Why a Bike Stays Up: Self-Stability Simulation

Why a Bike Stays Up: Self-Stability Simulation 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that when a moving bicycle leans, effects such as trail (the front-wheel contact point lying behind the steering axis) make the front wheel steer toward the lean, and the centrifugal effect of turning that way lifts the bike back up, so at suitable speeds it resists falling even without a rider (self-stability), and that this stability depends on speed and head angle.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When a moving bicycle leans to the right, which way should the front wheel turn to stop it from falling: right or left?💡 カーブを曲がるとき、乗っている人は外側と内側のどちらへ押されるように感じるでしょうか。When you go around a curve, which way do you feel pushed: toward the outside or the inside of the curve?
Do you think a bicycle is harder to tip over when it goes slowly or when it goes fast?💡 曲がるときに車体を起こすはたらきは、速さによってどう変わるでしょうか。How does the effect that lifts the bike during a turn change with speed?

Keeping "Speed" at 15 km/h, "Head angle (from ground)" at 72° and "Push size" at medium (6.0°), press "Give a push". Watch whether "Lean" and "Steer" in the readout are L or R, the ①–④ flow display, the blue (lean φ) and orange (steer δ) lines in the time graph, and the yellow front-wheel track in the top view.
Set "Speed" to 5 km/h and press "Reset" (a push is given automatically right after a reset), and record the status and the message. Do the same at 10 km/h and 40 km/h, and compare with the colored bar "Stability at each speed".
Return "Speed" to 15 km/h, change "Head angle (from ground)" from 72° → 78° → 86°, read the "Trail" value each time, press "Reset" and record the result.
With "Head angle (from ground)" at 78°, set "Speed" to 10 km/h and then 15 km/h, pressing "Reset" each time, and confirm that with the same head angle the result depends on speed.

Check

When the push made the bike lean right, which way did the front wheel turn, and which way did the bike turn?→ 前輪も右へ切れ、自転車は右(傾いた側)へ曲がった。 The front wheel also turned right, and the bike turned right (toward the lean). The message read "Bike leans right → front wheel also turns right, so the bike turns right → centrifugal effect lifts it up", and in the time graph the orange steer line followed the blue lean line in the same direction with a short delay. At 15 km/h a lean of about 6° returned to near 0° within a few seconds and the status went back to "Self-stable".
What happened at 5 km/h, 10 km/h and 40 km/h?→ 5 km/h At 5 km/h the bike "Fell over" even though the front wheel turned a lot (up to about 40°), with the message "Too slow to correct in time". At 10 km/h (head angle 72°) it recovered. At 40 km/h it did not fall but recovered slowly while swaying left and right, matching the "Stable, but slow recovery" color on the bar.
(15 km/h)。At 15 km/h, how did the trail and the result change for head angles of 72°, 78° and 86°?→ トレールは 72° で 68 mm、78° で 31 mm、86° で 0 mm と、ヘッド角が 90° に近づくほど小さくなった。 The trail was 68 mm at 72°, 31 mm at 78° and 0 mm at 86°, getting smaller as the head angle approached 90°. At 72° and 78° the bike recovered (more slowly at 78°), but at 86° the front wheel hardly turned (about 10°) and it "Fell over", with the message "The trail is too small".
With a head angle of 78°, how did 10 km/h and 15 km/h compare?→ 10 km/h At 10 km/h it went from "Recovering (too weak, falling)" to falling over, but at 15 km/h it recovered. With a smaller trail, a higher speed is needed for self-stability (about 14 km/h or more in this model).

Think further

Why does turning toward the lean lift the bike back up?→ 曲がっている自転車には、カーブの外側へ向かう遠心効果(慣性による見かけの力)がはたらく。 A turning bicycle feels a centrifugal effect (an apparent force from inertia) toward the outside of the curve. When it turns toward the lean, this effect pushes the center of mass outward, opposite to the lean, which cancels the tipping caused by gravity and lifts the bike up. The centrifugal effect is proportional to the square of the speed, so at low speed even a large steer is not enough and the bike falls.
What do the front casters of a shopping cart, which swing to trail behind their pivots, have in common with a bicycle's trail?→ どちらも車輪の接地点が回転軸(操舵軸)より後ろにあるため、地面から受ける力で車輪が自然に向きを変える。 In both, the wheel's contact point lies behind the pivot (steering) axis, so forces from the ground swing the wheel around by themselves. On a bicycle this makes the front wheel steer toward the lean when the bike leans. With zero trail this automatic steering disappears, and in the simulation the bike could not recover at a head angle of 86°.

This is a simplified model that assumes the front-wheel steer angle follows the lean with a short delay; its coefficients and range of stable speeds do not match full bicycle dynamics (the Whipple model). Trail and gyroscopic effects are combined into coefficients, so the model cannot separate how much each one contributes. Pressing "Reset" automatically gives a push about a second later, so have students keep the same "Push size" when comparing runs.
