Grime Roll-Up Lab
Students understand that when soap molecules push their hydrophobic tails into an oil stain and cover its surface, the stain lifts off the fiber and rolls up into a ball, then the water flow pulls it away as a micelle-like particle spread in the water, and that water alone cannot remove the stain.

Predict (before you touch anything)
If you wash with water only, without soap, but stir very hard, do you think the oil stain on the fiber will come off?💡 油と水はなじむでしょうか。 Do oil and water mix? Think about comparing the force holding the oil on the fiber with the force of the water flow.
When a soap molecule attaches to the oil stain, which part do you think it pushes into the oil: the red head (hydrophilic) or the zigzag tail (hydrophobic)?💡 画面の凡例で、それぞれが何に引かれると書かれているか確かめましょう。Check the legend on the screen to see what each part is attracted to.
Try it
In the starting state (① Stirring 50, ② Water temp 30℃), the wash is already playing. For about 10 seconds, watch items ① to ④ in the "Status" panel advance in order, and record how the coverage, the contact angle θ, and the adhesion value change.
After the stain comes off, check which part lines the outside of the micelle: the hydrophilic heads (red) or the hydrophobic tails.
Press "⏪ Wash: Rewind" to go back to the start, set ① Stirring to 100 and ② Water temp to 60℃, and press "▶ Wash: Play". Then repeat with 20 and 10℃, and compare the detach times in the "Log".
Check "Water only", set ① Stirring to 100 and ② Water temp to 60℃, watch for about 20 seconds, and check the "Status" panel and the adhesion and flow values.
Check
Under the starting conditions (50 / 30℃), how did the coverage, the contact angle θ and the adhesion change? After how many seconds did the stain come off?→ 被覆率は 0% → 約60%(約6秒)→ 100% と増え、接触角 θ は 46° から 120° 程度まで大きくなって汚れが丸くなった。 Coverage rose from 0% to about 60% (at about 6 s) and then to 100%, and the contact angle θ grew from 46° to about 120° as the stain balled up. Adhesion kept dropping from about 90, and when it fell below the flow force (about 2-3), the stain detached at about 8 s and became a micelle.
Which way were the soap molecules facing around the detached oil particle?→ 尾(疎水基)が油の中に差し込まれ、赤い頭(親水基)がすべて外側の水の方を向いて粒を囲んでいた。 The tails (hydrophobic) were pushed into the oil, and the red heads (hydrophilic) all faced outward toward the water, surrounding the particle. No head ever went into the oil.
How did the time until detachment change when you changed the stirring and the water temperature?→ 100 / 60℃ では約5秒、50 / 30℃ では約8秒、20 / 10℃ では約22秒かかった。 It took about 5 s at 100 / 60℃, about 8 s at 50 / 30℃, and about 22 s at 20 / 10℃. The stronger the stirring and the warmer the water, the sooner the stain came off.
With "Water only" at Stirring 100 and 60℃, what happened to the stain?→ 「④剥離・分散:はがれない」のままで、接触角は 46° のまま汚れが変形するだけだった。 The panel stayed at "④ Detach & disperse: stays stuck", and the stain only bent while θ stayed at 46°. Adhesion was about 80-90, much larger than the flow force (about 7-10).
Think further
Why does the stain lift off the fiber and round up when soap molecules cover its surface?→ せっけん分子は油の表面と繊維の表面に並び、外側に親水基を向けるので、どちらの表面も水になじみやすくなる。 Soap molecules line both the oil surface and the fiber surface with their hydrophilic heads facing out, so both surfaces become easier for water to wet. Water then works its way between the oil and the fiber, the oil reduces its contact area and balls up (the contact angle grows), and its adhesion becomes weaker.
Warm water makes soap molecules move faster so they adsorb onto the stain sooner, and strong agitation makes the flow force larger so it beats the weakened adhesion sooner. With water alone, though, adhesion does not drop however hard you stir, so soap is still needed.
Common misconceptions
Scrubbing or stirring hard enough removes oil stains with water alone." With water only, the adhesion stays much larger than the flow force, so the stain just bends and does not come off.
Soap removes oil by dissolving it." Soap molecules cover the oil surface so it comes off the fiber more easily, then wrap the detached oil into micelles that spread through the water.

Adhesion is computed from Young's equation and the work of adhesion Wa = γ(oil-water)(1+cosθ), and detachment is decided by comparing it with the flow force; this is a simplified model with arbitrary units. For middle school, it is enough for students to picture soap getting between the oil and the fiber, lifting the stain, and wrapping it; treat the contact angle and surface tension as enrichment. "⏪ Wash: Rewind" resets the scene but keeps the slider values.
