Seeing Current as Electrons ― Ohm's Law and Conservation of Current

中2 · 物理単元: 電流と電圧(直列・並列回路、オームの法則)Seeing Current as Electrons ― Ohm's Law and Conservation of Current 目安 25分about 25 min
Students understand that an electric current is a flow of electrons, that in a series circuit the current is the same everywhere (electrons do not slow down inside a resistor), and that in a parallel circuit each branch current is V/R and the main-wire current is their sum, linking all of this to Ohm's law.

Predict (before you touch anything)

In a circuit with R1 and R2 connected in series, do you think electrons slow down only while passing through a resistor, or do they move at the same speed everywhere in the circuit?💡 電子が抵抗の手前でつまったり、抵抗のあとで減ったりしたら、回路の中の電子の数や並び方はどうなってしまうでしょうか。If electrons piled up before a resistor or became fewer after it, what would happen to the number and spacing of electrons in the circuit?
In a parallel circuit, do you think electrons move faster in the branch with the smaller resistance or the larger resistance?💡 並列では、どちらの枝にも同じ電圧がかかります。 In parallel, both branches have the same voltage across them. Recall Ohm's law, I = V/R.

Try it

In the starting state ("Series", Voltage V 3.0 V, Resistor R1 20 Ω, Resistor R2 40 Ω), watch how the electrons (blue dots) move before, inside, and after the resistors, and read the value of I = V/(R1+R2) on the right. Use the legend at the top left to compare the "Electron flow" and "Current direction" arrows.
Raise "Voltage V" to 6.0 V and watch how the electron speed and the current I change. Then set "Resistor R2" to 100 Ω and read the electron speed and I again.
Set Voltage V back to 3.0 V and Resistor R2 back to 40 Ω, then press the "Series (tap for parallel)" button to switch to a parallel circuit. Compare the electron speeds in the R1 and R2 branches and read I1, I2, and the main-wire I.
Still in parallel, set "Resistor R1" to 10 Ω, "Resistor R2" to 100 Ω, and Voltage V to 6.0 V, and observe the difference in electron speed between the branches. Finally press the "Switch: ON (tap to turn off)" button and see what happens to the electrons.

Check

In the series circuit, did the electrons slow down inside the resistors? What was the current I?→ 遅くなりませんでした。 I = 3.0 V ÷ (20 Ω + 40 Ω) = 0.050 A(50 mA)で、回路のどこでも同じです。No. The electrons moved with the same speed and spacing before, inside, and after the resistors. I = 3.0 V ÷ (20 Ω + 40 Ω) = 0.050 A (50 mA), the same everywhere in the circuit.
In the series circuit, what happened to I when the voltage was 6.0 V? What happened when R2 was then set to 100 Ω?→ 電圧を2倍の 6.0 V にすると I も2倍の 0.100 A になり、電子全体が速くなりました。 Doubling the voltage to 6.0 V doubled I to 0.100 A, and all the electrons moved faster. With R2 = 100 Ω, R1 + R2 = 120 Ω and I = 0.050 A, so all the electrons in the whole circuit slowed down together.
In the parallel circuit (V = 3.0 V, R1 = 20 Ω, R2 = 40 Ω), what were I1, I2, and the main-wire I? In which branch did the electrons move faster?→ I1 = 0.150 A、I2 = 0.075 A、幹線 I = I1 + I2 = 0.225 A でした。 I1 = 0.150 A, I2 = 0.075 A, and the main-wire I = I1 + I2 = 0.225 A. The electrons moved faster in the R1 branch, which has the smaller resistance.
Was the direction of electron flow the same as the direction of current?→ 逆向きでした。 No, they were opposite. Electrons flowed from the battery's negative terminal to its positive terminal, while the current direction was shown from positive to negative.

Think further

The total number of electrons stayed fixed at 90. If electrons piled up and slowed down just before a resistor in a series circuit, what contradiction would arise?→ 抵抗の手前に電子がたまり続け、ほかの場所の電子が減ってしまいます。 Electrons would keep collecting before the resistor while other parts of the circuit ran short of them. In a single loop the number of electrons passing any point per second must be the same everywhere (conservation of current), so a resistor slows all the electrons in the whole circuit together.
Appliances plugged into household outlets are connected in parallel. What happens to the current in the main wire as more appliances are switched on?→ どの器具にも同じ電圧がかかり、それぞれの電流が足し合わされるので、幹線の電流は大きくなります。 Each appliance gets the same voltage and their currents add up, so the main-wire current increases. That is why using too many appliances at once can trip the circuit breaker.

The simulation draws electron speed proportional to current, which assumes the wire has the same thickness everywhere; point out that the real average electron speed (drift velocity) is very slow, under about 1 mm per second. The battery's internal resistance and the wire resistance are ignored. With R1 = 10 Ω and V = 6.0 V in parallel the current is 0.6 A, so in real experiments remind students that resistors can get hot.
