Quantum Tunneling: A Gaussian Wave Packet Through a Square Barrier
Students understand that when a Gaussian wave packet hits a square barrier it splits into reflected and transmitted parts, that even when E0 < V0 some of it passes through via the evanescent wave inside the barrier (tunneling), that the transmission probability T falls off exponentially as V0 or the width L increases, and that even when E0 > V0 part of the packet is reflected.

Predict (before you touch anything)
A wave packet with center energy E0 = 1.00 hits a barrier of height V0 = 1.30 (higher than E0). A classical ball would bounce back completely. Do you think anything will appear on the far side of the barrier for a quantum wave packet?💡 シュレーディンガー方程式では、E < V の領域でも波動関数はすぐにゼロにはならず、ある減り方で減衰します。In the Schrödinger equation, the wave function does not drop to zero immediately where E < V; it decays in a certain way.
On the other hand, when E0 is larger than V0, do you think the whole packet will pass the barrier?💡 波は、媒質(ここではポテンシャル)が急に変わる境界で一部が反射される性質があります。Waves tend to partly reflect wherever the medium (here, the potential) changes suddenly.
Try it
In the starting state ("Center energy E0" 1.00, "Barrier height V0" 1.30, "Barrier width L" 2.0), press "Reset" and watch |ψ|² (top) and Re ψ (bottom) split left and right when they hit the barrier. When "(split done)" appears, record Reflected R, Transmitted T, Theory T (k avg) and R+T+in.
Use the view button ("Full view" ⇔ "Near barrier") to zoom in near the barrier, and press the "T side ×1" button to switch to ×10 and ×100, so you can see Re ψ decaying without oscillating inside the barrier and the small transmitted packet more clearly.
Keeping E0 = 1.00 and V0 = 1.30, change "Barrier width L" through 1.0 → 2.0 → 3.0 → 4.0 and record T and "Decay e^(−2κL)" after the split is done each time.
Return L to 2.0 and lower "Barrier height V0" through 3.00, 2.00, 1.30, 1.00, 0.50 and 0. Record the V0/E0 readout (>1 / =1 / <1) and how T and R change.
Check
At E0 = 1.00, V0 = 1.30 and L = 2.0, what were R and T after the split? Did they match the theory?→ R ≈ 0.866、T ≈ 0.133 で、理論T(k平均)= 0.1344 とほぼ一致した。 R ≈ 0.866 and T ≈ 0.133, almost the same as Theory T (k avg) = 0.1344. Even though E0 < V0, about 13% appeared beyond the barrier (tunneling).
How did T change as the barrier width L was increased?→ 単調に減少した。 It decreased steadily: about 0.49 at L = 1.0, 0.13 at 2.0, 0.038 at 3.0 and 0.015 at 4.0. Each extra unit of L cut T by a large factor, an exponential decrease with the same trend as "Decay e^(−2κL)".
When V0 was lowered so that V0/E0 became less than 1, what happened to R and T?→ V0 = 3.00 で T ≈ 0.0013、2.00 で 0.015、1.30 で 0.13、1.00 で 0.34 と増え、V0 = 0.50(V0/E0 = 0.50 <1)では T ≈ 0.89 になったが、R ≈ 0.11 の反射が残った。 T grew from about 0.0013 at V0 = 3.00 to 0.015 at 2.00, 0.13 at 1.30 and 0.34 at 1.00, reaching about 0.89 at V0 = 0.50 (V0/E0 = 0.50 <1), but a reflection of R ≈ 0.11 remained. Only at V0 = 0 did R become almost 0.
What was the value of R+T+in during the run?→ 常にほぼ 1 だった(衝突中は 1.000000、分離完了時でも約 0.9996、偏差 −4.4×10⁻⁴ 程度)。 It stayed almost exactly 1 (1.000000 during the collision and about 0.9996 when the split was done, an error of about −4.4×10⁻⁴). This shows that total probability is conserved.
Think further
Why does the tunneling probability decrease exponentially with the barrier width and height?→ E < V Inside a barrier where E < V the wave function does not oscillate but becomes an evanescent wave decaying like e^(−κx), with κ = √(2m(V0−E))/ħ. The amplitude reaching the far side is about e^(−κL) and the probability is its square, about e^(−2κL), so it falls exponentially as L grows or as V0 rises (making κ larger).
Where is tunneling used in nature or technology? And why do we never see everyday balls tunnel?→ α崩壊、太陽内部の核融合、走査型トンネル顕微鏡(STM)、フラッシュメモリやトンネルダイオードなどで重要である。 It matters in alpha decay, nuclear fusion in the Sun, the scanning tunneling microscope (STM), flash memory and tunnel diodes. A ball has a huge mass, so κ = √(2m(V0−E))/ħ is enormous and e^(−2κL) is effectively zero.
Common misconceptions
If the energy is lower than the barrier, the probability is exactly zero and the particle can never get through." In quantum mechanics, the transmission probability is finite even for E0 < V0; it only becomes exponentially small as L or V0 grows.
If the energy is higher than the barrier, everything always gets through." Even when E0 > V0, part of the wave reflects at the potential steps (R ≈ 0.11 for E0 = 1.00, V0 = 0.50).

Units are ħ = m = 1, and the 1D Schrödinger equation is solved numerically. Absorbing layers at both ends remove the outgoing waves, and the absorbed probability is counted in R and T, so there is no false reflection from the edges. Because the packet has a spread of energies, "Theory T (k avg)" is the exact plane-wave result averaged over its momentum distribution, and "Decay e^(−2κL)" is only a rough guide (the prefactor is not 1). When E0 > V0, transmission resonances can make T go up and down with L.
