How P-Waves and S-Waves Travel: Preliminary Tremor Duration
Students understand that in an earthquake the faster P-wave arrives first and causes the preliminary tremor, the slower S-wave arrives later and causes the main shaking, and that the gap between their arrivals (the duration of preliminary tremor) grows in proportion to the distance from the source.

Predict (before you touch anything)
When an earthquake happens, which do you think reaches the seismograph at a station first: the P-wave or the S-wave? What kind of shaking do you think each one causes?💡 P波は約 7 km/s、S波は約 4 km/s で伝わります。 The P-wave travels at about 7 km/s and the S-wave at about 4 km/s. Compare how long each needs to cover the same distance.
For a station farther from the earthquake, what do you think happens to the time between the P-wave arrival and the S-wave arrival (the duration of preliminary tremor)?💡 速さの違う2人が同じ所から走り出したとき、ゴールまでの距離が長いほど到着時刻の差はどうなるでしょうか。If two runners with different speeds start together, how does the gap between their finishing times change when the race is longer?

In the starting state (Epicentral distance D = 500 km, S-wave speed vS = 4.0 km/s), watch the animation. In the cross-section, observe what happens to the red P-wave front and the blue S-wave front when they pass the magma chamber. Use "0.25×" playback or "Pause" if it is hard to follow.
In the "Seismograph record" on the right, compare the small shaking that starts when the P-wave arrives (preliminary tremor) with the large shaking after the S-wave arrives (main shaking). Record the "P arrives", "S arrives" and "Prelim. tremor" values shown at the top.
Set the "Epicentral distance D" slider to 250 km and then 1000 km, and record how the preliminary tremor duration changes.
Return the distance to 500 km, set the "S-wave speed vS" slider to 3.0 km/s and then 5.0 km/s, and compare how the preliminary tremor duration and the start of the main shaking on the record change. Press "Reset" to replay from the start.
Check
What happened to the P-wave and S-wave fronts when they reached the magma chamber (liquid)?→ 赤いP波はマグマ溜まりを通り抜けて伝わったが、青いS波はマグマ溜まりの中では消え、その後ろ側には波面がとぎれていた。 The red P-wave passed straight through the magma chamber, but the blue S-wave disappeared inside it, leaving a gap in its front behind the chamber. S-waves cannot travel through liquid.
At D = 500 km and vS = 4.0 km/s, what were the P and S arrival times and the preliminary tremor duration? How did the shaking on the record differ?→ P波到達 71.4 s、S波到達 125.0 s、初期微動継続時間 53.6 s(= 500÷4.0 − 500÷7)。 P arrives at 71.4 s, S at 125.0 s, and the preliminary tremor lasts 53.6 s (= 500÷4.0 − 500÷7). After the P-wave arrived there was small, rapid shaking; at the moment the S-wave arrived the trace jumped sharply into large shaking (main shaking).
What happened to the preliminary tremor duration at 250 km and 1000 km?→ 250 km It was 26.8 s at 250 km, 53.6 s at 500 km and 107.1 s at 1000 km: doubling the distance doubled the duration (direct proportion). At every distance the P-wave arrived first.
What happened to the preliminary tremor duration when the S-wave speed was 3.0 km/s and 5.0 km/s?→ 3.0 km/s At 3.0 km/s the S-wave arrived at 166.7 s and the duration grew to 95.2 s; at 5.0 km/s the S-wave arrived at 100.0 s and the duration shrank to 28.6 s. The P arrival (71.4 s) did not change.
Think further
At a station the preliminary tremor lasted 20 seconds. If the P-wave travels at 7 km/s and the S-wave at 4 km/s, roughly how far away is the earthquake source?→ 初期微動継続時間 = D÷4 − D÷7 = 3D/28 なので、D = 20 × 28 ÷ 3 ≒ 187 km。 Duration = D÷4 − D÷7 = 3D/28, so D = 20 × 28 ÷ 3 ≈ 187 km. In the simulation 250 km gives 26.8 s, so 20 s means somewhat closer than that. This is how the distance to the source is found from the preliminary tremor duration (Omori's formula).
Earthquake early warning systems detect the P-wave at stations near the source and warn distant areas that strong shaking is coming. The P-wave is faster than the S-wave, so it arrives first, and the S-wave that causes strong shaking comes later. Farther areas have a longer preliminary tremor duration, which gives time to send a warning based on the P-wave before the S-wave arrives.
Common misconceptions
Earthquake shaking is one kind of wave that arrives all at once." P-waves and S-waves travel at different speeds and arrive one after the other, so small shaking (preliminary tremor) comes before large shaking (main shaking).
The preliminary tremor duration depends on the earthquake's magnitude." It depends mainly on the distance from the source and grows in proportion to that distance.

The model treats the source as shallow, so the source distance ≈ epicentral distance D; the P-wave speed is fixed at 7 km/s and the S-wave speed can be set between 2 and 5 km/s. Waves travel in straight lines at constant speed, and the seismograph trace is a schematic of the different kinds of shaking. The animation runs faster for larger distances (see the * note at the bottom), so have students read times from the numbers at the top.
