How Rainbows Form (Refraction and Dispersion)
Students understand that a rainbow forms because sunlight is refracted, reflected once, and refracted again inside raindrops, with each color bending by a different amount (dispersion), so it appears as an arc of radius about 42° around the antisolar point with red outside and violet inside, and cannot be seen when the sun is higher than about 42°.

Predict (before you touch anything)
Do you see a rainbow in the part of the sky where the sun is, or in the part of the sky with the sun behind you?💡 光は雨粒の中で一度はね返ってから出てきます。 Light bounces once inside the raindrop before it comes out. Which way does that send the light?
Which do you think is better for seeing a rainbow: late afternoon, or around noon in summer?💡 虹の中心は太陽の真裏の点です。 The center of a rainbow is the point directly opposite the sun. When the sun rises higher, where does that point move?
Try it
In the starting state ("(a) Sun altitude" h = 20°, "(b) Dispersion strength" Δn = 0.0120), watch the "Close-up of a drop" on the right: white light goes through "① In: refraction", "② One reflection", and "③ Out: refraction" and separates by color. Use "Pause" to freeze it if needed.
In the scene on the left, check which color is on the outside and which is on the inside of the arc, and record the red and violet values of "Rainbow angular radius" below (about 42.37° and 40.65°).
Move the "(a) Sun altitude" slider through 0° → 20° → 40° → 45° → 60°, and record how the arc's height, the "Height of rainbow top" value, and the "Rainbow visible / Rainbow below the horizon (not visible)" message change.
Return the sun altitude to 20°, then lower the "(b) Dispersion strength" slider from 0.0120 → 0.0060 → 0. Watch how the spread of the rays in the close-up and the "band width" value of the rainbow change.
Set Δn back to 0.0120 and press the "Close-up angles: ×6 exaggerated" button to switch to "true scale", and compare how small the real angle differences between colors are.
Check
In the close-up of the drop, which color bent the most? How many times did the light reflect inside the drop?→ 紫が最も大きく曲がった(屈折率が赤 1.331 より紫 1.343 の方が大きいため)。 Violet bent the most, because water's refractive index is larger for violet (1.343) than for red (1.331). In the primary rainbow, light reflects only once at the back of the drop and is refracted twice, once going in and once coming out.
Which colors were on the outside and inside of the rainbow, and what was its angular radius?→ 外側が赤、内側が紫。 Red was on the outside and violet on the inside. The angular radius was about 42.4° for red and about 40.6° for violet, so the band is about 1.7° wide. The rainbow is part of a circle centered on the antisolar point.
What happened to the rainbow when you raised the sun altitude? At about what angle did it disappear?→ 太陽が高くなるほど反太陽点が地平線の下に沈み、虹は低く小さな弧になった。 As the sun rose, the antisolar point sank below the horizon and the rainbow became a lower, smaller arc. The height of the rainbow top was 42.4° at h = 0°, 22.4° at 20°, and 2.4° at 40°; at 45° it was −2.6° and the message "Rainbow below the horizon (not visible)" appeared. It disappears when the sun is higher than about 42°.
When you made the dispersion strength Δn smaller, how did the close-up and the rainbow band change?→ 拡大図の光線の広がりが小さくなり、虹の帯の幅も 1.72°(Δn = 0.012)→ 0.86°(Δn = 0.006)→ 0.00°(Δn = 0)と細くなった。 The spread of the rays in the close-up became smaller, and the band width shrank from 1.72° (Δn = 0.012) to 0.86° (Δn = 0.006) to 0.00° (Δn = 0). At Δn = 0 the light does not separate into colors and makes a single whitish arc (angular radius about 41.5°).
Think further
Each raindrop sends out all the colors, yet any one spot of the rainbow looks like a single color. Each color leaves at a slightly different angle, so from a raindrop at a given position only the color matching that angle reaches the observer's eye. Red comes from drops at about 42°, violet from drops at about 40.6°, so different drops at different heights supply different colors.
If you look down from an airplane at rainy air, or spray water from a hose with the sun behind you, what shape of rainbow could you see?→ 虹は反太陽点を中心とする半径約42°の円なので、地平線(地面)にさえぎられなければ丸い円の虹が見える。 A rainbow is a circle of radius about 42° around the antisolar point, so if the horizon (the ground) does not block it, you can see a full circular rainbow. On the ground, the part below the horizon is hidden, so we usually see only an arc.
Common misconceptions
A rainbow is an object at a fixed place in the sky." A rainbow is an effect of the angles between the observer, the sun, and the raindrops; if the observer moves, the rainbow moves too, and different people see light from different drops.
Violet bends the most, so it should be on the outside of the rainbow." In the primary rainbow the light is reflected back, so violet leaves at a smaller angle from the antisolar point (about 40.6°) and is on the inside, while red (about 42.4°) is on the outside.

At first the close-up exaggerates the angle differences between colors by ×6, so it helps to also show the "true scale" view using the button. The model shows only the primary rainbow (one reflection), not the secondary bow, and draws each color only along its minimum-deviation (Descartes) ray, so effects such as the brighter sky inside the bow are not shown. The refractive index is approximated with five colors from red 1.331 to violet 1.343.
