Electromagnetic Induction by Moving a Magnet

Electromagnetic Induction by Moving a Magnet 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand that an induced current flows only while the magnetic field (number of field lines) inside the coil is changing, that its direction opposes the magnet's motion, and that it grows with the magnet's speed, the number of coil turns, and the magnet's strength.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you leave the magnet sitting still inside the coil, what do you think the galvanometer needle will do?💡 電流が流れるのは「磁石がある」ときでしょうか、それとも「コイルの中の磁界が変わっている」ときでしょうか。Does current flow when a magnet is simply present, or when the magnetic field inside the coil is changing?
Do you think the needle swings the same way when you push the magnet in as when you pull it out, or the opposite way?💡 入れるときと出すときで、コイルの中の磁界は「増える」「減る」のどちらになるか考えてみましょう。Think about whether the magnetic field inside the coil increases or decreases when pushing in and when pulling out.

Try it

Uncheck "Auto demo (moves in and out again and again; pressing a button stops it)" and confirm that while the magnet is still, "Induced current I" reads 0.00 mA and the galvanometer needle is at the center.
With the starting settings (Magnet speed 2.0×, Coil turns 60 turns, Magnet strength 4.0), hold down "Push magnet in →" and watch the needle, the green arrows on the coil, and the graph at the bottom. Let go partway and check that the current immediately drops to 0.
Hold down "← Pull magnet out" and compare with pushing in: the sign of the current, the needle direction, the induced poles (N/S) at the coil ends, and the purple "Coil's field" arrow.
Set "Magnet speed" to 1.0×, "Coil turns" to 50 turns and "Magnet strength" to 2.0, hold "Push magnet in →" and record the current. Then change only the speed to 2.0× and repeat. Also try doubling only the turns or only the strength.

Check

When the magnet is stopped inside the coil, what are the induced current and the galvanometer needle doing?→ 誘導電流は 0.00 mA で、針は中央(0)にもどり、コイル上の矢印も消える。 The induced current is 0.00 mA, the needle returns to the center (0), and the arrows on the coil disappear. The graph runs flat along the 0 line.
How did the direction of the current differ between pushing in and pulling out?→ 挿入中は +4.80 mA(針は右、波形は上)、引き出し中は −4.80 mA(針は左、波形は下)で、向きが逆になった。 Pushing in gave +4.80 mA (needle right, graph up); pulling out gave −4.80 mA (needle left, graph down). The direction reversed, but the size was the same at the same speed.
While pushing in, which pole appeared at the coil's left end (the end facing the magnet)? How does that act on the magnet's motion?→ 左端はN極になり、近づいてくる磁石のN極と反発して、入ってくるのをおし返す向きになる。 The left end became an N pole, which repels the approaching N pole of the magnet and pushes it back. When pulling out, the left end became an S pole, which attracts the magnet's N pole and pulls it back.
Starting from speed 1.0×, 50 turns, strength 2.0, what happened to the current when you changed only the speed to 2.0×?→ 1.00 mA It went from 1.00 mA to 2.00 mA, exactly double. Doubling the turns or the strength also doubles it (formula: speed × turns × strength ÷ 100).

Think further

Why does the coil make a field that pushes back on the magnet when it is pushed in? Think about what would happen if it pulled the magnet in instead.→ 引きこむ向きだと、磁石は勝手に加速してさらに大きな電流が流れ、何もしなくてもエネルギーがどんどん生まれることになり、エネルギーの保存に反する。 If it pulled the magnet in, the magnet would speed up on its own, making ever larger currents and creating energy from nothing, which breaks conservation of energy. Because the induced field opposes the motion (Lenz's law), you must do work moving the magnet to get electrical energy.
In a hand-crank generator, why does current keep flowing while you keep turning it, and why does its direction keep alternating?→ 回転によってコイルの中の磁界が増えたり減ったりを連続してくり返すので、誘導電流が流れ続ける。 Rotation keeps making the field inside the coil increase and decrease over and over, so induced current keeps flowing. Just as pushing in and pulling out gave opposite currents, increasing and decreasing field give opposite directions, so the current alternates (AC).

The model computes the current as speed × turns × strength ÷ 100, so it has the same size at every position while the magnet moves (with a real magnet the field changes fastest, and the current is largest, when a pole passes near the coil ends). Lenz's law is enrichment at lower-secondary level; present it as "the induced current opposes the motion."
