Sea Level Slider: Deposition, Erosion & Re-deposition (Rock Layers)

Students understand that river sediment settles on the sea floor sorted by grain size, that a fall in sea level erodes the layers and leaves an erosion surface, and that when the sea rises again new layers pile up on top, so the layers below the erosion surface are older than those above it.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When a river carries sand (coarse grains) and mud (fine grains) into the sea, where do you think each one settles: close to the river mouth or far from it?💡 水の流れが弱まったとき、重く大きい粒と軽く小さい粒のどちらが先に沈むでしょうか。When the water slows down, which sinks first: a big, heavy grain or a small, light one?
If the sea level drops and layers that formed on the sea floor end up above the sea, what do you think will happen to those layers?💡 陸の上や波打ち際では、川の流れや波がどんな働きをするか考えましょう。Think about what flowing rivers and waves do on land and at the shoreline.

Try it

In the starting state (Sea level 50, Erosion strength 50%), watch the yellow sand grains and brown mud grains leaving the river mouth, and compare the layer colors with the legend "Sand (coarse, near river mouth)" and "Mud (fine, far away)". Use "Pause" to freeze the motion if needed.
Lower the "Sea level" slider to 35. Watch the layers that now stick out above the sea being worn away and the red dashed "Erosion surface" forming. Also check the "Erosion surfaces" count in the info box.
Keeping Sea level at 35, set "Erosion strength" to 0% and watch the info box and the landform. Then raise it to 100% and compare how fast the layers are cut away.
Return "Erosion strength" to 50% and raise "Sea level" to 60. Observe the shape of the first new layer laid right on the erosion surface and the shape of the layers that pile up above it.
Repeat the 35 → 60 fall and rise once more and check the order of the layers once there are two erosion surfaces. Press "Reset" to start over.

Check

Where did the sand and the mud settle?→ 黄色い砂は河口のすぐ近く(陸側)に積もり、茶色い泥は遠く沖のほう(左側)まで運ばれてから積もった。 The yellow sand settled right next to the river mouth (land side), while the brown mud was carried far offshore (to the left) before settling. Sand grains sink fast and mud grains sink slowly.
What happened to the layers and the display when you lowered the sea level to 35?→ 海面より上に出た地層の上部が削られて消え、谷のようにくぼんだ形が現れた。 The upper part of the layers above the sea was cut away and a valley-like dip appeared. A red dashed erosion surface was drawn along the cut, the info box switched to [Erosion], and it showed "Erosion surfaces 1". The shoreline and river mouth moved seaward (left), and new sand settled farther offshore.
What was different when "Erosion strength" was 0% and 100%?→ 0% では地層が海面上に出ていても削られず、【侵食なし】と表示された。 At 0% the layers above the sea were not worn away at all and the box said [No erosion]. At 100% they were cut away faster than at 50%, and the valley became deeper.
After raising the sea level to 60, how did layers pile up on the erosion surface?→ 堆積が再開し(【海進・再堆積】)、最初の層は侵食面の凸凹に沿って積もり、積み重なるにつれてくぼみが埋まって水平に近い層に戻った。 Deposition started again ([Sea rise & re-deposition]). The first layer followed the bumps of the erosion surface, and as more layers piled up the hollows filled in and the layers became nearly flat again. Layers below the erosion surface are older; layers above it are newer.

Think further

On a cliff you find layers cut off by an uneven surface, with other layers lying on top of it. What events can you infer happened at this place in the past?→ ①海底で下の地層が積もる → ②土地の隆起や海面の低下で陸上に出て侵食される(凸凹の侵食面ができる) → ③再び沈降・海面の上昇で海底になり、その上に新しい地層が積もる、という順にできごとが起きたと考えられる。 (1) The lower layers formed on the sea floor; (2) uplift or a fall in sea level exposed them on land, where they were eroded into an uneven surface; (3) the area sank or the sea rose again, and new layers were deposited on top. This kind of contact is called an unconformity, the same relationship you made by lowering and then raising the sea level in the simulation.
Looking up through the layers at one spot, you find a sand layer on top of a mud layer. How did the water depth (distance from the river mouth) at that spot probably change?→ 泥は河口から遠い沖、砂は河口に近い浅い所に積もるので、その場所は時間とともに河口に近くなった(浅くなった)と考えられる。 Mud settles far offshore and sand settles close to the river mouth in shallow water, so the spot probably became closer to the river mouth (shallower) over time. In the simulation, lowering the sea level moved the river mouth seaward, and sand began to settle where mud had been settling before.

Sea level" is a relative 30-65 scale, not real heights or ages, and time is greatly compressed. Erosion on land lumps together rivers, rain and waves in a simplified way, there are only two grain types (sand and mud), and the light/dark shading of layers simply alternates at fixed time intervals to make stacking easy to see. It works well as an introduction to unconformities, and you can point out that uplift and subsidence of the land produce the same relationship in real strata.
