大学・発展 · 物理単元: 連成振動と基準振動Coupled Oscillators and Normal Modes (2 masses, 3 springs) 目安 20分about 20 min
Students understand that the motion of two masses and three springs is a superposition of two normal modes, the in-phase mode ω₁ = √(k/m) and the out-of-phase mode ω₂ = √((k+2kc)/m), and that for other starting conditions energy moves back and forth between the masses as beats with period 2π/|ω₂−ω₁|.

Predict (before you touch anything)

Compare releasing both masses displaced by the same amount in the same direction (r = +1) with releasing them displaced by the same amount in opposite directions (r = −1). Which oscillation do you think is faster (shorter period)?💡 それぞれの場合に、真ん中の結合ばね kc が伸び縮みするかどうかを考えましょう。In each case, think about whether the middle coupling spring kc gets stretched or compressed.
If you displace only mass 1 and release it while mass 2 is held still at first (r = 0), how do you think the two masses will move afterward?💡 質点1が動くと結合ばねを通して質点2に力が伝わります。 When mass 1 moves, the coupling spring passes a force to mass 2. Think about where the energy goes.

Try it

In the starting state ("Coupling kc" = 1.5 N/m, "Mass m" = 1.0 kg, k = 10 N/m), press the "r=+1" button. Read the Δ of the middle coupling spring, the "Gap x₂−x₁" value, and the "measured" period in the ω₁ line.
Press the "r=−1" button and, in the same way, read how "Gap x₂−x₁" changes and the "measured" period in the ω₂ line, and compare it with the theoretical T₂.
Press the "r=0" button and watch the x₁(t), x₂(t) graph, the "Energy of each mass E₁, E₂" graph, and the "KE" bars (K₁, K₂) on the right for about 15 s. Compare the spacing of the green dashed lines with the "Beat period" readout.
Move the "Coupling kc" slider to 0, 1.5, and 5.0 N/m, and record how the ω₁, ω₂ and beat period readouts change.
Set the "Mass m" slider to 4.0 kg and check how ω₁ and ω₂ change. Use "Pause" and "Reset" as needed.

Check

With r = +1, what happened to the coupling spring and the gap between the masses? What was the period?→ 結合ばねの Δ は常に 0.0 cm、「距離 x₂−x₁」も 0.00 cm のままで、2つの質点は一体となって動いた。 The coupling spring's Δ stayed at 0.0 cm and "Gap x₂−x₁" stayed at 0.00 cm, so the two masses moved together as one. The measured period was 1.987 s, matching the theoretical T₁ = 2π/√(k/m) = 1.987 s (ω₁ = 3.162 rad/s).
How did the period with r = −1 compare with the period for r = +1?→ 短くなった。 It was shorter: measured 1.743 s, matching the theoretical T₂ = 1.743 s (ω₂ = √((k+2kc)/m) = 3.606 rad/s). The gap x₂−x₁ kept changing between about −20 and +20 cm, and the coupling spring stretched and compressed strongly.
With r = 0, how did the energy move between the two masses?→ 最初は E₁ だけが大きく、約7秒後には E₁ がほぼ 0 になって E₂ が最大になり、約14秒後に再び E₁ に戻った。 At first only E₁ was large. After about 7 s E₁ was almost 0 and E₂ was at its maximum, and after about 14 s the energy was back in E₁. This back-and-forth period matches the displayed "Beat period" 14.175 s = 2π/|ω₂−ω₁|, which is also the spacing of the green dashed lines. The x₁(t), x₂(t) graph shows beats, with the two amplitudes growing large in turn.
How did ω₁, ω₂ and the beat period change when you changed kc and m?→ kc Changing kc left ω₁ = 3.162 rad/s unchanged and changed only ω₂ (at kc = 5.0, ω₂ = 4.472 rad/s and the beat period is 4.797 s). At kc = 0, ω₁ = ω₂ and the beat period is ∞ (no coupling). At m = 4.0 kg (kc = 5.0), ω₁ = 1.581 rad/s and ω₂ = 2.236 rad/s, so both became half as large.

Think further

Why is the angular frequency of the in-phase mode √(k/m) regardless of kc?→ 同位相モードでは x₁ = x₂ なので結合ばねの伸び x₂ − x₁ が常に 0 で、結合ばねは力を出さない。 In the in-phase mode x₁ = x₂, so the coupling spring's extension x₂ − x₁ is always 0 and it exerts no force. Each mass feels only its wall spring k, so the frequency is the same as a single spring oscillator, √(k/m). In the out-of-phase mode x₂ = −x₁, the coupling spring is stretched by 2x₁, so the restoring force grows to −(k+2kc)x₁ and the frequency is higher.
Using the beat period formula 2π/|ω₂−ω₁|, explain why the r = 0 motion is a superposition of the two normal modes.→ x₁(0) = A, x₂(0) = 0 は、同位相モード (A/2, A/2) と逆位相モード (A/2, −A/2) の和である。 x₁(0) = A, x₂(0) = 0 is the sum of the in-phase mode (A/2, A/2) and the out-of-phase mode (A/2, −A/2). Because the two modes have slightly different angular frequencies, their phase difference drifts as (ω₂−ω₁)t: at x₁ they go from adding up to canceling, and at x₂ the opposite happens. The time for the phase difference to drift by 2π is 2π/|ω₂−ω₁|, which is the period of the energy exchange.

The wall springs are fixed at k = 10 N/m, there is no friction, and the motion is computed exactly from normal coordinates. The "Energy of each mass E₁, E₂" does not include the energy stored in the coupling spring, so E₁ + E₂ fluctuates slightly when kc is large. The kc range runs from 0 up to k, so students can try strong coupling as well as the typical weak-coupling case kc ≪ k.
