Tides and the Pull of the Moon and Sun

Tides and the Pull of the Moon and Sun 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that tides are caused not by the pull of the Moon and Sun itself but by the difference in pull (tidal force), so the sea bulges in two places, toward the Moon and on the opposite side, giving spring tides at new and full moon when the Moon and Sun line up and neap tides at first and last quarter when they are at right angles.

Predict (before you touch anything)

If the Moon pulls on the sea, do you think the sea bulges only on the side of the Earth facing the Moon, or somewhere else as well?💡 月の引力は距離が近いほど強くなります。 The Moon's pull is stronger the closer you are. How does the pull differ for the sea on the near side, the Earth's center, and the sea on the far side?
At which moon phase do you think the difference between high and low tide is largest: new moon, first quarter, full moon, or last quarter?💡 太陽も月より弱いながら潮を起こします。 The Sun also raises tides, though more weakly than the Moon. In what arrangement would the two effects line up in the same direction?

Try it

Press "Pause" to stop the motion and set the "Moon–Sun angle" slider to 0°. In the top view, check that the pale blue water layer around the Earth bulges in two places, toward the Moon and on the opposite side, and that the top-left display reads "New Moon", "Spring tide" and "Range ×2.70 (vs neap)".
Move the "Moon–Sun angle" to 90° → 180° → 270°, and each time record the moon phase, the spring/neap label, the range value, the direction and size of the bulges, and which side of the Moon is lit.
In the upper-right zoom graph (3 days), count the ▲high and ▼low markers and read how many high tides come in one day and how many days there are from one high tide to the next.
Return the "Moon–Sun angle" to 0°, then move the "Time" slider from 0 days to about 6.8, 13.7 and 20.5 days. Compare how the angle and the spring/neap label change with the envelope (dashed line) in the lower-right full graph (0–27.3 days).
Press "Play" and, while changing the "Speed" slider, check that each time the observer (red dot) is carried by the Earth's rotation through one of the two bulges, the red dot on the tide graph passes a peak.

Check

How many bulges did the sea form, and where?→ 2つ。 Two: one toward the Moon and one on the exact opposite side (the side farthest from the Moon). When the angle was changed to move the Moon, the axis of the bulges turned to follow the Moon.
At angles of 0°, 90°, 180° and 270°, what were the moon phase, the spring/neap label and the range value?→ 0°=新月・大潮(潮差 ×2.70)、90°=上弦・小潮(×1.00)、180°=満月・大潮(×2.70)、270°=下弦・小潮(×1.00)。 0° = New Moon, Spring tide (Range ×2.70); 90° = First Quarter, Neap tide (×1.00); 180° = Full Moon, Spring tide (×2.70); 270° = Last Quarter, Neap tide (×1.00). The amplitude read 1.46 at spring tide and 0.54 at neap tide.
How many high tides were there per day, and how far apart were they?→ 1日に約2回。 About twice a day. In the zoom graph the high tides were about 0.52 days (about 12 h 25 min) apart, a little longer than half a day, because the Moon moves a little farther along its orbit, so the observer needs extra time to reach the bulge again.
As time went on, how often did spring and neap tides repeat?→ 角度差 0° から約 6.8 日で 90°(小潮)、約 13.7 日で 180°(大潮)、約 20.5 日で 270°(小潮)になった。 Starting from 0°, the angle reached 90° (neap) at about 6.8 days, 180° (spring) at about 13.7 days and 270° (neap) at about 20.5 days. Spring tides repeat about every two weeks (new and full moon), and the full graph's amplitude grew and shrank twice.

Think further

Why does the sea bulge even on the side farthest from the Moon?→ 月の引力は近いほど強いので、月側の海は地球の中心より強く、遠い側の海は地球の中心より弱く引かれる。 The Moon's pull is stronger closer to it, so the near-side sea is pulled more than the Earth's center and the far-side sea is pulled less. Relative to the Earth's center, the near-side water is drawn toward the Moon and the far-side water is left behind, away from the Moon; this difference is the tidal force. The yellow arrows in the diagram point outward on both sides.
The Sun's pull on the Earth is far stronger than the Moon's, so why is its tide-raising force only about 0.46 times the Moon's?→ 潮を起こすのは引力の大きさではなく、地球の近い側と遠い側での引力の差だから。 Tides are raised not by the size of the pull but by the difference in pull between the near and far sides of the Earth. The Sun is so far away that its pull hardly changes across the Earth's diameter, so the difference (tidal force) is small. Tidal force is roughly proportional to mass divided by distance cubed.

This is an equilibrium-tide model: the whole Earth is covered by ocean and the sea responds instantly. Real tides are shaped by continents and the sea floor, so high tide is offset from the Moon's passage and spring tides often lag new and full moon by one or two days. Distances and sizes are exaggerated, and the Moon is simplified to go once around relative to the Sun direction in 27.3 days (the real synodic month is about 29.5 days). The spring-to-neap range ratio here is 1.46/0.54 ≈ 2.7, which matches the rule of thumb of roughly 3 to 1.
