Series & Parallel Circuits
Students understand that with two identical bulbs, a series circuit has the same current everywhere and the voltage is shared between the bulbs, while a parallel circuit gives each bulb the full battery voltage and the current splits into branches; Ohm's law sets the current, voltage and power, which is why the bulbs in parallel are brighter.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you connect two identical bulbs to the same battery, do you think the bulbs will glow brighter when connected in series or in parallel?💡 それぞれのつなぎ方で、1個の電球にかかる電圧がどうなるかを考えましょう。Think about what voltage each single bulb gets in each type of circuit.
In a series circuit, do you think the current becomes smaller after passing through the first bulb?💡 電球は電流を「使って」なくしてしまうのでしょうか、それともエネルギーだけを受け取るのでしょうか。Does a bulb use up the current itself, or does it only take energy from it?
Try it
In the starting state ("Series", Battery voltage E = 3.0 V, Bulb resistance R = 6 Ω), compare the speed of the dots (current) at different places in the circuit, and record "Total R: 2R", "Current I", "Bulb V: E/2" and "Bulb power" in the panel.
Press the "Parallel" button. Watch how the dots split at the "Split point" and come together at the "Join point", and compare the dot speed in the branches with that in the main wire. Record "Total R: R/2", "Current I", "Branch I/2", "Bulb V: E" and "Bulb power".
Switch between "Series" and "Parallel" a few times and compare how the bulbs glow and the "Glow ×1/4" and "Glow ×1" labels.
Set the "Battery voltage E" slider to 6.0 V and record how the total current and bulb power change in series and in parallel.
Keeping E = 6.0 V in series, set the "Bulb resistance R" slider to 12 Ω and check how the total current and the bulb voltage change.
Check
In the series circuit (E = 3.0 V, R = 6 Ω), what were the current and the voltage across each bulb? Did the dot speed differ from place to place?→ 合成抵抗 12 Ω で全電流 0.25 A(= 3.0 ÷ 12)。 The total resistance was 12 Ω and the current was 0.25 A (= 3.0 ÷ 12). The current was 0.25 A everywhere, and the dots moved at the same speed all around the circuit. Each bulb had E/2 = 1.50 V and a power of 0.38 W.
In the parallel circuit (E = 3.0 V, R = 6 Ω), what were the total current, the branch currents and the voltage across each bulb?→ 合成抵抗 3.0 Ω で全電流 1.00 A。 0.50 A + 0.50 A = 1.00 A。 The total resistance was 3.0 Ω and the total current was 1.00 A. It split into 0.50 A in each branch at the split point (branch dots moved at half the main-wire speed) and returned to 1.00 A at the join point: 0.50 A + 0.50 A = 1.00 A. Each bulb had the full 3.00 V and a power of 1.50 W.
How did the brightness of the bulbs differ between series and parallel?→ 並列の電球のほうが明らかに明るかった。 The bulbs in parallel were clearly brighter. Each series bulb had only 0.38 W, a quarter of the 1.50 W in parallel, and was labeled "Glow ×1/4". Half the voltage also means half the current, so the power is 1/2 × 1/2 = 1/4.
How did the current change when E was set to 6.0 V, and when R was set to 12 Ω in series?→ E = 6.0 V にすると電流は2倍になり、直列で 0.50 A、並列で 2.00 A(枝 1.00 A ずつ)になった。 With E = 6.0 V the current doubled: 0.50 A in series and 2.00 A in parallel (1.00 A per branch). In series with R = 12 Ω, the total resistance became 24 Ω and the current halved to 0.25 A, but each bulb still had E/2 = 3.00 V.
Think further
Appliances plugged into household outlets are connected in parallel, not in series. Use what you saw in the simulation to explain why.→ 並列ではどの器具にも電源と同じ電圧(家庭では 100 V)がかかるので、器具の数が変わっても決められた性能どおりに働く。 In parallel every appliance gets the full supply voltage (100 V in Japanese homes), so each works as designed no matter how many are connected. In series the voltage would be shared, making each one dimmer or weaker, and if one appliance broke the circuit, current would stop flowing through all of them.
The total resistance of the parallel circuit (3.0 Ω) was smaller than one bulb's resistance (6 Ω). Why does adding a resistor make the total resistance smaller?→ 並列では電流の通り道が2本に増えるので、同じ電圧でもより多くの電流(1.00 A、電球1個のときの 0.50 A の2倍)が流れる。 In parallel there are two paths for the current, so at the same voltage more current flows (1.00 A, twice the 0.50 A through one bulb). Since I = E ÷ R, twice the current means the total resistance is halved (R/2).
Common misconceptions
Current gets used up as it passes through a bulb." In a series circuit the current is the same everywhere; a bulb uses energy (power), not current.
Adding more bulbs always increases the total resistance." That is true in series, but in parallel the extra paths make the total resistance smaller.

The model keeps each bulb's resistance constant regardless of temperature and treats the battery's internal resistance and the wires' resistance as zero. The dots show the direction (out of the + terminal toward the − terminal) and size of the current, not the actual motion or speed of electrons. You may mention that a real bulb's resistance is lower when it glows dimly, so in series it is not exactly 1/4 as bright.
