Periscope Secrets: Total Internal Reflection in a Prism

中1 · 物理単元: 光の反射・屈折(全反射、凸レンズの像)Periscope Secrets: Total Internal Reflection in a Prism 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that light going from glass into air is totally reflected (100% bounces back) when its angle of incidence on the surface is larger than the critical angle, which is why a periscope with right-angle prisms gives a brighter view than one with mirrors.

Predict (before you touch anything)

When light is turned twice inside a periscope, which do you think delivers brighter light to the eye: plane mirrors or right-angle glass prisms?💡 鏡は当たった光をすべてはね返しているでしょうか。 Does a mirror really bounce back all the light that hits it? Think about what happens if even a little light escapes through the back.
If you keep lowering the refractive index n of the glass, do you think the light will keep bouncing back completely at the prism's slanted face?💡 全反射が起こる条件「入射角 > 臨界角」の、臨界角のほうが n によって変わります。In the condition for total internal reflection, "angle of incidence > critical angle", it is the critical angle that depends on n.

Try it

In the starting state (① Refractive index of glass n = 1.50, ② Light tilt α = 0.0° (level)), compare the light paths (level → down → level) of "① Right-angle prisms" on the left and "② Plane mirrors (to compare)" on the right, and read the "Brightness at eye" values.
Lower the "① Refractive index of glass n" slider 1.50 → 1.42 → 1.41 → 1.30, and each time record the "Critical angle θc", the "Incidence angle on slanted face θi", and whether total internal reflection is YES or NO.
At n = 1.30, observe the light escaping from the prism's slanted face ("Leak") and the brightness value at the eye.
Set n back to 1.50 and move "② Light tilt α" 0° → −4.5° → −5.0° → −15° (up), checking how θi and the YES/NO for total internal reflection change. Finally try +15° (down) as well.

Check

In the starting state, what was the brightness at the eye for the prisms and for the mirrors? Why are the mirrors darker?→ プリズムは100%、鏡は72%でした。 The prisms gave 100% and the mirrors 72%. Each mirror reflects only 85% per bounce and the other 15% escapes through the back, so after two bounces only 0.85 × 0.85 ≈ 72% is left.
How did the critical angle change as n was lowered? At what n did total internal reflection stop (with α = 0°)?→ n The smaller n is, the larger the critical angle (41.8° at n = 1.50, 44.8° at 1.42, 45.2° at 1.41). The incidence angle on the slanted face stays at 45.0°, so once the critical angle exceeds 45° at n = 1.41, total internal reflection becomes NO.
At n = 1.30, what happened to the brightness at the eye on the prism side?→ 上の斜面で光の大部分(約91%)が外へ漏れてしまい、目に届く明るさは約0.9%まで下がりました。 Most of the light (about 91%) leaks out at the upper slanted face, and the brightness at the eye falls to about 0.9%, far darker than the mirrors' 72%.
With n = 1.50, at what upward tilt did total internal reflection stop? What happened with a downward tilt (+15°)?→ α = −4.5° では θi = 42.0° で全反射が成立していましたが、−5.0° で θi = 41.7° となり臨界角 41.8° を下回って「不成立」になり、明るさは約43%に落ちました。 At α = −4.5°, θi = 42.0° and total internal reflection still held, but at −5.0°, θi = 41.7° dropped below the critical angle of 41.8°, so it became NO and the brightness fell to about 43%. At +15°, θi = 54.9° is larger, so total internal reflection holds and it stays at 100%.

Think further

Total internal reflection only happens when light tries to go from glass into air, not from air into glass. When light leaves glass for air, the angle of refraction is larger than the angle of incidence. As the incidence angle grows, the refraction angle reaches 90°, and beyond that there is no way into the air, so all the light is reflected. Going from air into glass, the refraction angle is smaller than the incidence angle, so the light can always enter.
Name one everyday thing that uses total internal reflection and explain how it works.→ 例:光ファイバー。 Example: optical fiber. Light inside a thin glass strand keeps hitting the inner surface at angles larger than the critical angle, so it is totally reflected again and again and travels far without leaking. Prisms in binoculars use the same idea.

For lower secondary students it is enough to cover "total internal reflection when angle of incidence > critical angle"; the arcsin(1/n) formula can be skipped. The model assumes the mirror reflects 85% per bounce and ignores small reflection losses at the prism's entry and exit faces. When there is no total reflection, the brightness is calculated with the Fresnel equations, and the escaping ray is drawn following Snell's law.
