Bernoulli's Principle and Lift

Students use a Venturi tube to confirm that the continuity equation A₁v₁ = A₂v₂ makes the flow faster where the tube is narrow and that Bernoulli's principle P + ½ρv² = constant makes the static pressure lower where the flow is fast, then apply the same idea to a wing: the upper surface has faster flow and lower pressure, producing lift, and the flow behind the wing is turned downward.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Of the liquid columns standing on the inlet, the throat (narrowest part), and the outlet of the Venturi tube, which do you think will be the lowest? How do you think the outlet column will compare with the inlet column?💡 まず、細い所で流れの速さがどうなるかを考え、次に P + ½ρv² が一定であることを使ってみましょう。First think about what happens to the flow speed in the narrow part, then use the fact that P + ½ρv² stays constant.
Do you think air particles that split above and below the wing at the leading edge arrive at the trailing edge at the same time?💡 粒子どうしが「また会わなければならない」理由が、物理の法則の中にあるかどうか考えてみましょう。Ask yourself whether any law of physics requires the particles to meet again.

Try it

In the starting state ("① Inlet speed v₀" = 80 m/s, "② Throat area ratio A₂/A₁" = 0.50), watch Area A: see the particles speed up and the white streamlines crowd together in the throat, and record the height and color of the three columns and the v and ΔP values at each point.
Set "② Throat area ratio A₂/A₁" to 1.00 and then 0.25 and record how v₂ and ΔP₂ in the throat change. Then return it to 0.50, set "① Inlet speed v₀" to 160 m/s, and find by what factor ΔP₂ changes.
In Area B ("③ Angle of attack α" = 6.0°), observe where the "stagnation point" is, the colors above and below the wing, the "Lift" arrow, and the "Wake" direction label.
Follow the "top" and "bottom" markers on the yellow line of particles released together, and read the times shown in "Reach trailing edge" at the bottom. Also read the values with "① Inlet speed v₀" = 160 m/s.
Change "③ Angle of attack α" to 0° → −5° → 15° and record C_L and L′, the direction of the lift arrow, the wake direction, and which particle passes the trailing edge first.

Check

With v₀ = 80 m/s and A₂/A₁ = 0.50, what were the speed and pressure in the throat and at the outlet?→ 喉部は v₂ = 160 m/s(断面積が半分なので速さは2倍)、ΔP₂ = −11.5 kPa で液柱が最も低く青色(「← 最低圧」)。 In the throat v₂ = 160 m/s (half the area, so twice the speed) and ΔP₂ = −11.5 kPa, so its column was the lowest and blue ("← lowest P"). At the outlet v₃ = 80 m/s and ΔP₃ = 0.00 kPa, and the column recovered to the inlet height. This matches ΔP₂ = ½ρ(v₁² − v₂²) = ½×1.2×(80² − 160²) ≈ −11.5 kPa.
How did the pressure drop in the throat change when you changed the area ratio or the inlet speed?→ A₂/A₁ = 1.00 では v₂ = 80 m/s、ΔP₂ = 0 で圧力差はなくなった。 A₂/A₁ = 0.50 で v₀ を 160 m/s にすると ΔP₂ = −46.1 kPa となり、80 m/s のときの4倍になった(圧力差は v² に比例)。At A₂/A₁ = 1.00, v₂ = 80 m/s and ΔP₂ = 0, so the pressure difference disappeared. At 0.25, v₂ = 320 m/s and ΔP₂ = −57.6 kPa, a much larger drop. At A₂/A₁ = 0.50 with v₀ = 160 m/s, ΔP₂ = −46.1 kPa, four times the value at 80 m/s (the pressure difference is proportional to v²).
For the wing at α = 6.0°, what did you see at the stagnation point, on the upper and lower surfaces, and in the wake?→ よどみ点は前縁の少し下面側にあり、その周りは暖色(高圧)。 The stagnation point was slightly on the lower side of the leading edge, with warm (high-pressure) color around it. The upper surface was cool, with fast, low-pressure flow; the lower surface was slightly warm, slower, and higher in pressure. The lift arrow pointed up with C_L = 0.71 and L′ = 2.74 kN/m (at 80 m/s), and the wake was turned −4.7° (down).
Did the top and bottom particles released together reach the trailing edge at the same time? What happened at α = 0° and −5°?→ 同時ではなく、上面の粒子が先に通過した(v₀ = 160 m/s では上 9.8 ms、下 11.5 ms)。 No. The top particle passed first (at v₀ = 160 m/s: top 9.8 ms, bottom 11.5 ms). At α = 0°, C_L = 0.00 (no lift) and they passed at about the same time. At α = −5°, C_L = −0.59, the lift arrow pointed down, the wake turned +2.2° (up), and the bottom particle passed first.

Think further

Why is the explanation "the upper path is longer, so the air on top must go faster to arrive at the same time" wrong?→ 分かれた粒子が後縁で再び出会わなければならないという法則はない。 No law says the separated particles must meet again at the trailing edge. In reality the upper flow is even faster than "equal time" would require, so the top particle passes the trailing edge first (as in the simulation). The lift depends on the circulation Γ around the wing (L′ = ρv₀Γ), and the equal-transit-time idea cannot give the right lift.
How is the explanation of lift by Bernoulli's principle (a pressure difference) related to the explanation that the wake is turned downward?→ 同じ現象を2つの見方で表したもので、矛盾しない。 They are two views of the same phenomenon and do not contradict each other. When the pressure difference pushes the wing up, the wing pushes the air down and gives it downward momentum (action and reaction). In the simulation, upward lift came with a downward wake, and with a negative angle of attack the lift pointed down and the wake turned up.

The model is an ideal, incompressible, steady flow with no friction loss, so the outlet pressure returns to the inlet value (in a real pipe it ends up a little lower). The wing is potential flow around a Joukowski airfoil with the circulation set by the Kutta condition; α is measured from the zero-lift line, so α = 0° gives zero lift. Viscous stall and air compressibility (no longer negligible near 200 m/s) are not modeled, so point out that lift keeps rising even at α = 15°.
