P-Wave and S-Wave Particle Motion Visualizer

中1 · 地学単元: 火山・地震(P波とS波の伝わり方、初期微動継続時間)P-Wave and S-Wave Particle Motion Visualizer 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that a P-wave is a longitudinal wave in which particles vibrate back and forth along the direction of travel, that an S-wave is a transverse wave in which particles vibrate at right angles to it, and that because the P-wave is faster, a seismometer records the preliminary tremors first, with a P–S time proportional to the distance from the focus.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When an earthquake wave travels through rock, do you think the rock particles themselves are carried far away from the focus?💡 池に石を投げて波が広がるとき、水面に浮かんだ木の葉がどう動くかを思い出しましょう。Think about how a leaf floating on a pond moves when waves spread out from a stone thrown into the water.
If the distance from the focus to the seismometer doubles, what do you think happens to the P–S time (the time from the P-wave arrival to the S-wave arrival)?💡 P波とS波は、それぞれ一定の速さで進むと考えてみましょう。Assume that the P-wave and the S-wave each travel at a constant speed.

Try it

In the starting state (Distance d 200 km, Amplitude 60 %, Playback speed ×4.0), press "Reset" and watch which way the particles (dots) shake in the upper P-wave lane and the lower S-wave lane. Also watch how far the orange marker particle moves from its rest position (the cross).
On the seismometer record on the right, compare the shaking when the P-wave arrives and when the S-wave arrives. Use "Pause" if needed, and read the yellow band (preliminary tremors) and the values in the table below.
Move the "Distance d" slider to 100 km, 200 km, and 400 km, and record the "P arrival", "S arrival", and "P–S time" values in the table.
Set the "Amplitude" slider to 100 % and see how the particle motion on the left and the trace on the right change. Also check whether the P–S time changes.

Check

Which way did the particles shake in the P-wave and in the S-wave?→ P波では粒子が進行方向(左右)に前後に揺れ、粒子が密な部分(濃い帯)と疎な部分が右へ伝わりました(縦波)。 In the P-wave, particles shook back and forth along the direction of travel (left–right), and crowded regions (dark bands) and spread-out regions moved to the right (a longitudinal wave). In the S-wave, particles shook at right angles to the direction of travel (up and down) (a transverse wave).
Was the marker particle carried far away from the focus?→ 運ばれませんでした。 No. It only shook around its rest position (the cross); only the shaking (the wave) traveled to the right.
At a distance of 200 km, when did the P-wave and the S-wave arrive, and what was the P–S time? How did the shaking on the seismometer change?→ P波は約 28.6 s(200÷7)、S波は 50.0 s(200÷4)に到達し、初期微動継続時間は約 21.4 s でした。 The P-wave arrived at about 28.6 s (200 ÷ 7) and the S-wave at 50.0 s (200 ÷ 4), so the P–S time was about 21.4 s. Small shaking (preliminary tremors) began when the P-wave arrived and changed to large shaking (main tremors) when the S-wave arrived.
How did the P–S time change as the distance went from 100 km to 200 km to 400 km?→ 約 10.7 s → 21.4 s → 42.9 s となり、距離が2倍になると初期微動継続時間も2倍になりました(比例)。 It went from about 10.7 s to 21.4 s to 42.9 s: doubling the distance doubled the P–S time (direct proportion). Changing the amplitude did not change the P–S time.

Think further

At one station the P–S time was 15 s. Using the same speeds as this simulation (P-wave 7 km/s, S-wave 4 km/s), about how far away is the focus?→ 初期微動継続時間 = 3d/28 なので、d = 15 × 28 ÷ 3 = 140 km です。 Since P–S time = 3d/28, d = 15 × 28 ÷ 3 = 140 km. You can confirm it by setting the slider to 140 km: the P–S time in the table reads 15.0 s.
An earthquake early warning detects the P-wave and announces the quake before the strong S-wave shaking arrives. Why does it sometimes come too late near the focus?→ 震源に近いほど初期微動継続時間が短く(d = 0 km では 0 s)、P波を観測して速報を出すまでの時間のうちにS波が届いてしまうからです。The closer you are to the focus, the shorter the P–S time (0 s at d = 0 km), so the S-wave arrives before there is time to detect the P-wave and send the warning.

The model assumes constant speeds of 7 km/s for P-waves and 4 km/s for S-waves; real speeds vary with rock type and depth. The rock on the left is scaled so that the distance from the focus to d fits the screen width, so the wavelength and shaking period are not realistic but chosen for clarity. The proportional relationship between P–S time and distance (Omori's formula) becomes d ≈ 9.3 × P–S time under these assumptions.
