Why Bikes Lean Into Curves
Students understand that a bike on a curve leans inward so that the line of action of the resultant of gravity and centrifugal force passes through the contact point, that the angle is set by tanθ = v²/(gR) (more lean when faster or on a tighter curve), and that the bike slips if friction cannot supply what is needed.

Predict (before you touch anything)
On the same curve (radius), do you think a bike must lean more when riding fast or when riding slowly?💡 速く曲がるほど、体が外側に押される感じは強くなるでしょうか、弱くなるでしょうか。When you turn faster, does the feeling of being pushed outward get stronger or weaker?
If the bike does not lean enough on a curve, which way do you think it will fall: toward the inside or the outside of the curve?💡 遠心力はカーブのどちら向きにはたらく見かけの力か考えましょう。Think about which way the centrifugal force (an apparent force) acts on a curve.
Try it
In the starting state (Speed v = 8.0 m/s, Radius R = 20 m, "Auto θ"), look at the gravity, centrifugal force and resultant arrows in (B) Front view, check that the resultant's line of action passes through the contact point, and read the ideal θ shown.
Keep R = 20 m, set "Speed v" to 12.0 m/s and read θ. Then return v to 8.0 m/s, set "Radius R" to 50 m and read θ.
At R = 20 m set v = 15.0 m/s, or at v = 8.0 m/s set R = 5 m, and watch the "μ needed" value and how the bike moves in (A) Top view.
Return to v = 8.0 m/s and R = 20 m and press "Manual θ". Set "Lean θ" to 21.0°, 10.0° and 30.0° (you may press "Reset" each time), and watch the difference from the ideal value and which way the bike falls in the top and front views.
Check
What was the ideal θ at v = 8.0 m/s and R = 20 m? What happened when v was 12.0 m/s, and when R was 50 m?→ v = 8.0 m/s、R = 20 m では tanθ = 0.327 で θ = 18.1°。 At v = 8.0 m/s and R = 20 m, tanθ = 0.327 and θ = 18.1°. At v = 12.0 m/s it increased to 36.3°, and at R = 50 m it decreased to 7.4°. Lean grows with speed and shrinks as the radius gets larger (a gentler curve).
In the front view, which way did the gravity, centrifugal force, resultant and friction arrows point? Where did the resultant pass?→ 重力は重心から真下、遠心力は重心から真横の外側、摩擦力は接地点で真横の内側(円の中心向き)を向いていた。 Gravity pointed straight down from the center of gravity, centrifugal force pointed straight sideways to the outside from the center of gravity, and friction pointed sideways to the inside (toward the center) at the contact point. The resultant of gravity and centrifugal force pointed diagonally down, and its line of action lay along the line joining the center of gravity and the contact point (the bike frame), passing through the contact point.
- v = 15.0 m/s、R = 20 m(または v = 8.0 m/s、R = 5 m)のとき、何が起こりましたか。What happened at v = 15.0 m/s and R = 20 m (or v = 8.0 m/s and R = 5 m)?→ 必要な摩擦係数がそれぞれ μ = 1.15、1.31 となって上限 0.8 をこえ、「スリップ! The needed friction coefficient became μ = 1.15 and 1.31 respectively, over the 0.8 limit; the display said "Slip! Sliding outward", and the tires slid so the bike drifted outside the circle.
What happened when you set θ by hand to 21.0°, 10.0° and 30.0°?→ 21.0° では差 +2.9° で「±5°以内はハンドルで修正可」となり倒れなかった。 At 21.0°, the difference was +2.9°, shown as "within ±5°, steering fixes it", and the bike did not fall. At 10.0°, the difference was −8.1° (too little lean), so it fell outward and moved outside the path in the top view. At 30.0°, the difference was +11.9° (too much lean), so it fell inward and moved inside the path.
Think further
Why does the bike not fall when the lean angle satisfies tanθ = v²/(gR)? Explain using the force diagram.→ 重心には下向きに mg、外向きに mv²/R(遠心力)がはたらき、合力の向きは鉛直から tanθ = (mv²/R)/(mg) = v²/(gR) の角だけ外側にかたむく。 At the center of gravity, mg acts downward and mv²/R (centrifugal force) acts outward, so the resultant tilts outward from the vertical by an angle with tanθ = (mv²/R)/(mg) = v²/(gR). Leaning the bike inward by this angle makes the resultant's line of action pass through the contact point, so there is no turning effect (moment) on the bike and it does not fall.
Why must you slow down on sharp curves or on wet roads?→ カーブを曲がるのに必要な摩擦は μ = v²/(gR) で、速いほど、半径が小さいほど大きくなる。 The friction needed to turn is μ = v²/(gR), which grows with speed and with smaller radius. A wet road lowers the maximum friction available, so unless you reduce v to keep the needed μ below that limit, the tires slip outward.
Common misconceptions
On a curve you lean outward to resist the centrifugal force." To avoid falling, you must lean inward so the resultant of gravity and centrifugal force passes through the contact point.
The more you lean, the more stable the turn." Leaning too much (more than 5° over the ideal) also makes the bike fall inward; there is a right angle decided by speed and radius.

Make clear that centrifugal force is an apparent force seen by someone turning with the bike; seen from the ground, the inward friction force mv²/R acts as the centripetal force that produces the circular motion. The model treats the rider and bike as a single rigid body and ignores tire width, fine steering motions and gyroscopic effects. The "within ±5°, steering fixes it" threshold and the 0.8 friction limit are values chosen for illustration.
