross or slit) in textbooks, so compare it with photos of real tubes.
