How Far During the Preliminary Tremor? Aftershock Pulse Battle
Students understand that P waves and S waves leave the hypocenter at the same time but travel at different speeds, so they reach a station at different times, and that this gap (the duration of preliminary tremor) grows in proportion to the hypocentral distance.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When an earthquake happens, a station feels small shaking first and strong shaking later. At a station farther from the hypocenter, what do you think happens to how long the small shaking lasts?💡 速い走者と遅い走者が同時にスタートしたとき、ゴールまでの距離が長いほど到着の差はどうなるでしょうか。If a fast runner and a slow runner start together, how does the gap between their finishing times change as the race gets longer?
Try it
With the starting settings (Distance d 100 km, P-wave Vp 7.0 km/s, Time zoom x1.0), read the S-wave speed Vs, the duration of preliminary tremor Δt, and the "Predicted: P arrives" and "S arrives" values in the data panel. Press the "Speed x1" button twice to get "Speed x4".
Press "Reset" to replay and watch the yellow P wavefront and the red S wavefront approach the station, with the "… km to go" labels on the fronts. Observe how the badge beside the house (Still quiet / Preliminary tremor: weak / Main shaking: strong) and the seismogram at the bottom change when P and S arrive.
Press "Pause", then set "Distance d" to 50 km and to 200 km, recording Δt each time.
Set "Distance d" back to 100 km and "P-wave Vp" to 5.0 km/s, and read how Vs, Δt and the P and S arrival times change. If you like, set "Time zoom" to x4.0 to stretch out the seismogram.
Check
In the starting settings (d = 100 km, Vp = 7.0 km/s), how many seconds after the quake did the P wave and the S wave reach the station? What is the duration of preliminary tremor?→ P波は約14.3秒後、S波は約24.7秒後に着き、初期微動継続時間は 24.7 − 14.3 = 約10.5秒(Vs は約4.04 km/s)。The P wave arrived at about 14.3 s and the S wave at about 24.7 s, so the duration of preliminary tremor is 24.7 − 14.3 ≈ 10.5 s (Vs is about 4.04 km/s).
How did the seismogram differ before the P arrival, between the P and S arrivals, and after the S arrival?→ P到達前は平らな線(まだ静か)、PからSまでは振れ幅の小さい細かい青い波(初期微動)、S到達後は振れ幅の大きい赤い波(主要動)になった。Before P the line was flat (still quiet), from P to S it showed small, fast blue wiggles (preliminary tremor), and after S it showed large red swings (main shaking).
What was the duration of preliminary tremor at 50 km, 100 km, and 200 km? What is the relationship?→ 約5.2秒、約10.5秒、約20.9秒。 About 5.2 s, 10.5 s, and 20.9 s. Doubling the distance roughly doubles the duration, so it is proportional to the hypocentral distance.
When you set Vp to 5.0 km/s, what happened to Vs and the duration of preliminary tremor?→ Vs Vs dropped to about 2.89 km/s, P arrived at about 20.0 s and S at about 34.6 s, and the duration grew to about 14.6 s. Slower ground makes the gap larger.
Think further
A station recorded a duration of preliminary tremor of about 15.7 s. If the ground has the starting speeds (Vp 7.0 km/s), roughly how far away is the hypocenter? Check it in the simulation.→ 100 km At 100 km it is about 10.5 s, and 15.7 s is about 1.5 times that, so about 150 km. Setting d to 150 km shows Δt ≈ 15.7 s.
An earthquake early warning detects the P wave and warns that strong shaking (the S wave) is coming. Why is the warning less likely to arrive in time close to the hypocenter?→ 震源に近いほどP波とS波の到着の差(初期微動継続時間)が短く、d = 10 km では1秒ほどしかないため、知らせる前にS波が来てしまうから。Near the hypocenter the gap between the P and S arrivals is short (only about 1 s at d = 10 km), so the S wave arrives before the warning can be delivered.
Common misconceptions
The small shaking (P wave) happens first, and the strong shaking (S wave) is a separate event later." Both waves leave the same hypocenter at the same moment; they arrive at different times only because their speeds differ.
The duration of preliminary tremor depends on how big the earthquake is." It depends mainly on the distance from the hypocenter and is proportional to it.

The model fixes Vs = Vp ÷ 1.732, so at Vp 7.0 km/s Vs is about 4.04 km/s and Δt at d = 100 km is about 10.5 s (as the on-screen note says, this does not match the "about 7.4 s" in the original task). The focal depth is fixed at 0.25 × the hypocentral distance, and the ground is assumed uniform with waves travelling in straight lines. The seismogram is a schematic signal to show the arrival structure, not a real earthquake record.
