Ice and Dry Ice — Melting vs. Sublimation

中1 · 化学単元: 状態変化と粒子のモデルIce and Dry Ice — Melting vs. Sublimation 目安 15分about 15 min
Students understand, as differences in how particles are arranged and move, that ice changes from solid → liquid → gas as it warms, while dry ice (carbon dioxide) at ordinary pressure skips the liquid and turns directly from solid to gas (sublimation).

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you leave dry ice at room temperature, do you think it will form a puddle (liquid) the way ice does?💡 ドライアイスを入れた袋や箱の中が、使ったあとにぬれているかどうかを思い出してみましょう。Think about whether a bag or box that held dry ice is wet after the dry ice is gone.
How do you think the arrangement and speed of particles differ among a solid, a liquid and a gas?💡 粒子どうしの間かくと、粒子がその場にとどまっているかどうかに注目しましょう。Focus on how far apart the particles are and whether they stay in place.

Try it

Set the "Temperature" slider to −100.0℃ and confirm that both "Ice (water)" on the left and "Dry ice" on the right are "Solid", with particles in a regular arrangement vibrating in place.
Raise the temperature to −60.0℃ and then −10.0℃, and observe the state label (top left of each box) and the particles on the dry ice side. Also check whether anything changes on the ice side.
Raise the temperature to 10.0℃ and observe how the arrangement of particles on the ice side changes.
Raise the temperature to 50.0℃ and observe the state label on the ice side and the particles escaping from the surface. Also record the "Particle speed (relative)" value at each temperature.
Change "Particles shown (both panels)" to 20 or 60, and confirm that the number of particles changes in both panels and the solid arrangement is rebuilt.

Check

At −60.0℃ and at −10.0℃, what states were the dry ice side and the ice side in?→ −60.0℃ ではドライアイスは「固体+気体」で、固体の表面から粒子が直接飛び出していました。 At −60.0℃ the dry ice was "Solid + Gas", with particles jumping directly off the surface of the solid. At −10.0℃ it was all "Gas". The ice side stayed "Solid" at both temperatures.
Did the dry ice side ever show "Liquid" or particles collecting at the bottom of the container?→ ありません。 No. Above −78.5℃ (its sublimation point) dry ice turns directly from solid to gas, and it never becomes a liquid at any temperature.
What were the particles on the ice side like at 10.0℃ and at 50.0℃?→ 10.0℃ では規則正しい並びがくずれて「液体」になり、粒子どうしがくっついたまま底で位置を入れかえながら動いていました。 At 10.0℃ the regular arrangement broke down into "Liquid": particles stayed in contact at the bottom while changing places. At 50.0℃ it became "Liquid + Gas", and particles that escaped from the surface flew quickly around the container, bouncing off the walls.
How did "Particle speed (relative)" change as the temperature rose?→ −100.0℃ で×0.33、−60.0℃ で×0.50、20.0℃ で×0.83、60.0℃ で×1.00 と、温度が高いほど連続的に速くなりました。 It increased steadily with temperature: ×0.33 at −100.0℃, ×0.50 at −60.0℃, ×0.83 at 20.0℃ and ×1.00 at 60.0℃. The vibration of the solid also became larger.

Think further

The number of particles does not change when the state changes. Why, then, does the volume increase greatly when dry ice sublimes?→ 固体では粒子どうしがすき間なく並んでいますが、気体になると粒子どうしの間かくが大きく広がり、自由に飛び回るからです。 In a solid the particles are packed closely together, but in a gas the spaces between them become very large and they fly around freely. The number of particles (the mass) stays the same; the change in spacing is what changes the volume.
Why do you think dry ice is called "dry" ice?→ ふつうの圧力では溶けて液体にならず、固体から直接気体になるため、まわりがぬれないからです。Because at ordinary pressure it does not melt into a liquid but turns directly from solid to gas, so it does not make things wet.

In this model, dry ice gradually becomes gas above −78.5℃ and is almost all gas by about −30℃, and water visibly evaporates only at 40℃ and above. Real water evaporates slowly below 40℃ (even ice does), and boils at 100℃, which is outside the slider range (up to 60℃). As an extension, you can mention that carbon dioxide can become a liquid at high pressure (above about 5 atm).
