Electromagnet Field and Compasses
Students understand that a current-carrying coil (electromagnet) produces a magnetic field like a bar magnet's, that its direction is set by the direction of the current, and that it becomes stronger with more current, more turns, and an iron core.
Open the simulation
Predict (before you touch anything)
If you reverse the direction of the current in the coil, what do you think happens to the coil's N and S poles?💡 右ねじの法則では、電流の向きと磁界の向きはどのような関係でしたか。In the right-hand screw rule, how are the direction of the current and the direction of the magnetic field related?
What do you think happens to the strength of the magnetic field when you put an iron core inside the coil?💡 鉄は磁石に引きつけられ、自分も磁石になることがある物質です。Iron is a material that is attracted to magnets and can itself become magnetized.
Try it
With the starting settings (Current 1.50 A, Number of coil turns 10, Iron core checked), look at the shape of the field lines and where the red needles (N pole) of the 13 compasses point. Compare the field direction inside and outside the coil.
Press "Reverse current" and check how the × and • marks on the wire cross-sections, the N/S labels at the coil ends, and the compass needles change.
Uncheck "Iron core" and read how "Field strength (rel.)" and the number of "Field lines" at the top change. Then press "Reverse current" and compare how quickly the compass needles settle with how they settled with the iron core.
Check "Iron core" again, set "Current" to 3.00 A and "Number of coil turns" to 20, and look at how crowded the field lines are. Finally set "Current" to 0.00 A and see what happens to the field lines and the N/S labels.
Check
In the starting settings, which way did the compasses inside the coil point? How does that compare with the compasses outside the coil (above and below)?→ コイルの中の3個はすべて右(S極側からN極側)を向いて平行にそろっていた。 The three compasses inside all pointed right (from the S end toward the N end), parallel to each other. The outside compasses follow the curved field lines that leave the N end and return to the S end, so directly above and below the coil they point roughly left.
What swapped when you pressed "Reverse current"?→ 上の導線が・から×に、下の導線が×から・に変わり、N極が右から左に移った。 The top wires changed from • to × and the bottom wires from × to •, and the N pole moved from the right end to the left end. Every compass swung around and lined up with the new field direction.
What happened to "Field strength (rel.)" and the number of field lines when you removed the iron core?→ 磁界の強さは 0.75 から 0.25(3分の1)に、磁力線は 6本から 2本に減った。 Field strength dropped from 0.75 to 0.25 (one third) and the field lines from 6 to 2. After reversing the current without the core, the needles swung slowly and took longer to settle.
Compare the display at 3.00 A, 20 turns, iron core with the display at 0.00 A.→ 3.00 A・20回では磁界の強さ 3.00、磁力線 24本でとても密になった。 At 3.00 A and 20 turns, field strength was 3.00 with 24 field lines, very crowded. At 0.00 A the field lines dropped to 0 and disappeared, and "Current 0: no magnetic field" was shown instead of N/S.
Think further
Motors and electromagnet cranes sometimes use electromagnets instead of permanent magnets. Using what you saw in the simulation, explain what makes electromagnets useful.→ 電流を切れば磁界をなくせる、電流の向きを変えればN極とS極を入れかえられる、電流・巻き数・鉄心で強さを調節できる、という点。 You can switch the field off by stopping the current, swap N and S by reversing the current, and adjust the strength with the current, the turns, and an iron core. A crane releases iron by cutting the current, and a motor keeps turning by switching the current direction.
Common misconceptions
Field lines start at N and end at S." Inside the coil the lines run from the S end to the N end, so each field line is a closed loop with no ends.
A coil's poles depend only on how it is wound, not on the current." Reversing the current in the same coil swaps its N and S poles.

In this model "Field strength (rel.)" is proportional to the current and the number of turns, and the iron core simply multiplies it by 3 (a real iron core can strengthen the field much more, and it saturates in strong fields). Earth's magnetic field is not included, so at 0 A the compasses do not turn north; they stay where they were. The cross-section is a 2D calculation that treats the top and bottom rows of wires as current sheets.
