Supersaturated Solution & Heat-Releasing Crystallization Simulator (Sodium Acetate Hand Warmer)
Students understand that a supersaturated solution stays clear unless disturbed, but once a seed crystal is added, crystallization spreads, only the excess solute comes out, heat is released, and the liquid ends up as a saturated solution at its new temperature.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If a solution holds more dissolved substance than its solubility (a supersaturated solution) and you just leave it alone, do you think crystals will appear by themselves?💡 使い捨てでない「カイロ」は、中の金属板をパチンと押すまで液体のままです。 A reusable hand warmer stays liquid until you click the metal disc inside. What could be acting as the trigger?
Once crystals start to form, do you think all the dissolved substance will turn into crystals? And what do you think will happen to the liquid's temperature?💡 その温度の水 100 g にとけることができる量(溶解度)を思い出しましょう。 Recall how much can dissolve in 100 g of water at that temperature (the solubility). And what is a hand warmer used for?
Try it
In the starting state (Supersaturation ratio 1.40×, Start temperature 30 ℃), wait about 10 seconds without touching anything. Read "Temp", "Conc.", "Solubility" and "State" in the top-left panel, and the "Status" line ("... s, no crystals").
Press "Add a seed crystal" (or tap the beaker). Watch the crystal wave spread and how the thermometer, "Crystals" and "Temp rise" values change. When "Crystallization done" appears, record the final Temp, Conc. and Solubility.
Press "Heat to redissolve (reset)". Check that the crystals dissolve and the liquid turns clear, and that no crystals appear even after it cools back down.
Set "Supersaturation ratio" to 1.70× and add a seed. Compare the final temperature and the amount of crystals with the 1.40× run.
Set "Supersaturation ratio" to 1.00× and add a seed. Check what happens (or does not happen).
Check
Before adding a seed, what happened when the supersaturated solution was left alone?→ 濃度 76.2 g/100g水 が溶解度 54.4 g/100g水 を超えて「過飽和」と表示されていたが、粒子は動き続けるだけで結晶は出ず、ビーカーは透明のままだった(「放置 ○ s:析出なし」)。The concentration (76.2 g/100 g water) was above the solubility (54.4 g/100 g water) and the state was "Supersaturated", but the particles just kept moving, no crystals formed, and the beaker stayed clear ("... s, no crystals").
After the seed was added, how did the crystals spread? How did the temperature change?→ 種を入れた所を中心に円い波が数秒かけて広がり、波が通った所の粒子だけが結晶(四角)になった。 A circular wave spread out from the seed over a few seconds, and only particles the wave had passed became crystals (squares). The temperature did not jump at once; it rose gradually from 30 ℃ to about 40 ℃ as the amount of crystals grew (Temp rise about +10 ℃).
When crystallization finished, had all the dissolved substance turned into crystals? How did the concentration compare with the solubility?→ 全部ではなく、析出量は約 10.2 g/100g水 だけで、多くの粒子は液中に残った。 No. Only about 10.2 g/100 g water crystallized and many particles stayed in the liquid. The concentration became about 65.9 g/100 g water, equal to the solubility at the final temperature (about 40 ℃), and the state changed to "Saturated".
What happened at a ratio of 1.70× and at 1.00×?→ 1.70 倍では析出量が約 17.1 g/100g水 に増え、液温は約 47 ℃(昇温 約 +17 ℃)まで上がり、1.40 倍より高くなった。 At 1.70× about 17.1 g/100 g water crystallized and the temperature rose to about 47 ℃ (Temp rise about +17 ℃), higher than at 1.40×. At 1.00× (saturated) the screen said "Seed does not grow": no crystals formed and the temperature did not change.
Think further
The difference from the solubility at 30 ℃ is 76.2 − 54.4 = 21.8 g/100 g water, yet only about 10 g/100 g water actually crystallized. Why didn't the whole difference come out?→ 結晶ができるときに熱が出て液温が約 40 ℃ に上がり、溶解度も 65.9 g/100g水 に大きくなったから。 Because crystallization released heat that raised the temperature to about 40 ℃, and the solubility rose to 65.9 g/100 g water. More solute can stay dissolved at the higher solubility, so the amount that crystallizes is the excess over the solubility at the final temperature.
A reusable hand warmer can be used again after it is heated in boiling water. Use what you saw in the simulation to explain why.→ 加熱すると溶解度が上がって結晶がすべて溶け、透明な溶液に戻る。 Heating raises the solubility so all the crystals dissolve and the liquid becomes clear. When it then cools without any trigger (seed), no crystals form and it becomes supersaturated again, so the next time it is triggered it crystallizes and releases heat again.
Common misconceptions
As soon as the solubility is exceeded, crystals appear." A supersaturated solution can stay clear for a long time until something such as a seed crystal or a shock triggers crystallization.
Once crystallization starts, all the dissolved substance turns into crystals." Only the amount above the solubility comes out; the remaining liquid is a saturated solution at that temperature.

Solubility uses an approximate formula for sodium acetate (anhydrous basis), 40 + 0.016T², the temperature rises 1 ℃ per 1 g/100 g water of crystals, and no heat escapes to the surroundings. In a real hand warmer the crystals are a trihydrate that also takes up water, and the temperature reaches around 50 ℃; this model does not include that. The number of particles is drawn in proportion to concentration and does not represent real numbers or sizes of ions.
