Light Clocks: Time Dilation and Length Contraction

大学・発展 · 物理単元: 特殊相対論(時間の遅れとローレンツ収縮)Light Clocks: Time Dilation and Length Contraction 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand, from the geometry of a light clock, that because the speed of light c is the same in every inertial frame, a moving light clock's light path becomes a longer diagonal so each tick stretches to Δt = γΔt0 (time dilation), and a moving object shrinks to L = L0/γ only along its direction of motion (length contraction).

Predict (before you touch anything)

When you watch from outside a light clock moving to the right at speed v, what path do you think the light bouncing between the mirrors will appear to follow? And how do you think the time for one round trip (one tick) will compare with a clock at rest?💡 光が下の鏡を出てから上の鏡に届くまでの間にも、鏡は右へ移動しています。 While the light travels from the bottom mirror to the top mirror, the mirrors themselves keep moving to the right. And the speed of light is c for every observer.
When a fast-moving spaceship is viewed from outside, do you think its length or height will look different? If something changes, which direction's size would it be?💡 運動の向きと、それに垂直な向きを分けて考えてみましょう。Think separately about the direction of motion and the direction perpendicular to it.

In the starting state ("① Relative speed v/c" = 0.60, "② height L0" = 0.60 light-s), press "Reset". Watch the photon in the left "Clock at rest" bounce straight up and down while the photon in the right "Moving clock (seen from outside) →" leaves a diagonal zigzag trail. After about 6 s, record the "tick rest / moving" counts in the readout panel.
Press the "v=0.8c" button, then "Reset". Read γ, Δt=γΔt0, the tick counts, and the "shift/diagonal" and "(cΔt/2)² = L0²+(vΔt/2)²" values in the panel.
Watch the left and right values of "Light on screen" while moving the "① Relative speed v/c" slider from 0 to 0.99, and check whether the photon's speed on screen changes (also try the "v=0.99c" button).
In the "Lorentz contraction" scene at the bottom, compare the solid line (L=L0/γ) and the dashed line (L0) on the spaceship, and the "L/L0" and "height" values in the panel, at v = 0, 0.8 and 0.99.
Set the "② height L0" slider to 1.00 light-s and check that Δt0 and Δt both get larger, but the ratio Δt/Δt0 = γ stays the same.

Check

At v = 0.6c, after about 6 s, how many ticks had the clock at rest and the moving clock each made?→ 静止側が4回、運動側が3回だった。 The clock at rest made 4 ticks and the moving clock 3. Since Δt0 = 1.200 s and Δt = γΔt0 = 1.250 × 1.200 = 1.500 s, the moving clock runs slow by a factor 1/γ = 0.8.
What values of γ and L = L0/γ were shown at v = 0.8c and v = 0.99c?→ v = 0.8c では γ = 1.667、Δt = 2.000 s、L/L0 = 0.600(L0 = 0.60 光秒なら L = 0.360 光秒)。 At v = 0.8c, γ = 1.667, Δt = 2.000 s and L/L0 = 0.600 (L = 0.360 light-s for L0 = 0.60 light-s). At v = 0.99c, γ = 7.089, Δt = 8.507 s and L/L0 = 0.141; the ship shrinks a lot but the animation keeps running.
When v was increased, what happened to the photon's speed on screen and to the length of the diagonal path?→ 「光の画面速度」は左右とも同じ値(この画面では約 253 px/s)のまま変わらなかった。 Light on screen" stayed at the same value for both clocks (about 253 px/s on this screen). What changed was the path length: at v = 0.8c the diagonal for half a tick was about 253 px and the horizontal shift about 202 px, so shift/diagonal = 0.800 = v/c, and (cΔt/2)² = L0² + (vΔt/2)² held.
When v was changed, what happened to the spaceship's length and its height?→ 進行方向の長さ(実線)だけが L0/γ に縮み、破線の L0 より短くなった。 Only the length along the motion (solid line) shrank to L0/γ, becoming shorter than the dashed L0. The height stayed fixed ("height 34px (fixed)") for every v. In the moving light clock, too, the mirrors get narrower but the gap between them (height L0) does not change.

Think further

Using the light-clock picture, explain why Δt = Δt0/√(1−v²/c²).→ 半周期の間に光は斜辺 cΔt/2 を進み、その間に時計は vΔt/2 だけ横に動き、縦の辺は L0 のまま。 In half a tick the light travels the hypotenuse cΔt/2 while the clock moves sideways by vΔt/2, and the vertical side stays L0. Solving the Pythagorean relation (cΔt/2)² = L0² + (vΔt/2)² for Δt and using Δt0 = 2L0/c gives Δt = Δt0/√(1−v²/c²) = γΔt0. Because the speed of light is fixed, a longer path simply takes more time.
For a person riding in the spaceship, does their own light clock seem to run slow? And how would the length of the station platform on the ground look to this person?→ 自分と一緒に動く時計は静止して見えるので、通常どおり Δt0 ごとに tick する(遅れて見えない)。 A clock moving with them is at rest in their frame, so it ticks normally every Δt0 (it does not seem slow). Since motion is relative, from the ship it is the ground clocks that run slow and the platform that looks shorter by 1/γ along the motion. Both observers are correct; this is the principle of relativity.

On screen, light is drawn at a fixed number of px per light-second, so the display is an extreme slow-motion version of real light. The tick counts compare both clocks using ground-frame time; the reverse view from the ship (where ground clocks run slow) is not shown, so cover it with the think questions. Also note that the contracted shape is the length measured at the same instant, which differs from what one would literally see with the eye (due to light travel-time effects).
