Tidal Force Vector Field — Why Two High Tides?

目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that the tidal force, the Moon's pull at each point of the Earth minus its pull at the Earth's center, points outward on both the near and far sides and inward at the sides 90° away, which is why there are two high tides, and that tidal force weakens roughly as the inverse cube of distance, faster than gravity (inverse square).

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you draw the Moon's gravity at many points on the Earth, every arrow points toward the Moon. Could the sea on the far side still end up being pushed away from the Moon?💡 地球そのものも月に引かれて動いています。 The Earth itself is also being pulled toward the Moon. Compared with the Earth's center, is the far-side sea pulled more strongly or more weakly?
If the distance to the Moon were halved, by what factor do you think the Moon's gravity would grow, and by what factor would the tide-raising force grow?💡 潮を起こす力は「近い側と遠い側での引力の差」です。 The tide-raising force is the difference in pull between the near and far sides. Does a difference change at the same rate as the pull itself?

Try it

Press "Pause" to stop the animation, press "① Moon's gravity" and check that the blue arrows (gravity at each point) all point toward the Moon and are longer nearer the Moon. Then switch to "② Tidal force" and "①+②" and compare the directions of the red arrows.
With "(2) Earth–Moon distance" at 60 R, record the "Tidal force (Moon): near / far / side" and "Gravity (Moon): near : center : far" values in the readout box.
Uncheck "Add the Sun's tidal force", move "(2) Earth–Moon distance" from 60 R → 30 R → 10 R, and record the "vs 60R: center gravity ×…" and "tidal force ×…" values.
Set the distance to 10 R and press the "Scale: auto (see shape)" button so it reads "Scale: fixed (10R base)". Then move the Moon out to 20 R and 40 R, and watch the arrow lengths and the dots on the "Strength (10R=1)" graph at the lower left.
Return the distance to 60 R and the scale to auto, and check "Add the Sun's tidal force". Move "(3) Sun phase" from 0° → 90° → 180°, and record the spring/neap label, the "Tidal range ×…" value and the shape of the ocean bulge.

Check

Which way did the tidal force (red arrows) point at the near point, the far point and the sides, and how large was it?→ 近点は月の方向へ外向き(+1.000)、遠点は月と反対方向へ外向き(+0.951)でほぼ同じ大きさ。 At the near point it points outward toward the Moon (+1.000); at the far point it points outward away from the Moon (+0.951), almost the same size. At the sides it points inward toward the Earth's center at −0.487, about half the outward value. So there are two bulges, on the near and far sides.
At 60 R, how much did the Moon's gravity differ between the near point, the center and the far point?→ 近点 : 中心 : 遠点 = 1.034 : 1 : 0.967 で、差は数%しかない。 Near : center : far = 1.034 : 1 : 0.967, a difference of only a few percent. Gravity points toward the Moon everywhere, but this small difference is what makes the tidal force.
When the Moon was brought from 60 R to 30 R and 10 R, by what factor did the gravity at the center and the tidal force change?→ 30 R At 30 R: center gravity ×4.000, tidal force ×8.209. At 10 R: gravity ×36.000, tidal force ×247.018. Gravity changes as (60/d)² and tidal force roughly as (60/d)³, so tidal force changes much more steeply with distance. With the fixed scale, the red arrows shrank faster than the blue ones as the Moon moved away.
What was the tidal range at Sun phases of 0°, 90° and 180°?→ 0°(朔・新月)と 180°(望・満月)では「大潮」で干満差 ×1.46、90°(直角)では「小潮」で ×0.54 だった。 At 0° (new moon) and 180° (full moon) it showed "Spring tide" with Tidal range ×1.46; at 90° (quarter) it showed "Neap tide" with ×0.54. The Sun's tidal force is 46% of the Moon's, so lined up they give 1 + 0.46 and at right angles 1 − 0.46.

Think further

Why do we subtract the gravity at the Earth's center when thinking about tidal force?→ 地球全体は中心での引力によって月の方へ加速(落下)している。 The whole Earth is accelerating (falling) toward the Moon because of the gravity at its center. We want to know how the sea moves relative to the Earth, so we subtract this shared acceleration; what is left moves the sea relative to the Earth. The near side is pulled more than the center, toward the Moon; the far side is pulled less and gets left behind, so both sides end up pointing outward.
The Sun's gravitational pull on the Earth is about 180 times the Moon's, so why is its tidal force only 46% of the Moon's?→ 潮汐力は引力そのものではなく地球の両側での引力の差で、距離のほぼ3乗に反比例する。 Tidal force is not the pull itself but the difference in pull across the Earth, which falls off roughly as the inverse cube of distance. The Sun is about 390 times farther than the Moon, so although its pull is large it barely changes across the Earth's diameter, and the difference is small. The simulation shows that tidal force changes much more steeply with distance than gravity does.

Arrow lengths are proportional to the values calculated at each point, but gravity and tidal force are drawn with different exaggeration factors (tidal force is only about 2R/d of gravity), so warn students not to compare their lengths directly. Use "Scale: fixed (10R base)" to compare how they weaken with distance. The Sun's tidal force is fixed at 46% of the Moon's at 60 R and does not change when the Moon's distance is changed. Sizes and distances are schematic, and the Sun's gravity vectors themselves are not shown.
