Plant Transpiration Simulator
Students understand that water absorbed by the root hairs travels up through the xylem to the leaves and leaves mainly through stomata on the underside as water vapor (transpiration), and that the amount changes with sunlight, humidity, and wind.
Open the simulation
Predict (before you touch anything)
Think about days when laundry dries quickly. How do you think sunlight, humidity, and wind must change for a plant's leaves to give off more water (more transpiration)?💡 水が水蒸気になって空気中へ出ていきやすいのは、まわりの空気がどんな状態のときでしょうか。Think about what condition the surrounding air must be in for water to escape into it easily as vapor.
What do you think happens to the stomata of a leaf when it gets dark? What would happen to transpiration then?💡 気孔は2つの孔辺細胞にはさまれたすきまです。 A stoma is the gap between two guard cells. Remember that it is also the doorway for the carbon dioxide needed for photosynthesis.
Try it
In the starting state (Sunlight 60, Humidity 50%, Wind speed 3.0 m/s, Transpiration (relative) about 20), follow the blue water particles from the soil water → root hairs → root → xylem (blue line) → leaf vein → mesophyll → stoma. Also check that no water particles enter the orange phloem.
Look at the "Cross-section (enlarged)" at the upper right. Check whether the stomata (guard cells) are on the "Upper epidermis" or the "Lower epidermis", and watch each water particle turn into pale "Water vapor" the moment it leaves a stoma.
Lower the "Sunlight" slider to 5 and watch the guard cells close and the Transpiration (relative) value. Then raise it to 30 → 60 → 100, recording how the stomata open and how the number changes.
With Sunlight at 100, move "Humidity" from 100% to 0% and record how Transpiration (relative) changes.
Next move "Wind speed" from 0 m/s to 10 m/s and record the change. Finally press "Pause" to freeze the scene and check how the water vapor from the stomata is carried away by the wind.
Check
On which side of the leaf in this model are the stomata? Where does the water vapor come out?→ 気孔は「下側表皮(裏)」にだけあり、上側表皮(表)にはありません。 The stomata are only in the "Lower epidermis"; there are none in the upper epidermis. Water vapor comes out only from the stomata on the underside, and no liquid water leaves the leaf surface.
What happened to the stomata and to Transpiration (relative) when Sunlight was set to 5?→ 孔辺細胞が閉じて気孔のすきまがなくなり、蒸散の相対強度は 0 になりました。 The guard cells closed, the opening disappeared, and Transpiration (relative) dropped to 0. Water particles wait inside the leaf and no vapor comes out. At Sunlight 30 it is only slight (about 3), and from 60 upward the stomata are wide open.
With Sunlight at 100, what was Transpiration (relative) at Humidity 100% and at 0%?→ 湿度 100% では 0、湿度 0% では約54でした(風速 3.0 m/s のとき)。 It was 0 at 100% humidity and about 54 at 0% humidity (with Wind speed 3.0 m/s). The higher the humidity, the less transpiration.
With Sunlight 100 and Humidity 0%, what was Transpiration (relative) at Wind speed 0 m/s and at 10 m/s?→ 風速 0 m/s では約35、10 m/s では 100 になりました。 It was about 35 at 0 m/s and 100 at 10 m/s. Stronger wind means more transpiration, and the water particles also move faster.
Think further
Why does the amount of water taken up by the roots increase when transpiration becomes more active?→ 葉から水蒸気として水が出ていくと、道管の中の水が上へ引き上げられ、そのぶん根毛から新しい水が吸収されるからです。 As water leaves the leaves as vapor, water in the xylem is pulled upward, and new water is absorbed by the root hairs to replace it. Transpiration drives the flow of water from roots to leaves (in the simulation, more transpiration means more and faster particles).
Why might it be an advantage for a plant to have most of its stomata on the underside of the leaf?→ 葉の裏側は直射日光が当たりにくく温度が上がりにくいので、必要以上に水が失われるのを防ぎやすいと考えられます。 The underside gets less direct sunlight and stays cooler, which helps prevent losing more water than necessary. The upper side is the surface that receives sunlight for photosynthesis.
Common misconceptions
The idea that water seeps out of the leaf surface and then evaporates. In fact, water leaves mainly through the stomata as water vapor.
The idea that water and food travel in the same tube. Water moves through the xylem, while food made in the leaves moves through the phloem.

Transpiration (relative) is a 0–100 index, not an actual amount in grams. The model draws stomata only on the underside, but in many real plants there are also a few on the upper side, so teach that most are on the underside. The model simplifies stomatal behavior: they are effectively closed below about Sunlight 25 and fully open from 60 upward. It pairs well with the hands-on experiment of coating leaves with petroleum jelly.
