Students understand, with real numbers, that in a horizontal Venturi tube the continuity equation v₂ = (A₁/A₂)v₁ makes the flow faster in the throat, that Bernoulli's principle then gives a pressure difference Δp = ½ρ(v₂² − v₁²), and that this difference can be measured as the level difference h = Δp/((ρₘ − ρ)g) in a U-tube manometer.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Of the standpipes at ① upstream, ② throat, and ③ downstream, where do you think the water level will be lowest? Also, if you double the upstream speed v₁, by what factor do you think the U-tube manometer level difference h will change?💡 くびれ部の速さを連続の式で考え、ベルヌーイの定理で圧力差が速さのどんな式になるか書いてみましょう。Find the speed in the throat with the continuity equation, then write the pressure difference from Bernoulli's principle as a formula in the speeds.
When measuring the same flow, if you replace the mercury in the manometer with a less dense liquid, do you think the level difference h will get larger or smaller?💡 同じ圧力差を支えるのに、重い液と軽い液ではどちらが高い液柱を必要とするでしょうか。 To balance the same pressure difference, does a heavy liquid or a light liquid need a taller column? Remember that the water in the pipe also sits on top of the manometer liquid.

In the starting state ("Upstream speed v₁" = 1.0 m/s, "Area ratio A₁/A₂" = 2.5, "Manometer liquid density ρₘ" = 13600 kg/m³ (Mercury)), observe the particle speed and streamline spacing in the throat, the static pressure p(x) graph and standpipe water levels at the top, and the v and p values in the table. Press "Pause" to stop and "Play" to resume.
Set "Upstream speed v₁" to 2.0 m/s and record by what factor v₂, Δp, and h changed.
  3. v₁ を 1.0 m/s に戻し、「断面積比 A₁/A₂」を 1.5 → 5.0 と変えて、表の ② くびれの A/A₁、v、p と、h の値を記録する。Return v₁ to 1.0 m/s, change "Area ratio A₁/A₂" to 1.5 → 5.0, and record A/A₁, v, and p for "② Throat" in the table and the value of h.
Return A₁/A₂ to 2.5, then press the "Mercury 13600", "CCl₄ 1590", and "Salt water 1200" buttons in turn and compare Δp and h.

Check

In the starting state, what were the speed and pressure in the throat and the U-tube level difference? What about ③ downstream?→ ② くびれでは A/A₁ = 0.400、v = 2.50 m/s、p = 117.375 kPa(低圧)で、Δp = ½×1000×(2.50² − 1.00²) = 2625 Pa、h = 2625/((13600 − 1000)×9.8) ≈ 2.13 cm だった。 At "② Throat", A/A₁ = 0.400, v = 2.50 m/s, and p = 117.375 kPa (low), giving Δp = ½×1000×(2.50² − 1.00²) = 2625 Pa and h = 2625/((13600 − 1000)×9.8) ≈ 2.13 cm. At ③ downstream the cross-section equals ①, so v = 1.00 m/s and p = 120.000 kPa again.
When v₁ went from 1.0 m/s to 2.0 m/s, by what factor did v₂, Δp, and h each change?→ v₂ は 2.50 → 5.00 m/s で2倍、Δp は 2625 → 10500 Pa で4倍、h は 2.13 → 8.50 cm で4倍になった。 v₂ went from 2.50 to 5.00 m/s (2 times), Δp from 2625 to 10500 Pa (4 times), and h from 2.13 to 8.50 cm (4 times), because Δp is proportional to the square of the speed.
What were the throat values with area ratio A₁/A₂ = 1.5 and 5.0?→ 1.5 では v₂ = 1.50 m/s、Δp = 625 Pa、h ≈ 0.51 cm。 A/A₁ = 0.200、v₂ = 5.00 m/s、p₂ = 108.000 kPa、Δp = 12000 Pa、h ≈ 9.72 cm。 At 1.5: v₂ = 1.50 m/s, Δp = 625 Pa, h ≈ 0.51 cm. At 5.0: A/A₁ = 0.200, v₂ = 5.00 m/s, p₂ = 108.000 kPa, Δp = 12000 Pa, h ≈ 9.72 cm. The narrower the throat, the faster the flow and the larger the pressure drop.
What happened to Δp and h when the manometer liquid was changed?→ Δp Δp stayed at 2625 Pa; only h changed: 2.13 cm with mercury, 45.40 cm with CCl₄, and 1.339 m with salt water. h is inversely proportional to (ρₘ − ρ), so a liquid whose density is closer to the water in the pipe (1000 kg/m³) gives a larger h.

Think further

To use this device as a flow meter, how can you find the upstream speed v₁ from the manometer reading h?→ (ρₘ − ρ)gh = Δp = ½ρv₁²{(A₁/A₂)² − 1} なので、v₁ = √[2(ρₘ − ρ)gh / (ρ{(A₁/A₂)² − 1})]。流量は Q = A₁v₁。 Since (ρₘ − ρ)gh = Δp = ½ρv₁²{(A₁/A₂)² − 1}, v₁ = √[2(ρₘ − ρ)gh / (ρ{(A₁/A₂)² − 1})], and the flow rate is Q = A₁v₁. For example, with mercury, h = 2.13 cm and A₁/A₂ = 2.5 give v₁ ≈ 1.0 m/s, matching the simulation setting.
To measure accurately when the flow (and Δp) is small, how should you choose the manometer liquid? What about when the flow is large?→ Δp When Δp is small, a liquid with density close to water (CCl₄ or salt water) gives a larger h that is easier to read. When Δp is large, you need a heavy liquid such as mercury, or h will not fit in the device (at v₁ = 3.0 m/s and A₁/A₂ = 5.0, h was about 87 cm even with mercury).

The model is an inviscid, incompressible ideal fluid: the pipe fluid is water (ρ = 1000 kg/m³), g = 9.8 m/s², the pipe is horizontal, and the upstream static pressure is assumed to be p₁ = 120.0 kPa (gauge). In a real Venturi tube, friction and other losses make the downstream pressure slightly lower than p₁, and flow meters use a correction factor (discharge coefficient). The vertical axis of the top graph does not start at zero, so warn students not to read the standpipe heights as absolute pressures.
