Rotating-Coil Generator (Bicycle Dynamo)
Students understand that rotating a coil in a magnetic field keeps increasing and decreasing the number of field lines through it, which produces an induced current that keeps reversing direction (alternating current), and that its size depends on the field strength, the rotation speed, and the number of turns.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Which do you think gives the larger induced current: the instant the coil faces the field head-on (the most field lines pass through it), or the instant the coil is parallel to the field (no lines pass through)?💡 誘導電流は、磁力線の「数」と「数の変わる速さ」のどちらで決まるのでしたか。Is induced current set by the number of field lines, or by how fast that number is changing?
If you halve the rotation speed, how do you think the waveform on the oscilloscope will change?💡 1回転にかかる時間と、磁力線の数が変わる速さの両方を考えてみましょう。Think about both the time for one turn and how fast the number of field lines changes.
Try it
With the starting settings (① Speed 200 rpm, ② Field strength 6 lines, ③ Coil turns 4), compare the spinning coil with the green line (Current I) and the yellow dashed line (Flux Φ) on the oscilloscope.
Press "⏸ Pause" several times, and each time read θ, "Lines through coil", and I∝sinθ at the lower left, plus the direction of the red arrows on the coil's two vertical sides. Press "▶ Play" to continue.
Set ① Speed to 100 rpm and read how the spacing between wave peaks (1 div = 0.25 s) and the "Peak" value in the legend change.
Set ① Speed back to 200 rpm, then change ③ Coil turns to 2, and then change ② Field strength, checking how the "Peak" value and the bulb's brightness change.
Check
When θ was near 0° or 180° (coil ⊥ field), what were the lines through the coil and the current I doing?→ 磁力線は6本すべてがコイルを通りぬけ(Φ が最大)、I∝sinθ はほぼ 0 で、赤矢印は消え電球も暗かった。 All 6 lines passed through the coil (Φ at its maximum), I∝sinθ was nearly 0, the red arrows vanished, and the bulb was dark. The oscilloscope shows "Coil ⊥ field: Φ max → I ≈ 0".
When the current is at its maximum, what is the yellow dashed line (flux) doing?→ 磁束が 0 を横切り、いちばん速く変化しているとき(θ = 90°, 270°、面∥磁界)。 When the flux crosses 0 and is changing fastest (θ = 90° or 270°, coil ∥ field). The green current wave is shifted by a quarter cycle from the yellow flux wave.
How were the red arrows on the coil's two vertical sides related? What happens after half a turn?→ 2本の辺の矢印はいつも逆向き(一方が上向きなら他方は下向き)で、コイルを一周する電流になっている。 The two sides always point opposite ways (one up, the other down), so the current goes around the coil. Every half turn both arrows reverse, and so do the arrows in the outer circuit. This is alternating current.
What happened to the "Peak" value when you lowered the speed from 200 rpm to 100 rpm, and when you lowered the turns from 4 to 2?→ どちらも約2.0 V から約1.0 V に半分になった。 Both halved the peak, from about 2.0 V to about 1.0 V. Lowering the speed also stretched the wave period from about 0.3 s (about 1.2 div) to about 0.6 s (about 2.4 div).
Think further
Why is a bicycle dynamo light dim when you pedal slowly and bright when you pedal fast?→ 速くこぐとコイル(または磁石)の回転が速くなり、コイルを通る磁力線の数が変わる速さが大きくなるので、誘導電流(電圧)が大きくなるから。 Pedaling faster spins the coil (or magnet) faster, so the number of field lines through the coil changes faster, which makes the induced current (voltage) larger. The number of direction reversals per second (frequency) also increases.
Common misconceptions
The current is largest when the most field lines pass through the coil." Current depends on how fast the number of lines changes; at the instant of maximum flux the change stops, so the current is 0.
Changing the speed only changes the spacing of the waves." Spinning faster shortens the period and also increases the amplitude (peak).

The model makes the peak voltage proportional to field strength × speed × turns, reaching 6 V at the maximum settings (8 lines, 300 rpm, 6 turns). Current and voltage are drawn as the same waveform, and the bulb's resistance and the braking load on the rotation are ignored. Most real bicycle dynamos spin the magnet rather than the coil; this model spins the coil. At lower-secondary level, "magnetic flux" can be described as "the number of field lines passing through the coil".
