Coupled Pendulums: Normal Modes and Beats

大学・発展 · 物理単元: 連成振動と基準振動Coupled Pendulums: Normal Modes and Beats 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that two pendulums joined by a spring have two normal modes, an in-phase mode ω₋ = √(g/L) that does not depend on k/m and an anti-phase mode ω₊ = √(g/L + 2k/m) that gets faster as k/m grows, and that swinging only one pendulum produces beats as a superposition of the two, with the energy moving to the other pendulum every π/(ω₊−ω₋).

Predict (before you touch anything)

If you tilt both pendulums by the same angle in the same direction and let go (in-phase), how do you think the period compares with a single pendulum without a spring? What about tilting them in opposite directions (anti-phase)?💡 それぞれの場合に、おもりの間隔(ばねの長さ)が変わるかどうかを考えましょう。In each case, think about whether the distance between the bobs (the spring's length) changes.
If you tilt only pendulum 1 and let go while pendulum 2 starts at rest, how do you think the amplitude of each pendulum will change afterward?💡 ばねは振り子1の動きを振り子2に伝えます。 The spring passes pendulum 1's motion to pendulum 2. Pay attention to where the energy goes.

Try it

Keeping "Spring ratio k/m" = 1.00 s⁻² and "Start angle θ₀" = 15°, press the "In-phase mode" button. Read the spring's "stretch" label against the dashed natural length, the measured period of θ₁, and the total energy.
Press the "Anti-phase mode" button, read the spring's stretched/squeezed label and the measured period of θ₁, and compare them with the in-phase mode.
Press the "Push one (beats)" button and watch the E₁, E₂ and total energy bars on the right and the graph below for about 20 s. Compare the "measured" time when the θ₁ amplitude becomes almost 0 with the theoretical π/Δω.
Move the "Spring ratio k/m" slider to 0.10 and to 2.00, and record how the ω₋, ω₊ and theoretical π/Δω readouts change (at k/m = 2.00, also read the measured value for the single push).

Check

In the in-phase mode, what did the spring do? What was the period?→ ばねの表示は常に「伸び 0.0 cm」で、自然長の破線と一致したまま、2つの振り子は θ₁ = θ₂ でそろって振れた。 The spring label stayed at "stretch 0.0 cm", matching the dashed natural length, and the two pendulums swung together with θ₁ = θ₂. The spring energy was 0.0 mJ. The measured period was 2.007 s, the same as a single pendulum, 2π/√(g/L) = 2.007 s (ω₋ = 3.130 rad/s).
How did the period of the anti-phase mode compare with the in-phase mode?→ 短かった。 It was shorter: measured 1.829 s, matching the theoretical 2π/ω₊ = 1.829 s (ω₊ = 3.435 rad/s). The spring stretched and squeezed by up to about 20 cm, and its force adds to the restoring force, so the oscillation is faster.
With the single push (beats), how did the energy move, and how long did it take for the θ₁ amplitude to become almost 0?→ 最初はほぼすべて E₁(約 330 mJ)にあり、しだいに E₂ に移って約10秒後には E₁ が約 20 mJ、E₂ が約 320 mJ になり、その後また E₁ に戻った。 At first almost all the energy was in E₁ (about 330 mJ). It gradually moved to E₂, so after about 10 s E₁ was about 20 mJ and E₂ about 320 mJ, and then it moved back to E₁. The total stayed constant at 370.11 mJ. The measured time for the θ₁ amplitude to reach almost 0 was 10.33 s, very close to the theoretical π/Δω = 10.31 s.
When you changed k/m to 0.10 or 2.00, how did ω₋ and ω₊ change?→ ω₋ は 3.130 rad/s のまま変わらなかった。 ω₋ stayed at 3.130 rad/s. ω₊ was 3.162 rad/s at k/m = 0.10 and 3.715 rad/s at 2.00, so only the anti-phase mode got faster as k/m increased. The theoretical π/Δω was very long, 98.85 s, at k/m = 0.10 and short, 5.38 s (measured 5.42 s), at 2.00.

Think further

Why does it take longer for the energy to move to the other pendulum when the spring is weaker?→ 片押しの運動は振幅の等しい2つの基準振動の重ね合わせで、2つのモードの位相差が (ω₊−ω₋)t で少しずつずれていく。 The single-push motion is a superposition of two normal modes with equal amplitudes, and their phase difference slowly drifts as (ω₊−ω₋)t. When the phase difference reaches π, the two modes cancel at pendulum 1 and add up at pendulum 2. A weaker spring makes the difference Δω between ω₊ and ω₋ smaller, so the time π/Δω needed to drift by π becomes longer.
How is the fact that the in-phase frequency does not depend on k/m connected to what you saw of the spring's stretch?→ 同位相モードでは θ₁ = θ₂ なので、運動方程式の結合項 −(k/m)(θ₁−θ₂) が 0 になり、ばねは伸びも縮みもせず力を出さない(「伸び 0.0 cm」)。 In the in-phase mode θ₁ = θ₂, so the coupling term −(k/m)(θ₁−θ₂) in the equations of motion is 0, and the spring neither stretches nor squeezes and exerts no force ("stretch 0.0 cm"). Each pendulum then behaves like a simple pendulum moved only by gravity, so ω₋ = √(g/L) does not depend on k/m.

The motion comes from the linear small-angle equations solved with RK4 (step ≤ 1 ms), with L = 1.0 m, g = 9.8 m/s², and m = 1 kg used for the energy display. The spring drawing and its "stretch" are computed from the actual bob positions, but the force uses the linear approximation, so large θ₀ will differ from a real system. E₁ and E₂ do not include the spring energy, which is shown separately as "spring".
